ALONG THE TRAIL…
It's an annual pilgrimage, the Turning of the Fagus, and it brings people from the cities and into the mountains. That was us as the end of May approached, and with it the end of the autumn of 2025.Join us for a walk to view the fagus, to follow a rough trail to a mountain lake and to a cold weather camp by the waters of the Tyenna River.

THE OUTDOOR MUSEUM
A roof of galvanised iron faded by the sun, walls of brick, sash windows and the symmetrical formalism of the Georgian style signify the age of this old house in Battery Point, Hobart.There are many houses like this in Tasmania. This one is in good condition, having been renovated at some time in the not-distant past and maintained in good order.
That is the 1250m of kunanyi-Mt Wellington off in the distance with the 120m high cliffline of the Organ Pipes visible, a wall of vertical dolerite oozed out of the earth somewhere in deep time.
Battery Point is an early Hobart locale on the banks of the Derwent. For those who read stories of a city’s history in its buildings, who discern tales of wealth and decline, industrial change and aspiration in the its architectural styles, Battery Point offers an eclectic collection spanning the late Nineteenth Century through Art Deco to Modernism. Battery Point is a place where you walk, not drive.

In the deep green.The banks of the Coal River in Richmond are clad in a thicket of willow and other trees whose roots hold the riverbank together and whose foliage shelters walkers in summer. We might consider this as one of the numerous ecosystems services that trees provide.

HERE ON THE COAST…
Disused boat shed at Dodges Ferry.An adjacent and disused boat shed burned down last year. Boat sheds are found on several local beaches on the shore of the bay. This one is located just past the sandstone headland at the eastern end of Okines Beach.

Spotlight
A young tree sprouts in a sliver of light in the space between boulders. Plants in alpine areas take hold in the unlikeliest of places, yet thrive where they logically should not.
The plant is too young for me to identify. If there is someone who knows, please advise me.

IN TASMANIA…
So, this is why Tunnel Bay is called that. Because… there really is a tunnel there.We were on our way back from a walk to Shipstern Bluff when in a spur of the moment decision we decided to make the side trip to Tunnel Bay. Would it be worth the effort?
The turnoff is signposted and you come across it as you traverse the flatish plateau densely covered in tea tree (Malaleuca, I think) between the sea and the steep escarpment behind. The national parks service has constructed numerous stone steps to the bay and as you descend you realise that you will have to walk up all of them on the way back.
Tunnel Bay is best described as a crescent-shaped rocky beach of large, water-rounded stones. The parks service has constructed a couple seats there in a small clearing above the beach, a good place to take a break and have a snack.
The sea was calm the day we walked in, however, like Shipstern Bluff, I imagine the bay is subject to big waves coming in with the south swell.
Shipsterns and Tunnel Bay make a good day’s walk for those interested in a little exercise and the rugged coast of the Tasman Peninsula.
So, was the side trip to Tunnel Bay worthwhile? Sure was.

SOMEWHERE ALONG THE TRACK…
Day is almost done we stand where the land meets the water here on Frecinet Peninsula. The sun sinks towards the horizon only to be obscured by a cloud bank, something I should say is not all that uncommon hereabouts.That is the Tasmanian east coast over there across the bay, on the horizon. Somewhere over there is the town of Swansea.
It is now almost half way through the last month of summer and the sun is destined to disappear around 8.30pm. It will be light for some time after that, though. Here in Tasmania at 42°S we have a long summer twilight, the longest day giving us 19 hours and 53 minutes from first to last light.
This is how it is here on the east coast of Australia’s southernmost land mass this late afternoon. The sea calm, the wind mild and gentle, the sun sharing its life-giving warmth, the view wide and uplifting of mind and spirit.#tasmania #frecinetpeninsula #colesbay #seascapes #landscapes #sunsets #hobartandbeyond #photography #landscapephotography

An epic 24 hours at South East Cape Bay with 4m seas crashing onto Lion Rock all through the day and into the night.

Witness the full power of the Southern Ocean.
With a 4 metre swell and an incoming tide, standing near Lion Rock I felt increasingly vulnerable, but could not tear my eyes away from this incredible spectacle of nature’s forces.
Both the spray and the late afternoon sun gave the scen a monochromatic look, even though this photograph is in full colour.
South East Cape Bay is at Tasmania’s southern-most point (outside of offshore islands). Getting there is an easy 2 hour walk from Cockle Creek.

Southern Ocean Waves at Lion Rock
A friend and I went down to Lion Rock to experience a predicted 4m swell, amongst other things.
This video gives an idea of just how powerful and massive these waves were. There is a photograph of just one of the waves, which the video will never be able to show.
I wasn’t sure whether to show the video or photo first, but the video won out.

What an experience!
I went down to South East Cape Bay with a mate to watch the 4 metre swell roll in. The waves created were almighty in stature and sound. Watching them crash on Lion Rock was awesome!
The real treat came as the sun set behind the waves, with the sea spray creating these incredible shapes, like magnetic fields.
I have tonnes of these images, which will release over the coming weeks.
