My current WiP #SanguineDreams , is about someone from a sword & sorcery type universe landing in a universe that's mixed levels of sci-fi with a pinch of fantasy.
I tend to describe the MC as an antagonist to the running antagonist of the series. Or alternatively as " a fish out of water but she is a mix of mudskipper and piranha"

Well here's the canon description of what people smell when they get close to Medb.

"He paused mid thought as his nose brought to attention the scent of ravens or crows, and several wolves in the room. There was clearly only himself and her in the room."

There's clues that aren't hidden, but I don't know if I'll outright explain this phenomenon.

If we're talking about a designer candle or perfume, it'd be a blend of hewed pine or birch, and earthy—planty smell like stawberry plants (not the fruit)

#PennedPossibilities 1087 — Write or share something from your WIP pertaining to: “struggle.”

Before now, the knowledge that the clan, him, and his brother had pledged themselves to had cultivated new strains of the parasite for other purposes was abstract. Something known but not real, not tangible. Now the knowledge was material, the proof sleeping behind him on the other side of several inches of steel and wires.

A dolorous decay set into memories of enjoying watching the fights at the Hippodrome. Those fighters were probably controlled by parasites. His stomach turned, his skin felt uncomfortable, and something itched in the back of his mind.

He kneeled down and carefully slid the bowl by hand pushing it a good foot past the door. He screwed the patch-plate back into place, pinching the rope so the bowl couldn't get dragged further in.

Then he sat there. Leaning against the wall. Just listening. Listening for the ship to make weird sounds or serenade him with angelic hymns.

Nothing was there, only the indecipherable itching in the back of his brain, and queasiness in his stomach.

Medb made an agreement with the Morrigan. She gained the knowledge of when and where she could find the Kerbesh soldier that killed her daughters and his commanding officer. In exchange she would hunt several mages that tried to cheat the Morrigan's judgement with magic that kept their spirits bound to a body.

Lyshí second in line to the Silver-Ash throne, early in her career as a liaison to the Sídhe Courts, would invite Medb along as an advisor (read bullshit detector). At some point it became a thing to say "We have a Wolf at Court, shall I consult her?" if someone wanted to call someone else's bluff.

Which gave rise to "Wolf at Court."

Funny you say that. One of my side projects for #RidersOfTheDream series is logos for each of the #werewolf clans, and one for Medb / the Rhai'r-tír people.

Grab a drink...

It started as a possible book cover idea featuring the logos/clan symbols for the major parties involved in the story. And secondary as a visual shorthand of their personalities.
— Medb is a decently detailed manuscript/coat of arms style wolf head with orange eyes. It's looking to the left which visually is typical for denoting looking into the past, while the style and detailing impart a sense that she's from an older time & complex for it .
— Trinity / Clan Tsagaansoyoo is a large crescent moon with a stylistic simple wolf head that looks aggressive and is pointing to the right. The implications being Trinity is always looking at the next acquisition of power, the next chess move. She's one of the most powerful full blood #Werewolves in The Dream hence the large crescent, and as complex as her schemes tend to be, the end meta goal is relatively simple.
— Riker Tiberius/ Clan Tiberius: Riker is conceited, arrogant, and short sighted; so the logo always looks right at the viewer. He is also very angry with being disowned and exiled from Clan Kérberos, the many sharp points and vexed visage . Stripped of his last name he named his clan after what used to be his middle name, thus the prominent T which also hints that being stripped of the Kérberos name is always on his mind.
— I haven't gotten to the Clan Kérberos logo, but tentative design is a wolf head looking left, another looking right, and an owl head in the center. Representing the Clan's diarchy of Antigone & Demitrius (other clans are ruled by a single person), and their daughter Sophitia who handles their armed forces and the intelligence unit The Striges (she lovingly refers to the members as her 'owls'). The logo if I do it right will visually be a mid point between Medb's logo and the simpler styling of the others, a subtle nod that Kérberos purposely keeps it's self neutral among the clans.

Then she accidentally bit him, and now his story is entwining with her's; present, future, ...and her past.

And there's Morgan. She is an MC in progress. I know that her story is the start of Medb cycling back to Trinity and Giftzahn to be thorn in their side. But, Morgan and Medb haven't filled in much details yet about what goes on between them other than Medb avenges Morgan's family for her.

Tears of heart thudding contentment and happiness trickled from the corner of her eyes as she alternated gently brushing Aeslla & Rowyn’s hair with her hand. “Sleep deep my stone and pebbles, much is ahead of us in weeks so soon.”

Medb kissed her daughters on the forehead, then kissed her fingers and reached over to touch them to Líth’s forehead so as to not disturb anyone’s slumber. She carefully inched to the edge of the bed and tucked the slack of the covers under Rowyn. With slow meticulous movements she put hand then foot to the floor and slid herself from under the remaining edge of the covers. A giggle choked in her throat as the maneuver momentarily reminded her of the crabs shuffling sideways along the shore in summer.

I extended a claw and traced my face in the mirror.
So very much more animal than human, a monster.

There was a certain dangerous beauty and fearful symmetry to what.. to who I saw looking back.

#SanguineDreams has a homage to The Shining (movie) that's played pretty straight in the scene but is hilarious to my sense of humour.
Klein sits at the bar, the bartender asks "What'll it be?", Klein replies "Hair of the dog that bit me."
It's funny because he's sitting a barstool away from Medb who bit him earlier in the book and is responsible for his transformation.

Klein's auto-ratchet made a tooth buzzing brrtrtrtruum! for each bolt he loosened as he purposely worked slowly going all the way around the lid.

He tried once or twice to whistle a tune to distract himself but to no avail. His mind kept interrupting to rehash the conversation with his older brother. His mind kept trying to work out to what extent Laric was upset. His mind kept pondering how long it would take for Laric to come around.

His mind kept making a lot of unhelpful noise.

Klein grabbed the edges of the lid with both hands and slowly thumped his head against the container a good four or five times before drawing a breath and letting loose a heavy exasperated sigh.

Currently I'm letting a scene ferment to the right ABV%

Medb just got free from her escorts during a deadly violent altercation, doubled back to the tram they arrived on to mudy scent trails, and is wandering the streets in exquisitely unfamiliar territory. The buildings loom, their shadows may hide unknown shades , and I need to find her words to articulate how she perceives the alienness of it all in contrast to the stone and brick humans used where she came from.

"I had no doubt it was unmerited, but, procedure is procedure for first meetings. With the formality out of the way, allow me to get to the point. A few weeks ago you killed a werewolf with light colored fur like this..” Sophitia tilted her head slightly to one side and gestured to the sand coloured fur running from her chin tapering down past the collar of the white dress shirt she wore, “and a patch of black on his forehead like a W.”

Medb looked at Sophitia with some confusion, “¿The patch looked like a what?”

The unexpected question threw Sophitia off the script she had rehearsed in her head, leaving her to sputter, “Huh?”

Morgan tapped Medb on the arm and flipped to a page in the notebook she pulled from her satchel. “It's the letter you giggled while practicing because you said it looks like the stone-people symbol for a-place-to-relieve-your-bowels.”

Sophitia started stuttering, absolutely stunned, "Y-y-you can't read?"

Morgan found it amusing that the imposing werewolf lady seemed to be absolutely befuddled. "She's not from our universe. The common language there used forty to forty-three characters. None match our twenty-six."

That Klein was a jinrō barely in the early stage when fur starts to appear. The Klein standing over him was a bit taller, a hybrid of wolf and man, a form blended for brutality. Klein lifted Giftzahn up by grabbing a fist full of the fur on his chest, the exact same way he had seen Medb do to Nata Ono on the security video. Giftzahn thought to himself, “Now there are two monsters roaming the Dream.”

“Sir. You did fairly warn my brother and I that she was very dangerous. For that I owe you the courtesy of being polite. But I may not be inclined to be gentle if you don't answer my questions about the symbiote used to try and shackle hætí Medb.”

#PennedPossibilities 1040 — Are there any factions or groups within your world? Are they good, bad, or somewhere in between?

In setting of The Dream, there's a bunch of factions and groups.

- 12 major #werewolf clans, and some minor clans ( my story #SanguineDreams deals primarily with Clan Tsagaansoyoo [major], Clan Tiberius [minor], Clan Kérberos [major])

- There's the Aetherials with their semi-eldritch who-knows-what-their-endgame-is agenda running in the background

- The A.D.M.M. that is a sort of shipping governance body & merchant marines

- The Thresh; invading bugs with ships & weapons that fuckup your day if you run into them

- a handful of others

Last night it occurred to me that yeah I write slow, took about a year to hit 20k-ish

But I am happy with pretty much everything I lay down ever since that early rewrite to fix some off-characterization of a borrowed antagonist.

Some minor tweaking as I write to refine the Checkov ducks to the row they make in later chapter chunks I've started.

But no 'I don't know what to do here', or second-guessing.

Klein's mind jumped to Medb standing between him and the dead jinrō, her growling defensively and hungry over the kill. “Is that what happened with Ōkami?”

“Her name is Medb. Mind it well. A champion can not be called upon without their name being spoken..” The spectral wolf led Klein over to the bodies in the street. “Life feeds on life young one, and a starved wolf can not ignore it needs to eat.”

The Tiberian jinrō that had shot her was completely eviscerated, heart, liver, chunks of lung and leg. The other Tiberian had bites torn from him but not as thoroughly and severely. It made sense that she would have started with the last and immediate threat to her.

Then, there was Laric.

Klein’s heart wrenched in his chest at the site of his brother laying there dead, having bled out from where Medb’s bite had punctured his femoral artery. He wanted to scream, he wanted to howl, but he could make no sounds. There was only the crushing anguish in his chest, and the tears burning the corners of his eyes. He looked at the pulpy remains of the control symbiote she had vomited up once it died. He wanted to be angry at her, but she wasn't the one that effectively tried to shackle a lesser deity.

This is not to say every name has deep-deep meaning. But every name has a kernal of meaning. Even if it is an obscure passing reference to say The Blues Brothers, or the thinly disguised ones such as a combat trainer who's name is a world play on a term for a jailer/prison warden.

How arbitrary would you guess the names to be?

This is not to say every name has deep-deep meaning. But every name has a kernal of meaning. Even if it is an obscure passing reference to say The Blues Brothers, in to the thinly disguised such as a combat trainer who's name is a world play on a term for a jailer/prison warden.

The Rhai'r-tír are guardians and brutal avengers of nature. It's one of the sacred charges passed down since Eria was blessed by Lluade. They grind imbalances to a halt so the Elven and Dwarven can mend nature.

Medb is no different from any of the other Rhai'r-tír. If you try to clear cut a forest, she'll use your body to fertilize trees that get replanted. Take more deer than is sustainable? You'll find a pissed off wolf or three hiding cozy among the herds waiting for you.

Life feeds on life, but know your limits or nature sends reminders.

That's a tragic question for Medb.

With the destruction of her universe there's none of her people left to remember her. There's nobody to perform the rites and add her name to the Litany of the Long Winter should she die in battle. Her daughters Aeslla and Rowyn died before they were of age to go before The Council of Eria, face their trials, and add Medb's name to their Line of Remembrance.

For her, there's no how-would-she-like-to-be-remembered, because there's no one that can remember her. And it is a heavy heavy weight upon her because it goes hand-in-hand with there being nobody to help her perform the rites to add all the names of her people to the Litany of the Long Winter.

Uh, bluntly, I don't have that aim in the first chapter.

The first chapter is a purposeful glimpse of Medb's m.o. and the Rhai'r-tír ethogram wrapped in the veneer of a quick action sequence.

Meet conflict with strategy
Use violence as needed
If someone tries to kill you, you kill them right back.

Honestly I don't try to make Medb likable. I just kind of let her live on the paper as a person unto her self. The same goes for Klein, or any of the others. I hope people find them as interesting as I do.

Don't hand her a rabbit or guinea pig unless it's an offering of fresh lunch. Birds smaller than a chicken are actually safe from being eaten as they're too much work to prepare and she doesn't like how feathers taste if eaten raw.

Klein would reverently stay out of Medb's way and coup-de-grâce anyone that managed to not die on contact from the wrath of his goddess. (Medb is working on talking him down from the whole worshiping her as a deity. it just makes her a tab anxious to be venerated by someone who's brother she killed during a hunger frenzy)

I forgot how toilsome writing log-book style journal entries can be.

Dry semi-detached but observational.

My anchor is more in the emotional &/or introspecting thoughts.

This chapter/logbook is a firsthand account but second hand action. It should, /should/, be noticeable to the reader as an echo of the prior chapters events as it's accounting what was going on "in reality" while Medb's consciousness is gaoled by the symbiote.

I think I am obsessing because unlike my favourite trick of swinging the reader into momentary confusion with an unnoted slide into a dream sequence, I'm doing the opposite and adding clarity rather than subtracting it.

NTS, when finished, ask N + J to read the chaper and be brutal.
