  1. RE: mastodon.social/@sundogplanets

Possibly time for the satellites to be doing some sort of flocking work themselves.

But who would trust other satellites?

#NealStephenson the #SciFi writer introduyced a program. #perambulator for that, in this entertaining novel #SevenEves

  6. @Ruth_Mottram
#SciFi #NealStephenson introduced the idea of a program run on many distributed nodes to optimise orbits and the manoeuvres to avoid collisions, called it Perambulator and for plot purposes gave it a very long span of use.
    #Seveneves
    An entertaining book.

  7. @mastodonmigration

Some work has been done and published on residence time in orbit.
Small fragments low down - even at perigee - fall out quite quickly.

I'm not a mathematician, but it is probably a time between collision problem rather than an amount.

Neal Stephenson's recent #SF novel #SevenEves as well as being well-worth reading does discuss the progression of a slow cascade from a single very large starting point in a larger volume.

  8. "Asteroid könnte 2032 statt der Erde auch den Mond treffen"

Für Menschen die #SevenEves (Neal Stephenson) gelesen haben ist das jetzt nicht die größte Beruhigung.

  9. @urlyman I read this line: "The effects of climate change are threatening our efforts to *deal* with climate change.” and it got me a bit worried. I am thinking of a point in #SevenEves where someone did some math and understood a serious problem:

  10. I am re-reading #seveneves by #NealStephenson . First time trough was audiobook and I stopped in the middle for about 2 years. (Spoiler alert) I thought of Julia as the baddie. I'm older now, and reading from a book. I'm consciously trying to read it with Julia not as the baddie. Books like this, that have multiple perspectives, are awesome! #booktodon

  11. I’ve read this book before, so it’s not a surprise… but I’m still amused to see the words “Five Thousand Years Later”.

  12. @ct_bergstrom Is this a guy that read #Seveneves and actually enjoyed the feverdream final third?

  13. Trying, but failing, to knock myself out by reading Neal Stephenson's #Anathem
While it's got some good ideas (Time Monks! Meme Hygiene!), it's awfully kludgy and slow. Especially compared to #SnowCrash or #Seveneves which are both dense, but move along at pace.

  14. @ReadThinkBeGood absolutely, very big ideas! #SevenEves was amazing, big ideas, but also a very gripping story. Similarly the World of Warcraft one (I forget the title), which was a real thriller.

This one just felt a little overdone in terms of tangential details. Definitely worth a read though. Let me know what you think!

  15. Having a tough #fibromyalgia flare-up this afternoon, so just doing some random knitting and listening to #Seveneves by #NealStephenson on audio.
