  1. More practice, used the spare shirt panel to make yet another bag. Not a great fan of using t shirts for bags. They have no structure. Anyway, practice, lol. The serger most certainly is better for jersey material than the straight stitch machine. That said, you want to use a normal machine for precision... this is a one-purpose-only tool. #serger #sewing

  2. Okay, more practice on the shirt. Cut out the front panel, built a collar, and sewed it on. Not perfect, but I get how the collar on t shirts work now! (Stretch.. built smaller than the neck hole). Accidentally sewed it to the wrong side, but this is not a shirt for wearing, just practice. Lots of oopsies, but definitely helpful to understand how to drive the Serger and what to watch out for. (Folded fabric is one, and not accidentally getting other fabric in the path!). #sewing #serger #practice

  3. Serger t-shirt gone horribly, horribly wrong, lol. Deconstructed two thrifted t-shirts and attempted to resize them and sew them into a new shirt with the Serger. I failed to stretch the neck section properly. And my resizing of two backs to a front and back failed miserably. Hilarious! This is not as easy as it looks. #sewing #serger

  4. 5 sides to the bag, and also the top edge. Also made two handles. I ended up trying one inside out, the other one straight... think the straight serger handle is better. #serger #sewing

  5. Okay. Not perfect but just trying to get an idea of how these work. Also had to fix the screws holding those needles in. Best to do that on tiny expendable projects. #sewing #serger

  6. Tragedy strikes again!! The other needle popped out. Another 26 minutes of needle wrestling not documented! The screws holding the two needles in very, very, very stuck. Required force to move the gummed up screw. Left one was already loose... I don't think this machine was used much. Another edge with issues. #sewing #serger

  7. Needle reattached and edge continued. It was ugly. So ran it through again. #sewing #serger

  8. TRAGEDY (almost). Thought I broke a needle, but it just dislodged. Putting it back was a PITA (not the bread) #serger #sewing

  9. Edges of the top first. Just to figure out how this thing works. #hamradio #seeing #serger

  10. Okay, my videos of#2 and #3 failed. I got close on #3, but the thread on the blue and green routes eventually snagged... the two sides are currently routed in the same path and one snags on the other and breaks. Time to go watch some videos. #serger #sewing

  11. Top two needles not threaded, attempt#1 to thread them (failure... missed at least one guide and not sure where the tails are supposed to go) #sewing #serger

  12. Let's see.. Randy Your Sewing Machine Man seems to have a high opinion of this model, got lucky

  13. I used my serger yesterday! I sewed a pencil skirt and a matching pullover to go with it. I accidentally made a crop top when I trimmed the fabric at the wrong spot. I think it’s an improvement but I don’t like the way the hem flares out so I’m going to try to invent a new style. If it works out, I’ll post it. No sewing today. Yesterday’s sewing wrecked my back and I need to recover.

  14. I got a serger for Christmas this year but have been afraid to use it so it’s been sitting in its box in the living room. Today, I took it out and learned how to thread it. Maybe this evening I’ll practice on some fabric scraps! Who knows! #sewing #serger

  15. Today's sewing time was 90% threading and re-threading my serger while thinking "This isn't that complicated".

If you need to eat for concentration, do it before you (hypothetically) slap some clothes together.

  16. I added an overlocker/serger to the sewing machine collection. It's a Brother 925D. 4 threads, differential feed, made in Taiwan, solid metal frame. Just a little lint, no signs of ever being serviced or regularly oiled, barely used I'd guess. I took off most of the plastic covers, blew out the lint, oiled everything that moves, and serged something. Now I can make crooked stitches and the edge to match too!

  17. Spent a few hours diagnosing and cleaning a #serger bought in 1987, symtom a seemingly slipping drive belt. After a thorough looksee my best guess is that a toothed belt on conical spools is probably a bad fit and a round belt would be better? I'm no mechanical engineer though, so perhaps that's normal? Slips like hell though so I'd say a past service gone wrong.

  18. You can buy self threading sergers/overlockers now !

    WTF !?

    WHAT ELDRICH MAGIKS IS THIS?

HOW LONG HAVE THESE MIRACULOUS FEATS OF ENGINEERING EXISTED ?

    ::sobs::

I already own an overlocker, and unless it dies I shall never buy another one but I COVET the self 'air' threading feature. oh My.

  19. Finally learned to use the rolled edge setting on my serger to make this set of picnic napkins. #serger #sewing #picnic

Super nice!! I've cut out knit project #3 and I'm hoping to get greater confidence with making them. Giant fabric sale on Saturday of grandmothers' fabric stashes so I'm hoping to get more inexpensive knit fabrics that I can practice on. Cutting problems yesterday & I can't recall for sure if I recut that piece or not. Oh well, just keep making and the skills will gradually evolve. I finally have the use of the #serger at the library Makerspace so I'll try that out eventually.

Finally!! The day that I've awaited for well over 2 years has arrived. I was able to use the #makerspace #serger, Serge Tankian! Hooray for #SystemOfADown and for the #EdmontonPublicLibrary for making this day a reality. Sadly, I was absolutely absorbed in trying to sew these fully enclosed seams on my #GypsumSkirt so I didn't even play around with the serger today. However, I have multiple knit projects in the queue right now with fabric and patterns, so I'll get onto it before long.

  22. @sinituulia
I've been impatiently waiting for my library #Makerspace to bring out the #serger they've had in storage for the last 2 years. Apparently, it may make an appearance in 2 weeks! I'd really just like to be able to do seam-finishing, although I'm getting to be quite competent at French seams!
