  1. The original Airport (1970) is quite different from the sequels. It isn't a disaster movie as such. It's an aviation thriller (and a good one) but mostly it's a typical Ross Hunter-produced melodrama. And it's thoroughly enjoyable melodrama.

  6. Midnight Lace is a 1960 Ross Hunter-produced US crime film set in London which gave Doris Day her last, and best, serious dramatic role. It's almost a proto-giallo, but with echoes of GASLIGHT. A top-notch mystery/suspense/psychological thriller.

  7. All That Heaven Allows (1955), a glorious melodrama directed by Douglas Sirk and produced by Ross Hunter. Middle-aged widow Jane Wyman falls in love with her gardener (Rock Hudson).

Melodrama has always been despised by critics but I enjoy it, and this one has class.
