Maybe I'm blind but is there any way to monitor a running #resticProfile job?

I know for a plain #restic process I could keep a watcher attached to stdout and tell it to send me json status updates.

From what I gather resticprofile can toggle pre/post/success/fail hooks and write a statusfile after a job is done - I'm mainly interested in how far along a job is though..

I tried to set a global exclude file variable (as I assumed it would exist when you can set the repo and encryption key) and saw the discussion [1] around environment variables (since 2017). Sadly no exclude file var in sight.

I found resticprofile [2] that comes to the rescue. Has exactly what I was looking for.

@DocM Erst hab ich #Borg #backup genutzt.
Dann hatte ich damit Probleme.
Jetzt nutze ich #Restic und #Resticprofile, auch weil es 10 mal schneller ist und es weniger Probleme mit dem Cloudspeicher gab.

It's okay. For sure more declarative, but not really seeing a gigantic difference. Yet. But I feel like it was progress.

Als Hoster vermisse ich da noch @hetzner , die bieten da unterschiedliche Schnittstellen an, dein präferiertes mit WebDAV und SFTP ist auch mit dabei.

Auch wenn ich @cryptomator eine wunderbare Software finde.
Für Automatisierung empfehle ich @restic in Zusammenspiel mit #resticprofile . (1/2)

@shtrom I beg you, simplify this and use something like #resticprofile around #restic. This allows you to run your tasks as part of the backup, and you avoid wrapping scripts around it.

@billiglarper Wegen Plattenplatz musst du entscheiden, dass wirst du wissen.

Synology oder QNAP ist Geschmacksache und wird beides aus meinem Freundes/Bekannten/Kolleg*innen-Kreis verwendet.
Beachte dass Synology inzwischen nur noch zertifizierte Festplatten zulässt.

Viele #Backup Software kann ja komprimieren und deduplizieren.

After procrastinating for way too long, I have finally set up regular backups of my laptop and achieved the 3-2-1 strategy 🙌

But the reason I was procrastinating this is because I couldn't decide on a good #restic wrapper! And, to this day, none of the options appeal to me

- #Backrest can't do stdin, --keep-within-*, and passwords from command
- #autorestic can't do stdin, and scheduled check/forget
- #resticprofile is too complicated and has a different mental model

Die Systeme werden per Ansible aufgesetzt, so dass ich mir um "Liste der Pakete" keine Gedanken machen muss. Trotzdem sind z. B. /usr mit im Backup, ist einfacher so etwas zu vergleichen oder wieder herzustellen.

@diesch @nick_lenzen Hier fast genauso. Von Borg bin ich aus Gründen weg. Clients die ich schon mit #ansible aufsetze mit #restic und #resticprofile. Gesichert wird /home mit —exclude-Caches und punktuell gesetzten CACHEDIR.TAG Dateien. (1/2)

in #resticprofile I have a "run-before" hook. If this hook fails, I am looking for a way to "just stop" the backup, but do not raise an error.

Example: I'm using this hook to mount a backup disk (which is - intentionally - not always mounted). If the disk is not available, do not run the backup. But also do not raise an error.

Backups itself are monitored differently.

Any ideas?

Today: The #restic wrapper #resticprofile doesn't apply the configured `nice` priority.
