Getting annoyed by some of the cruft that #RocketChat has accumulated over the years and their constant nagging to move to a paid subscription. Any #nerds have alternatives you like? I've heard #Matrix is annoying for other reasons. Seems like every #selfhosted #chat application just wants you to pay for a subscription now.

I hear you. Personally I also have things separated that way. Some used to host DBs, fast performing services, others for "slow" storage and large capacity content.
Personally I would go with a NAS unit because of what you said, but an Ubuntu server also works with its upside.

On #selhost #selfhosting - I've been running my own server since mid-November. Once I got it setup and tuned, the maintenance has been marginal / minor at best.
The story is pinned to my profile, and here. Of course, I've got Linux expertise and am comfortable there, so it's only for those who might know what they are doing. But doing it, once done, is simple.
