Klein would reverently stay out of Medb's way and coup-de-grâce anyone that managed to not die on contact from the wrath of his goddess. (Medb is working on talking him down from the whole worshiping her as a deity. it just makes her a tab anxious to be venerated by someone who's brother she killed during a hunger frenzy) That is to say he would absolutely have her covered if she somehow were not in a position to rectify the situation.

Why he see this? Well, to crudely simplify things, blood born lycanthropy mixes with spiritual essence lycanthropy

Kind of like popping 5 caffeine pills a min after eating an edible, and a ghost turns up

#PennedPossibilities 973 — How do you select the names of your characters? For you, is there a method?

Names have meanings.

Sometimes the name is an anagram for a detail about the characters.

Sometimes they're thinly veiled nods to some work I enjoyed, such as Van Ander who runs the bar *The First Sip"

Sometimes the name is derived from the real world that has meaning related to the character.
"Klein" is German for small or little. Klein is named such because he starts with a small or limited experience.
His brother "Laric" is a derivative of "Alric/Alrich" meaning ruler or leader. Where Laric went, his younger brother Klein would follow.

Sometimes a name follows in-universe rules such as with Wyth Fork where the names from the main continent use diphthongs and double consonants in specific patterns.

Klein's auto-ratchet made a soft brrtrtrtruum! for each bolt he loosened as he purposely worked slowly going all the way around the lid.

He tried once or twice to whistle a tune to distract himself but to no avail. His mind kept interrupting to rehash the conversation with his older brother. His mind kept trying to work out to what extent Laric was upset. His mind kept pondering how long it would take for Laric to come around.

His mind was making a lot of unhelpful, unproductive noise.

Klein grabbed the edges of the lid with both hands and slowly thumped his head against the container a good four or five times before drawing a breath and letting loose a heavy exasperated sigh.

I tend to be careful with continuity, both characters and events. #SanguineDreams sprouts off of an existing story so it's important to me to not break cannon events, and to not write established characters in a way that contradicts established behaviours.

I bet John sighs in relief a bit when I move into sections that are 100% my creation so he gets a break from the texts at random times of 'Hey I need info o
about <thing that wasn't intended to be high depth/importance outside the story>. Oh and I fleshed out (aka built insanely dense lore) details of <thing that was self contained to the story>'

Actually I retract the joke. John gets gassed up when I seize upon subtle bits and implications of his writing, and then shake them around like a dog with new favourite chew toy. Him & the other writers on the series are super supportive of the arcane and 'woo-woo' direction I'm navigating the ship.

Large difference, Klein is from a farming colony within the Dream. He was just another generic person that chose to become a Jinrō (a low end type of werewolf for simplicity) of Clan Tsagaansoyoo (a crime syndicate & werewolf clan) He's rather savy about things within the Dream since he's native to it and the various technologies. Vs Medb who comes from a universe/planet where humans barely had matchlock rifles .

Klein also can read/write several of the common languages in the Dream. Medb is functionally illiterate within the Dream since none of the languages she speaks exist in the Dream. She speaks Tradesman Tongue which is close enough to common english for her to get by, but it uses a different alphabet of 37-42 characters

"Eyes as orange as harvest moons seemed to glow against a bulk of black shaggy fur"

Whenever I am stressing that it's dangerous to be within Medb's immediate reach/sprinting range, you see a description pointing out her orange eyes. She's watching with interest. Descriptions of them as shining go pretty much hand in hand with unleashed violence.

Orange sits between Red (typically associated with wrath/anger) and Yellow (usally meaning caution/warning)

If she's in wolf form, I purposely contrast them against her black fur for a subtle 'something in the abyss is starring back'

Her ear twitched slightly as Medb mentioned ‘pack.’ “So you are a werewolf?” Cpt. Nadie probed, a little frustrated and still unsure about the stranger. Other werewolves she'd previously encountered weren't like this person. They were always wolfish because of Luna's constant presence, and this woman clearly didn't smell like a Jinrō.

“My Líth was a spirit walker. I expected to find your ship decorated with sacred symbols, painted with woad. I'm not sure why I expected thet with how odd this place is.” Medb did a little salute gesture with the shot glass and set it on the bar, then turned to properly face the doe. “Werewolf is the human word for my people. The Sídhe and elevens called us faoladh. But we are Rhai’r-tir, the people of the land.” Medb’s orange eyes examined Cpt. Nadie, taking in the lingering traces of the disguise that she had used to infiltrate the Hippodrome. “I am a werewolf, unlike thet daughter of a bastard Trinity. She is a human clad in fur.”

Flashbacks, dream sequences, digestible dialogue, metered out within internal monologues within the action of the scene.

There's a bunch of ways.

Dream sequences are a favourite as there's lots of malleability with the real+surreal amalgamation that occurs when we experience temporary tango with Thanatos.

Current WIP section I'm working on, Klein is blacked out dreaming. He's reliving someone else's memories. it's lore for Medb and her tactical planning ability, all wrapped in action and tension.

Yes Medb can swim as a wolf, but more effectively in human + hybrid forms. She uses butterfly strokes. She's not fast but she is a strong, high endurance swimmer.

She had to figure it out on the spot when a Jötunn chucked her off the rampart and into the ocean during the final siege of the Hoarfrost War. This is also why she uses butterfly strokes, she never learned/figured anything else.

Medb is a highly intelligent juggernaut with alien motives and wants, dropped in a foreign universe as everything she cared about and protected was erased from existence

Klein was just a grunt in a clan /& criminal organization, who only recently started to undergo the Jinrō transformation from receiving the Clan Alpha's blood gift. Medb intersecting his life is the epitome of "that which does not kill us, leaves you irrevocably changed." (and usually traumatized)

People periodically note that she smells like a pack of wolves and murder of ravens.

A little bit of a spoiler for planed topics for the sequel The Shapeshift-Heir: She made an agreement with the Morrigan to get knowledge about the death of her daughters, and the guarantee that only Medb could permanently kill their murderers.

A consequence of this agreement is she carries echos of Rhai'r-tir that died and traces of the Morrigan's portent of death. Medb was called upon by the Morrigan to kill individuals that had cheated their due death.

+ setting up precedent for/a demonstration of something Giftzahn observes to Trinity in a later chapter (I'm not writing sequentially so it always makes me giddy when I find the roots that grow the flower in a lter chapter)
+ builds on the bones of a sub story involving Klein
+ sets up precedent for how some things in the sequel will look/work.

- I have to be careful with Klein's dream sequence + results there of.
- threading the needle with why Medb is/will be an existential threat to the werewolf clans, if more than just Trinity & Giftzah know about her. And do it without slamming it in the reader's face
or conversely making it imperceptible

Klein would. He'd hesitate because that urge, that more pure sense of selflessness, is a recent development. But he would.

The point where his life intersects Medb's is a time of flux.

There's a scene where the reader and Laric (Klein's brother) find out he's been drifting away from the status quo of clan Tsagaansoyoo. He's developed a sort of wanderlust, and an understanding that the hunger to find what /elsewhere/ he feels the call of, will make staying still unbearable.

This peeling away from the clan makes him deeply realize that there's more than the will of Supreme Alpha Trinity Tsagaansoyoo and the orders handed down by Giftzahn.

#PennedPossibilities 929 What is your MC's country or place of origin, and where do they currently live?

Medb is from the territory nestled between the Deintyþ Mountains, Cryyl mountains, and a long span of very tall hills called Badbra's Maze. The territory is sometimes called "Eria's Cradle" as the moist ocean air rolls over Badbra's Maze dumps most of the snow in the massive valley before mellow out as it hits the mountains, giving it a longer intense winter. Eria's story (the origin story of the Rhai'r-tír) takes place during winter and involves the Deintyþ Mountains, and there you go.

Currently she is a nomad within the universe known as The Dream

Pride in Rhai'r-tír culture is a bit odd in relation to how our culture tends to think/view it, I'll do my best though.

In Rhai'r-tír culture to be proud is to be humble.

Medb is the Trine for her territory. It's a position of responsibility and honour given by the collective community of the territory because the individual has earned the trust and confidence of reliability by deeds. It is the collective consensus that she is the one who will lead them in emergencies / crisis, and occasionally settle disputes. Her skills are recognized as being of equal value though different from the Primary & Second ( who cycle between being on the Council of Eria and being the day-to-day leader of the territory )

Medb's pride looks like a humble confidence in the collective judgement of her people that she can lead them when needed.

I haven't written the particulars of Klein's epiphany (working on the set up to it currently)

But Klein experiences a moment that causes a subconscious intuition that's drifting in the dark, to fall on the ground under the street lamp light of profound understanding.

He believes Medb is a "fallen god." Not as in 'was good but turned evil', rather she's a god that's been 'removed from her proper ecosystem'

Time is on the fuzzy side in the setting of The Dream. My wip Sanguine Dreams intermeshes with the existing story Hippodrome, which has a vague timeline of when events take place.
Sanguine Dreams starts with that vague timeline sequence, and peels into a bit more defined timeline (characters making specific remarks on passages of time) as it departs from the fallout of Hippodrome's events.

Currently I need to figure out how long it takes a Jinrō to change from human to a wolf-person. Or at least how long it takes Klein to complete the transition. I'll bet a bacon grilled cheese that @GrayWolf57 never thought some weirdo dweeb would be getting into the particulars of what were supposed to just be common mooks 😆

People.

Maybe they're human, maybe they're an animal, maybe they're something else.

But I like to write about people.

With all their emotions, complexities, and lives that exist beyond the pages inked. I like to write about someone you might or might not relate to but you never the less feel as if they're a person that could exist here or in another universe.

I actually thought a lot about this as I was writing the second chapter.

Without Martin of the Maledictions trying to ascend to godhood, Medb would have carried on being a steward of her people until the human city-states made themselves a problem again. The Rhai'r-tír, Elves, Sidhe Courts, and even the Jötun signed "The Pact of Dissolution" after the last war the humans started with the Fae. Basically if the humans started another large scale war, whether or not it was with one of the four signatories, all the human city-states would be destroyed and an order of wardens set up to monitor that the humans don't organize into anything larger than a village.

The city on fire outside bathed the room in red, then orange and yellow as the wind shifted the smoke and flames. The lieutenant struggled to hold his body in the least painful posture as a foot crushed his right calf driving his shin into the floor.

Gíana tightened her grip of his hair and carefully enunciated every word so there would be no misunderstanding. “You have stolen from her that which is irreplaceable. Her daughters.. were unto me as my own children.”

“I was following his orders.” He pleaded blindly, unsure of even who he had killed.

“We know…” Gíana coldly replied.

The lieutenant watched as a naked woman with shaggy black hair, who could be no more than about five foot seven, switched from choking his commanding officer, to grabbing him by the collar. Medb said something in the Rhai'r-tir tongue, and grabbed a support beam for stability before using the officer as a cestus to punch the wall. The building shook with a THUD! THUD! THUD! THUD! Each wetter sounding than the last, until she dropped the headless corpse.

“Your reward for obedience will be to follow him once more.”

#PennedPossibilities 824 — What superstitions pertaining to the dead exist in-universe for your WIP?

One by one each took a drink served by Medb who would say “Go with strength to carry on,” to which they replied “With every breath, they are remembered," before shifting back into a wolf and leaving to trek home.

Medb's people drink the ashes of their dead so the spirits of the dead know they are still a part of the pack, cherished and loved. It is believed that if someone dies and some of their ashes aren't consumed, that the spirit has a harder time moving on because they don't have a living person carrying them inside too guide them along the way.

It's a background thing, likely a topic that will show up in #ShapeshiftHeir , but Medb carries an anxiety around from the loss of her universe. There's a part of her frozen from the #trauma of literally all of her people except her being wiped out. She doesn't have any means of mourning because there are no bodies to cremate and make the /broth/ to drink so all the spirits (if they still exist somewhere) will know they are remembered. She's lost everything, and can't even #grieve properly

Not yet, not a proper telling of a story anyway.
