In the deep green.
The banks of the Coal River in Richmond are clad in a thicket of willow and other trees whose roots hold the riverbank together and whose foliage shelters walkers in summer. We might consider this as one of the numerous ecosystems services that trees provide.

THIS TASMANIA…
Taking a walk along the Coal River in Richmond, Tasmania. The river drains the Coal Valley which, despite the name, is not a coal mining area. The early Nineteenth Century coal mine proved inviable, the coal low grade.
The valley is today a significant agricultural region with grazing, stone fruit orchards (apricots and cherries) and grapes for Tasmania’s wine industry.

In the historic village of Richmond in southern Tasmania, a forager checks out ripening pears on a tree in a public park.
Crab apples also grow in the park with rosehips nearby, all wild harvest.
