I'm re-watching Terra Firma. I really have no idea how the mirror universe could have enough population left to staff even a single starship, given their murder rate. I mean, they're way above what we've seen of Klingon commanders in murdering their own people for minor transgressions. I don't generally like mirror universe episodes because people are so nasty, but the Discovery ones at least have a lot more nuance and thought to the episodes. I love the idea in this one of someone who has spent substantial time in the nicer universe going back, and instead of slotting right in with who she used to be, trying to change their society. But without being too obvious. Edit: on the positive side for the Discovery mirror universe, their interior decorating is beautiful! I really like the parts about how mirror-prime-mirror Georgiou deals with Saru as a Kelpian. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

I'm re-watching Discovery, just finished season 2 and the first few episodes after the jump to the future in season 3. I really think those episodes right around their jump 930 years into the future are some of the best Trek ever made, for a specific reason. More than any other part of Trek I can think of, neither the characters nor the audience have any clue what comes next, what they're going to find, or how they're going to deal with it. And it's a fair bet they will be underprepared no matter what it is that they find, since their knowledge and technology will be massively out of date. Even for Janeway on the far side of the galaxy, she and we knew the Federation and a familiar world were out there, just very far away, and Neelix had ideas of what they would run into. For Archer, he and his crew may have had no clue what they would find, and have been woefully underprepared for how many people were going to shoot at them, but the audience knew a lot of what he would find. And his ship could go for visits back home on Earth sometimes. This part of Discovery is the only part of Star Trek I can think of where our heroes on the Federation ship are nearly this uninformed, and so are we. It comes through well in the behavior of both Michael and the crew, who seem to be mostly in shock. I like Saru's comment about how being Kelpian makes him more able to deal with fear and uncertainty. I really think s3e1, with Michael crash landing and then having an unbelievable very bad no good day, is brilliant. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

I just finished re-watching s2e14, the end of season 2 of Discovery. The first time I watched it, I thought there was an awful lot going on in one episode, and I had a hard time following all the plots at once as they ran down the hallway with time suit pieces. Now, I still think there's a whole lot going on, but I really love this episode and end of a season. Among various other wonderful bits, I love snarky Commander Nhan and how well she gets along with formerly-Empress Georgiou. I don't think we knew enough about Nhan before this episode to predict that. Losing Admiral Cornwell hit me hard for a fairly minor character. I really liked her: the fact that a psychologist gets promoted to admiral, and how she functions as a woman in command. And that she's older and not aiming for conventionally pretty. I really appreciated the emotional scenes between Culber & Stamets, and between Spock and Michael. They even had a decent reason why Spock and Michael should spend that time talking instead of just going already, since Discovery's shields weren't up yet at the time. For the sake of their parents, I'm glad Spock stayed behind at the last minute. I had forgotten how much Klingon language usage was in this episode, when L'Rell shows up, talking with Tyler, and I always enjoy well-done Klingon language lines. Both those actors are really good at it. I loved having Kaminar with Siranna in the lead, along with the Klingons under L'Rell's command, turn up to save the day, and I enjoyed that that wasn't at the last minute. The Kelpians have come a long way, and it's nice to get confirmation of that before we head off to the future. Georgiou is already showing some signs of the character development she's undergoing by being around people with ethics. I like how it sets Pike and Spock up for the issues about the direction of their lives that they're going to have to deal with in SNW. There are a few things I don't like about this episode, like the whole premise that they have to send the data into the future to save life in the galaxy and that's the only solution, or the fact that they count on that future suit technology working on the first try, or how much it relies on "destiny," but I'm happy to overlook those for the sake of this excellent, if rushed, episode. I really love the development of Michael and Spock's relationship throughout this season, especially. We don't get very many well worked out sibling relationships in Trek generally. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

Earlier int he season, Spock is furious at Michael, Vulcan emotional control be damned. Now I'm up to episodes 11-12, and it's so interesting to watch them both acknowledging the other's emotions and trying to support each other within their emotional limitations. Then Amanda talking with Michael by subspace as her remaining mother-figure, and then Spock walks into the room, and Amanda saying "Take care of each other. I love you both." What a moment for her seeing her two problematic children actually functioning relatively well together, and what a lot of complexity in a very simple line. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

In line after line, it's clear that Spock is seethingly furious at Michael. He's spitting every logic-adhering line at her. Vulcans don't express emotion, huh? Really? I really enjoy how much emotion Vulcans manage to express while supposedly not expressing it. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

Season 5 review

🪩 For four seasons it never occured to me that Sonequa Martin-Green was wearing a wig. But this season it is so obvious from episode one. I think it's because she's got long hair now and that needs to be hidden under it. Super high resolution/ sharpness is not great for prosthetics and wigs and things like that. It takes me out if it so easily, which annoys me. I shouldn't concentrate on those things. However, on my re-watch I did not see it. Did they go back and retouched the scenes where it was really obvious?
🪩 Four seasons we got puzzle boxes and galaxy ending threats. This season we got… a literal puzzle (and a literal puzzle box) and a potential galaxy ending threat. sigh This remains a point in current Trek that I am pretty bored with. I love Discovery for so many things (the characters, the importance of connection and found family, love and kindness, and second chances), but this is not one of them.
🪩 Speaking of second chances. It just occured to me that not only did Burnham get a second chance, or Georgiou, or Rayner. The show itself got a second chance as well, by leaving the prequal prison and flying forwards in time.
🪩 I wished they would have made "Calypso" a dream that Zora has during her laying dormant. I wished they wouldn't have brought it back in the coda as a red directive mission. I know they wanted to make season 6 about it, and I am not mad that won't happen now. Not everything needs to be explained all the time. I wished writers would leave some things in limbo for us to spin our own stories. We still could do that anyway of course.
🪩 It's so unfortunate that Doug Jones, Emily Coutts, and Oyin Oladejo weren't available for most of the season. And Wilson Cruz for the coda.
🪩 I am so sad that we won't see Rayner again (at least not in more than a possible/ potential cameo/ guest appearance on Academy). He's such a great character. An antagonist, but a very likeable one. He has an arch that develops over the whole season. I love a character with an arch like that. At least we have the novels. I hope there will be more Discovery novels!
🪩 And with that I am also a bit sad that Callum Keith Rennie only got the chance to be great for one season. I would have loved to see more of him.
🪩 Did a crewmember whose name starts with a C die? My theory still stands though.
🪩 The deeper connection to Trek lore besides the main thing was nice: the Kellerun, the Breen, Kovich/ Daniels, Fred, selfsealing stembolts, and all the other little things.
🪩 Good-bye DISCO. You're a great show and I'm going to miss you.

It only took me months to finish my re-watch. I just couldn't bring myself to watch the last episode. I did not want it to end. But the great thing is, I can just start again from the beginning.
