  1. I was able to fix this issue of my Apple TV not uploading HomeKit Secure Video after it updated itself to 26.1 by logging into icloud.com and accepting the latest iCloud terms and conditions there (which I couldn’t do on my Apple TV since it’s in another country…).

  2. My Apple TV updated itself to 26.1 at some point in the past few days and now all HomeKit Secure Video history from all cameras is missing and the cameras no longer send motion detection notifications.

    Great.

  3. Weiß jemand was das bedeutet (Screenshot von der #homeApp am #iphone)? Ist das schlimm? Was kann passieren?

  5. I actually think this may be the case, if the rumoured “home hub” device actually exists and will be released some time in the next year. It would necessitate a significant improvement to the Home app and/or HomeKit.

  6. I have to assume that the complete lack of changes with the Home app is because they’ve been working on a total rewrite and it just isn’t ready yet, right? And that’s why they’re also retiring the old home architecture, right?

    Right...?

Please, not another year and a half of glitchiness and an unusable camera UI...

  7. All of this still applies. Embarrassing and infuriating in equal measure.

It feels like there’s no one at Apple working on the Home app.

  8. So far HomeKit Secure Video cameras are even less reliable on iOS 18.0/tvOS 18.0!

Mine are now regularly going into “No Response” mode.

Buying cameras that use HomeKit is the biggest tech purchase regret I’ve ever had. Apple should be ashamed by how shabby the experience is, and the Home app’s camera UI didn’t get a single improvement or bug fix in iOS 18 either – it’s just as buggy as ever.

  9. Meanwhile this ridiculous hardware workaround to the reliability problems of HomeKit Secure Video has been working pretty well for the past couple of months.

(it’s ridiculous that this is needed, yet here we are)

  10. Because HomeKit Secure Video recording and automations seem to randomly just stop working after a while and a restart of the Apple TV fixes them, this is what I’ve now resorted to: a 7-day digital timer that turns the Apple TV off for a minute once per week 🙃

I really wish it was possible to remotely restart an Apple TV via the Home app. Being able to remotely tell it to install a software update would be nice too!

  11. In the continuing trash fire that is Apple’s Home app, today it’s getting the days of the week incorrect and thinks it’s Monday the 25th instead of Sunday the 25th, with the rest of the days of the week all offset by one day.

The camera UI in the Home app is *so* buggy in every way: the date and scrubber controls, the display of the video, zooming, etc. It needs to be completely scrapped and rewritten.

  12. And now it’s stopped recording all cameras and no matter what I adjust or turn on or off I can’t get it to start again.

With the Home app and HomeKit, your house could get broken into and you’ll have no record of it because it is so shamefully unreliable. This is a failure of a product from Apple and I would strongly recommend against using it.

  13. Once again today the #HomeApp / #HomeKit has mysteriously stopped recording video and sending notifications for one camera. Yesterday I got someone to go and restart the Apple TV, which fixed it for all of about 12 hours.

The camera is accessible and can be viewed live, it just never gets recorded, as though the motion detection is failing.

The nature of the #Home app means it has to be reliable, yet it’s one of the least reliable things Apple has released.

  14. I challenge the #Home team to try to navigate back several days through a camera’s recordings (if the date picker even appears) and export a specific clip on macOS without it getting stuck or crashing.

(also: totally broken location services where it thinks you’re always at home when you aren’t, or it thinks your Home’s location is in a place where it isn’t and there’s no reliable way to adjust it, thus making all useful Automations impossible)

  15. I’m not the kind of person that says “the team that makes this software should be fired and replaced”, but the atrocious bugginess and unreliability of the #HomeApp and #HomeKit sure is tempting me with the thought.

Broken syncing, invitations that don’t work, devices showing the wrong states, crashing, camera recording/motion detection that stops working, UI bugs and freezing, elements glitching and flying in from out of view for no reason, bad navigation, controls that are unusable… 🤷‍♂️

  16. To answer one of my questions about this:

After testing, yes, an Apple TV can analyse more streams of HomeKit Secure Video than a HomePod can. How many? It’s hard to know, but a HomePod mini doesn’t seem to be able to handle three, while a latest generation Apple TV definitely can.

So if you want motion detection and notifications to work properly and have a few cameras, don’t use a HomePod as your Home Hub.

  17. The Home app doesn’t update the thumbnails of cameras any more unless you tap into each camera? Yet another bug in the Home app or a problem with the Home Hub?

(the quality gap between the Home app and an app such as Safari or Messages is so huge…)

    #HomeKit #HomeApp #iOS17

  18. I just checked the iOS 16 documentation and that statement doesn’t appear in it, so it is new.

It explains a lot about why my cameras have always failed to only record Specific Motion as they’re set to do and instead just constantly record any motion (and would also send notifications for any motion, which I had to turn off because I was getting notifications every few minutes).

It would’ve been nice to know that from the start, and also how many Home Hubs are really needed.

    #HomeKit #HomeApp

  19. I don't recall seeing this note in Apple’s documentation before about the motion analysis of HomeKit Secure Video cameras.

How many cameras can a single Home Hub analyse the video of simultaneously? One? Two?

Can an Apple TV analyse more simultaneously than a HomePod can? Is it documented anywhere?

It seems like a pretty important detail if you want motion notifications to work properly (which mine do not…).

  20. Let me just try to export a clip from this camera in the #HomeApp

... if only the text didn't slide off the Next button and make it non-functional? (also the volume slider control is looking a bit ill)

  21. My usual experience of trying to scrub back through a camera's timeline in the #HomeApp

After three years of daily crash reports you'd think they'd be able to fix this crasher by now… 🗑️🔥

    #macOS #Apple #HomeKit #HKSV

  22. Also, Activity Notifications in the #HomeApp and #HomeKit are completely broken for me.

Regardless of what settings I choose (e.g. “Specific Motion is Detected” > “People Are Detected” only) it constantly notifies me of *any* motion.

Even if I create an Activity Zone to restrict it further, it ignores it and sends notifications for motion outside the zone as well.

How did #Apple ship this? It's so broken. This is on the “new Home architecture” that’s supposed to be “more reliable”! 😵‍💫

  23. Now #HomeKit has mysteriously started recording again, but the #HomeApp is stuck doing this constant scrubbing of the camera’s timeline, making it impossible to select anything.

#Apple needs to completely rewrite the Home app’s camera UI. It’s so buggy – sometimes the video will be hidden behind a thumbnail of the video, the UI glitches all the time, you can’t reliably zoom in and it occasionally crashes. Also the date selector is terrible: good luck navigating to a specific clip/time.

    🗑️🔥

  24. I have questions about what's going on in this scene… 😶

    #HomeApp #HomeKit #Apple

  25. #Apple should be embarrassed by how unreliable #HomeKit and the #HomeApp are.

Today, randomly, it decided to no longer allow me to view recordings from a HomeKit Secure Video camera. It's like it never recorded anything - all recordings from the past week are gone and it doesn't even show the timeline when viewing the camera.

(it has also always ignored my selection of only recording when "Specific Motion is Detected” and records any motion regardless)
