  1. Hidden Hawk

Here’s a red‑tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) I spotted one morning while Charlie and I were out walking. The bird was part of a pair perched in a small stand of trees, doing their best to stay tucked away and unbothered. From a distance the scene looks great, but once you zoom in, the image starts to show its limits. I kept wishing I’d brought my big camera that morning — of course, that was the day I didn’t. I had a pretty powerful camera with me, just not the most powerful one in my arsenal.

We’ve gone back that way a few times since, camera in hand, hoping to catch them again. No luck so far. Some birds give you one chance and then vanish into the trees like they were never there at all.

  17. Aerial Stare

This red‑tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) passed nearby but high overhead. I wanted to catch a shot at the maximum focal length of my setup, but there just wasn’t enough time. The challenge with long focal lengths is that the closer they bring the subject, the narrower the field of view becomes—so actually finding and locking onto a flying bird gets a lot harder.

So this image was taken at the minimum focal length of my rig, 280mm. It’s not quite as crisp as I like, but honestly, it’s hard to complain when a hawk is staring straight back at you.

  22. Red tailed hawk being harassed by some very loud crows. There might’ve been a raven there too. One looked pretty big.
