  13. To Have and to Hold (1963), A British Edgar Wallace B-movie scripted by Jimmy Sangster. A cop gets involved with a woman who thinks he ex wants to kill her. Stretches credibility just a tad at times but overall enjoyable and nicely twisted.

  14. Whistle Stop is a 1946 film noir starring George Raft and Ava Gardner. It doesn't go where you think it's going. Ava had gone to Chicago to find glamour, excitement, money. Now she's come back to the loser she loves. Excellent underrated movie.

  15. Hold Back Tomorrow (1955), a film noir about a man about to be hanged. He makes a last request - a woman for the night. He gets down-on-her-luck whore Dora (Cleo Moore). Cleo Moore is superb. Great movie. Somehow it got past the Hays Code.

  16. Outside the Wall (1950) is a solid film noir. Richard Basehart is a man who's spent 15 years in prison and finds life on the outside scary. He has trouble with dames and a chance encounter from the past drags him into noir nightmare world.

  17. William Castle's Undertow (1949). Tony has a flirtation in Reno with a pretty schoolteacher but he's on his way to Mary his sweetheart whose uncle is a gangster, Tony's a nice guy with a shady past and now he's framed for murder. Enjoyable.

  18. Chicago Deadline is a good 1949 hardboiled crime thriller with just the faintest hint of film noir, with Alan Ladd in top form as a reporter investigating a murder. There's an ambiguous femme fatale figure and a touch of cynicism.

  19. Lady on a Train (1945) is based on a Leslie Charteris story. Deanna Durbin witnesses a murder from a train window. A lighthearted comic murder mystery with a decided screwball comedy flavour. It’s rather delightful and Durbin is adorable.

  20. Three On a Ticket (1947), the fourth of PRC's Mike Shayne PI B-movies. A guy walks into Shayne's office and drops dead. He was a PI as well, but an unsavoury one. Then a blonde wants to hire Shayne to kill her husband. A good solid B-picture.

  21. Act of Murder (1964), a British Edgar Wallace B-movie, involves a romantic triangle and from the start the plot twists come thick and fast. A psychological thriller with lots of paranoia and a pleasingly hard-edged nasty streak. Great stuff.

  22. We Shall See, a 1964 British Edgar Wallace thriller with some nasty emotional betrayals and twisted relationships. At the centre is a woman who thinks everyone hates her. Turns out to be more interesting and quirky than you expect. Good film.

  23. Marlowe (1969), a surprisingly good adaptation of Raymond Chandler's The Little Sister scripted by Stirling Silliphant, with James Garner making an effective Philip Marlowe. Marlowe encounters hippies and lots of late 60s California decadence.

  24. Borsalino (1970), a gorgeous-looking hugely entertaining French gangster film set in the 30s with Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo oozing charisma and sexiness and coolness. Don’t overthink this movie. Just wallow in the style.

  25. A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Friends of Eddie Coyle.

Eddie Coyle is a small-time crook trying to cut a deal with the police to stay out of jail, while at the same time making ends meet by buying guns for a gang of Boston bank robbers. A taut, tense - and yes, gloomy - 70s classic. Robert Mitchum is awesomely good as Eddie: tough one moment, lost the next.

  26. A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Taking of Pelham 123.

Another great movie that never needed a remake (even if I did like Denzel Washington), this tough, tense thriller has Walter Matthau's transit cop going up against an icily cool Robert Shaw, who's hijacked a New York subway train and is demanding a one million dollar ransom. The dialogue crackles, the pace is relentless, and the ending just perfect.

  27. A favourite film a day for 365 days: Drug War.

Third and final Johnnie To film. This starts as it means to go on and the accompanying picture is a pretty perfect illustration. A car crashes into a restaurant. Police trail suspect drug smugglers on a bus. Their superior goes undercover as a drug kingpin and the film barrels relentlessly along to a massive, bleak conflagration in the streets of a fishing port.

  28. A favourite film a day for 365 days: Breaking News.

For the opening scene, with the camera prowling along a street, up the facade of a building, into a room, back out and down to a waiting police car before, finally, winding back and forth as it observes the gunfight that breaks out between crooks and police. *Sometimes* style is enough.

  29. A favourite film a day for 365 days: The Mission.

Quirky, unpredictable film about a disparate group of gunmen hired to protect a triad leader. It's not so much the plot as the characters and the staging that's so engaging, with as much attention given to the five kicking a scrap of paper around while waiting for their boss, to long, wordless shoot-outs in deserted Hong Kong streets.

  30. Warning Shot is a forgotten 1966 crime thriller. A well-crafted superbly shot movie, old-fashioned in a good way, with a fine performance by David Janssen as a cop facing a manslaughter rap. Joan Collins is very good as his wife. Worth seeing.

  31. Vice Raid (1959) is a crime potboiler which tries to be as lurid as possible given the constraints of the 50s. The reason to see it is Mamie van Doren playing a bad girl with the body of a goddess and the morals of an alley cat. She's fabulous.

  32. The Spider and the Fly is a 1949 British crime thriller directed by Robert Hamer. Cop Maubert obsessively hunts master criminal Philippe and hopes to use Philippe's mistress to trap him. Quite good but with an out-of-left-field ending.
