As far as I know Spiner has been wanting to kill off his character for a long time now.
It's a shame they decided to retcon what was previously established in Beta and semi-Alpha canon such as the film comic(s), books and #StarTrekOnline, where it was *Data's* consciousness that was restored in the golem meant for Soong; not Picard's.

They did a fairly good job at making us think #Picard died, but they had been signaling the 'golem' a bit too strongly that it also was quite obvious they'd be using that to give 'JL' a new lease on life.
Also, what is stopping them from making more of them for others; #Soong in particular?

As for terminating #Data's consciousness... I bet that was mostly #BrentSpiner's idea.

First of all, I loved seeing #WillRiker in the captain's chair!
But what on earth was going on with #Data's face? Could they make him look any less than in #TheNextGeneration and the films? The eyes were too obvious contacts, and that rigid hairline made him look too synthetic... I get that #BrentSpiner is quite a bit older, but still...
