  1. I just finished Star Trek Discovery. Next I'll pick up where I left off with Strange New Worlds.

  2. I'm watching Star Trek Discovery season 5, and these personal transporters worry me. I just saw them beam from the bridge to the ready room. Seems like this is going to create a lazy unfit generation. I'm worried about the health of everyone in the 32nd century.

  4. 📺 Star Trek: Discovery S2 (2019)

I just finished Star Trek: Discovery Season 2

This is the 2nd time watching Discovery and I think I was unfair on my initial watch. I was judging on how much like ST:TNG it was but this is a different, new thing and I really liked it. I really like the characters and while the story telling is different than ST:TNG, it's still good in it's own right.

Looking forward to starting season 3!

  6. CW: Star Trek Discovery in general

I'm re-watching Discovery, just finished season 2 and the first few episodes after the jump to the future in season 3. I really think those episodes right around their jump 930 years into the future are some of the best Trek ever made, for a specific reason. More than any other part of Trek I can think of, neither the characters nor the audience have any clue what comes next, what they're going to find, or how they're going to deal with it. And it's a fair bet they will be underprepared no matter what it is that they find, since their knowledge and technology will be massively out of date. Even for Janeway on the far side of the galaxy, she and we knew the Federation and a familiar world were out there, just very far away, and Neelix had ideas of what they would run into. For Archer, he and his crew may have had no clue what they would find, and have been woefully underprepared for how many people were going to shoot at them, but the audience knew a lot of what he would find. And his ship could go for visits back home on Earth sometimes. This part of Discovery is the only part of Star Trek I can think of where our heroes on the Federation ship are nearly this uninformed, and so are we. It comes through well in the behavior of both Michael and the crew, who seem to be mostly in shock. I like Saru's comment about how being Kelpian makes him more able to deal with fear and uncertainty. I really think s3e1, with Michael crash landing and then having an unbelievable very bad no good day, is brilliant. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

I just finished re-watching s2e14, the end of season 2 of Discovery. The first time I watched it, I thought there was an awful lot going on in one episode, and I had a hard time following all the plots at once as they ran down the hallway with time suit pieces. Now, I still think there's a whole lot going on, but I really love this episode and end of a season. Among various other wonderful bits, I love snarky Commander Nhan and how well she gets along with formerly-Empress Georgiou. I don't think we knew enough about Nhan before this episode to predict that. Losing Admiral Cornwell hit me hard for a fairly minor character. I really liked her: the fact that a psychologist gets promoted to admiral, and how she functions as a woman in command. And that she's older and not aiming for conventionally pretty. I really appreciated the emotional scenes between Culber & Stamets, and between Spock and Michael. They even had a decent reason why Spock and Michael should spend that time talking instead of just going already, since Discovery's shields weren't up yet at the time. For the sake of their parents, I'm glad Spock stayed behind at the last minute. I had forgotten how much Klingon language usage was in this episode, when L'Rell shows up, talking with Tyler, and I always enjoy well-done Klingon language lines. Both those actors are really good at it. I loved having Kaminar with Siranna in the lead, along with the Klingons under L'Rell's command, turn up to save the day, and I enjoyed that that wasn't at the last minute. The Kelpians have come a long way, and it's nice to get confirmation of that before we head off to the future. Georgiou is already showing some signs of the character development she's undergoing by being around people with ethics. I like how it sets Pike and Spock up for the issues about the direction of their lives that they're going to have to deal with in SNW. There are a few things I don't like about this episode, like the whole premise that they have to send the data into the future to save life in the galaxy and that's the only solution, or the fact that they count on that future suit technology working on the first try, or how much it relies on "destiny," but I'm happy to overlook those for the sake of this excellent, if rushed, episode. I really love the development of Michael and Spock's relationship throughout this season, especially. We don't get very many well worked out sibling relationships in Trek generally. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

  10. CW: Star Trek Discovery season 2

I'm re-watching Discovery season 2, and I just love how Michael and Spock's relationship is changing throughout this season. Also, Spock saying "I like science." Earlier int he season, Spock is furious at Michael, Vulcan emotional control be damned. Now I'm up to episodes 11-12, and it's so interesting to watch them both acknowledging the other's emotions and trying to support each other within their emotional limitations. Then Amanda talking with Michael by subspace as her remaining mother-figure, and then Spock walks into the room, and Amanda saying "Take care of each other. I love you both." What a moment for her seeing her two problematic children actually functioning relatively well together, and what a lot of complexity in a very simple line. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

  12. 📺 Star Trek: Discovery S1 (2017)

I just finished Star Trek: Discovery Season 1

So I'm going through a re-watch of Discovery. I think I appreciated it more the second time through. My original complaint was that it didn't feel like Star Trek The Next Generation, which is what I grew up with. But upon reflection, I think the Discovery crew also has a strong moral compass and are doing the right thing, even when it's hard or against the rules.

Honestly, I think the thing giving me that feeling is there is more like personal drama. The personal drama between Burnham and Tyler for example just has no equivalent to TNG. Picard and Beverly had a relationship but Discovery explores these types of relationships in a much deeper and focused way. 3.5 and I'll allow it to round up to 4.

This week, we talk about "Into the Forest I Go", and ask: is disobeying orders a compulsory class at the Academy, or just an elective for people on the command track? antimatterpod.com/236-nixon-br

  21. CW: Discovery s2e9 Project Daedalus

In line after line, it's clear that Spock is seethingly furious at Michael. He's spitting every logic-adhering line at her. Vulcans don't express emotion, huh? Really? I really enjoy how much emotion Vulcans manage to express while supposedly not expressing it. #StarTrek #StarTrekDiscovery

  26. Oh god, this is the #StarTrekDiscovery episode with the stupid turbolift jumping scene.

Why is there so much empty space inside the ship?

  33. Not sure how I missed the Saturn Award nominations, or that voting started last Wednesday, December 4th and runs through December 17th.

I’m not clear on the release period for these awards - I see nominations for Godzilla Minus One and Loki as well as very recent releases like My Old Ass. As ever, the categories have a few oddities — For All Mankind is nominated as a Fantasy television show. There are odd gaps - vfx is a film category but not for television. The increasingly meaningless distinction between linear and streaming productions has been eliminated.

Whatever — It’s great though that this very long running mechanism for acknowledgment and recognition of genre film and television is up and running again.

And I’m personally happy to see nods to a Star Trek Discovery and Lower Decks, Superman and Lois, The Ark, Farscape and others among my fandom favourites.

  35. I watched 2 episodes on Friday, two on Saturday, and 5 today. I can't anymore. Episode 10 has to wait until tomorrow. I'm out for the day. 😵

What I have to say though is that binging that season I like it even more than I did when watching week to week. It's a really good season and might be my second favourite (after season 1). But maybe that's recency bias. Who knows. Doesn't matter. Love Disco!

🪩 Saru is back! Rillack is back! YAY Only Detmer and Owosekun are missing.
🪩 Awww, space dads have to let their space kid fly. Adira's going to do just fine, dads, I promise.
🪩 Undercover mission, here we go. This is going to be fun!
    🪩 Action Saru once more?
🪩 Indeed, now is not the ideal time. But, this is what we were all waiting for. ❤️

🪩 Moll is fearless and she‘s good.
    🪩 Love Hy‘Rell immediately.
🪩 Love the robe, and that necklace. Why can‘t I buy it yet?
🪩 🤩 The Discovery approaching the Archive is so very beautiful. Love the angle and the blue.
    🪩 A Kwejian artifact. 😢
🪩 I love that library. What they did to expand it into what we see here is amazing. Beautiful!
    🪩 Hy‘Rell is hilarious!
🪩 How does Michael immediately go and press the card? Would you have pressed the card? I wouldn‘t. At least not within 2 seconds of laying my eyes on it. Or does it say "press here"?
    🪩 As I said, Hy‘Rell is hilarious.
🪩 Oh Book! 😭 That is so beautiful. To have exhibits put at a place of honour to not forget lost cultures is amazing. And to allow Book to take the piece with him, too. ❤️
🪩 Oooh, nice transition. But what happened?
🪩 I love how mindscape Book is moving in his robe. 🔥
    🪩 „May you gain knowledge elsewhere.“ 😆
🪩 Ok, I‘m sorry, I have to say it, because it‘s a pet peeve of mine: Labyrinths aren‘t mazes, and mazes aren‘t labyrinths. They are two very different things. The thing Michael finds herself in is a maze. Not a labyrinth. Yes, she correctly calls it a maze, but the two words still are used interchangeably. breaths Ok, moving on…
🪩 I wanna pick Michael's little outburst about having to prove her worth constantly as my Captain‘s Speech moment for our current challenge. There‘s so much in there!
🪩 Adira and Paul have their own Warp Particles Moment! 😃 Even two. 😆
    🪩 Hysperians get mentioned, yay!
🪩 Her first word after waking up was „Book!“ 🤭
    🪩 😱 The books!

    🪩 Nhan!!
🪩 Having Moll in sickbay is a security risk. Don‘t say I didn‘t warn ya.
🪩 I‘m a bit confused here. Where is Fed HQ? They did speed to Earth last season. Where did they go from there? And why? And why this nebula?
    🪩 Go T‘Rina!
🪩 Rayner, watch your mouth. This will not be tolerated... and he got sent outside.
🪩 Tilly thinking about her cadets. They will manage, Tilly, they will manage.
🪩 Hugh rocking that cool vest. 🔥
    🪩 Betazoid Dr Marina! ❤️
🪩 Of course it‘s Reno! This woman is full of amazing surprises.
🪩 Seven of Limes. LOVE that. (It's a meta word play, people, calm down.) Want to try it. Give me all your recipes! 🍸 I bet there's Kellerun citrus mash in there.
🪩 I would really love a bunch of Trek characters without a traumatic past.
    🪩 T‘Rina slaying it.
🪩 Moll overwhelming Starfleet Security so easily. I told you so! Another thing they‘ll never learn.
🪩 Nooooo, L‘ak! 😭 This is really not how your story should end. I had hoped there'd be a happy ever after.

🪩 Though I wished they would say things like „This is a genuine 21st century [American] legal pad.“ Because this is not a global thing.
🪩 P+! Why are there no subtitles to Hugh speaking Spanish with his abuela???
🪩 No, Hugh, this AI therapy thing is creepy! We went through this with the holodecks 800 years ago (Barkley and LaForge anyone??). When do these people ever learn? 😔
🪩 Great seeing Burnham show her xenoanthropological skills here.
🪩 I love Hugh for walking to the lab to speak with Paul, and not transporting.
🪩 Now that are some powerful singing bowls.
🪩 Those woods give me Robin Hood vibes.
🪩 „Go chase your moss. I‘m the queen of endurance.“ Go, Tilly!
🪩 Definitely styrofoam rock. No scans needed. 😜
