We went to see the bonfire at a Danish midsummer celebration (Sankt Hans), the first one I've attended with my children.
As we were leaving, I was delighted to note the cargo bikes parked around the area. It must have been ~100 bikes, this is just a small selection.

June 23rd. Sankt Hans Aften. The night Denmark gathers around bonfires. Preferably on the beach, if there’s one nearby. In Denmark, there usually is. Someone makes a speech. Someone hands out the words to the Midsummer song ‘We Love Our Country’ even though it’s 138 years old so we should know it by now. Everyone sings it. Someone lights the bonfire. Everyone parties like a pagan.
Tonight, it'll look like this because bonfires have been banned because of the drought.

Sædvanligvis laver jeg ikke kobling mellem sankthansheksedukker og middelalderens grumme hekseforfølgelser, men jeg kan godt se at symbolikken slet ikke er tidssvarende. Tænk hvis man i en anden sammenhæng havde en offentlig begivenhed hvor man i hyggens navn piskede en negerdukke. Så ville verden da først gå i brand.
Så 👍 herfra til de kvinder der havde tænkt kreativt i går og lavet coronabolde i stedet for en heks.

This year the sacrificial innocent alien is a small six-legged deer like creature with excellent depth perception and a flowery disposition. It's barely the size of a puppy. Poor thing.
