  1. [Note: I wrote this in 2014. Recently rediscovered in my Evernote]

One day I put the Serotta
    In the basement
    and turned my attention
    to motorcycles and photography.

In a blink, days became weeks,
    became months
    became seasons
    became years of dust
    settling on the bike
    as I sought other pursuits.

    And then the midlife came
bringing with it a whole slew of
    existential questions
    fifteen extra pounds
and the fear that the end
    was closer than the beginning.

    It was right around then
    when an idea stirred.
A seed planted by a friend.
    And then one fine day
    the Serotta was dusted off
    clinchers filled with air
    water bottles filled
    and old Lycra stretched
    and prodded into position.

    Those first pedal strokes
    were like coming home
    So instinctive so natural.
    An old friend that you
    haven’t seen in years
yet you don’t miss a beat.

The years melted with every mile
and there were no cycle computers
or other riders to remind me
that I was an older, fatter, and slower
    version of myself.

Who cares that I barely touched the big ring
    and reached my modest
    VO2max and heart rate max
    on the slightest inclines,
and that the creak in the bottom bracket
had not, in all those years,
    automagically fixed itself.

    It did not matter.
I was back in my bike zen zone.
Where all that exists is the now
and the next 20 meters of pavement.
    Spinning until the lungs
ran out off puff and then
Pushing a bigger gear until the legs
    threatened to cramp.

    Spin. Push. Repeat.

    And then my Achilles’ tendon,
whom I’ve never spoken with before
    introduced itself and said,
    “Hello, I’m your Achilles’ tendon.
It’s been years since you’ve used me like this.
So please take it easy and we’ll be just fine.”

    It was a reasonable request.
    I eased up and enjoyed
    the pure and simple joy
    of riding a bike.

Later that evening my legs tingled
with that feeling of a day well-pedaled.
    I felt energized, revived, reborn.

I could easily fall in love with cycling
    all over again.

  2. I've been meaning to turn my vintage road bike into a setup for a while. Today I finally did it and I think I like it. The gear ratio is maybe a tad high. But the bike really goes fast when you push it.

Because this bike also serves as a my trainer bike in the winter, I think I'll just leave the front derailleur on, even though it doesn't look good.

  3. Oh wow another #cyclist and I rode through there minutes before this happened! We were headed south on 95th from Isabelle Rd and when we got to Arapahoe there were a ton of emergency vehicles headed that way. We both chatted about how it must have been something major. (If you were the guy riding the #Emonda, I was the guy riding with you on the red #Serotta).

  4. Nice 30+ mile ride on the #Serotta today. I was going to ride the #JakeTheSnake, but plans and route changed.

Tried to keep it fairly flat because of the knee injection yesterday, but still managed over 1k ft of climb 😂. Felt good though.

  5. Another nice ride on the #Serotta today.

I find the #Strava "athlete intelligence" to be pretty lame. I've never really read it much before, but after looking at it in detail, it's just not helpful. Other aspects of Strava are useful, just not that.

  6. Great ride on the #Serotta this morning! The weather was about perfect and I felt good. And the freshly cleaned and lubed drivetrain was smooth.

  7. Nice ride on the #Serotta today again using the #Jepster app, which I really like. I need to clean the drivetrain tonight as it's getting pretty gunked up.

Also getting that N+1 bike itch again 😂

  8. Ooh I've got a possibility on a cool old #Serotta in northern VA! Hoping to have a look at it next week when I'm there for work. This could be a fun bike for the east coast work base!

  9. @tg9541 Thank you, Thomas. This bike is a 2008 #Serotta Coeur d'Acier a road bike hand-built in the US by the legendary Ben Serotta. It's a beautiful thing to ride!
