as you know but others may not, #TheBeaverton is a #Canadian satire site, and this is a good one:

  4. With a bunch of new folks likely coming into the fediverse in the coming days, it is time for a re- #introduction

I am a #Professor of #Physics at #QueensUniversity in Ontario, on secondment to #SNOLAB to serve as the Research Group Manager. SNOLAB is #Canada's deep underground science lab.

I am a #writer, mostly of non-fiction science books for general and specialized audiences.

    I love federated social media. I love #teaching, #astronomy, #astrophysics, #DarkMatter, and #neutrinos.

  5. Participatory Food Systems Governance Project Update

Our primary research question asks: How do food movement actors and organizations engage in food systems governance, while also modeling alternative food futures?

  6. A moment in our Media and Politics in Canada 🇨🇦 class today. These were our six wonderful seminar co-leaders. The class discussed time and space in Canadian media theory through Innis, Grant, McLuhan and other scholars of communication. They also vibed The Hallowe’en theme to everyone’s delight

  7. Ray Price’s death was announced last week.

Ray’s mapping in the Canadian Rockies was instrumental in advancing our understanding of lithosphere dynamics and mountain building. A description of Ray’s career can be found in his Penrose award citation.

  8. Goal completed! #Ottawa to #Kingston! This time last year, I struggled for 20KPH on a two hour ride. Averaged 22.9 KPH for over 7 hours to get me to Kingston Ontario

Currently on the train coming back to ottawa 😊

  9. @jalefkowit I used to live in #KingstonOntario when I went to #QueensUniversity, which has a medical program and is partnered with a teaching hospital, and combined with the physics department, required enough oxygen to support Kingston Oxygen supply, KO2 for short.

We saw all these KO2 trucks driving around and came up with a tounge-in-cheek conspiracy theory... KO2 is an oxygen cabal! Stop supporting them by not breathing 🤣

It was before the whole "Big $MONOPOLY", but Big Oxygen!

  10. After an exhilarating two days at #QueensUniversity, I am in Albany now and ready to visit with students and colleagues at #SienaCollege over the next two days. I am delivering a colloquium at Siena on Friday, and I am very excited to be here!

  11. Had a nice, relaxing first evening in #Kingston last night. Today it is time to connect with people at #QueensUniversity on a range of topics.

  12. Road trip! Headed to Kingston and #QueensUniversity for a few days of work there before continuing to #SienaCollege in #NewYork where I am giving a colloquium. I will spend the weekend with my parents in #Connecticut before returning to #Sudbury.

  13. I had a really wonderful time in #Kingston this past week. It started out rough on Sunday ... I picked up a mild stomach virus. But I was good by Monday evening and then was able to engage with my colleagues at #QueensUniversity on a range of issues: bubble chamber dark matter detector operations for #PICO, strategies for enhancing #neutrino-less double beta decay projects in #Canada, ways to engage more students at @SNOLAB, and more!

  14. Not only does #QueensUniversity have an asteroid named in honour of the university, but now that asteroid has been observed to host a small orbiting companion!

Nice way to start the day, learning about both of these things.

  15. Getting very excited for the "#Astronomy on Tap" event in #Kingston next week!

From the #McDonaldInstitute account on X:

"We're back! On Thurs, Nov 30th, Nik Arora (#QueensUniversity) hosts a debate between astrophysicists Mark Richardson (#McDonaldInstitute
), and Steve Sekula (@SNOLAB ) on physics theory vs. experimentation!
    Join us at the #KingstonBrewPub
for drinks, snacks, prizes, and ASTRONOMY!"

  16. The past few days at #QueensUniversity have been remarkable, both for @SNOLAB activities and for me professionally. First, it is ALWAYS excellent to touch base with colleagues, especially students and post-docs, where they are. Great conversations about #darkmatter, job hunting, inclusivity, strategies for navigating the research environment, and even #imposterism. Also good progress on organizing for the SNOLAB Experiment Forum, which I co-chair. This is my last half-day here!

  17. It was a lovely day in #Kingston. I am getting a ton of things done while I am at #QueensUniversity this week, both for @SNOLAB and for the #PICO and #HALO experiments. It is also nice to work to support the students and post-doc here who are working hard to do great science at SNOLAB.

  18. Good first day at #QueensUniversity. Touched base with colleagues, as well as the PhD student working with me on the #PICO experiment. Really nice to have some long conversations across a range of issues.

Made a huge batch of additions to the “to do” list. Setup sub-steps for many of them. Started working through those and made good progress.

Made some improvements to #PICO monitoring software, including screen captures of our software-based data-acquisition system panel! Yay, info!

  19. Road trip! I will be spending most of the week working from #QueensUniversity in #Kingston. Looking forward to a nice drive today.

For now, enjoying a morning on the patio.

  20. Hill’s thesis is on the #HALO (Helium and Lead Observatory) supernova early warning detector. In fact, this is how we met … almost in the first weeks of me joining @SNOLAB and #QueensUniversity.

HALO consists of almost 80 tonnes of lead embedded with 128 very sensitive helium-3 neutron counters. Neutrinos make neutrons, which get captured by He-3 and result in energy emission. Neutrinos should reach us first from a local supernova explosion.

  21. Very excited for the M.Sc. thesis defense today of R. Hill. If successful (of this I have no doubt), he will join me as a Ph.D. Student at #QueensUniversity working on the #PICO bubble chamber #DarkMatter #experiment. We’ll be operating and analyzing PICO-40L (40l of freon, about 70kg of target) this year and next, and constructing PICO-500 (500kg of target) next year. It is an exciting time in the hunt for dark matter!

  22. It has been one year since @jodi and I moved from the U.S. to Canada and started this new phase of our lives at #SNOLAB and #QueensUniversity. While there have been challenges here and there (international moves are always hard), it has been a wonderful experience.

#SNOLAB is an especially excellent environment, driven entirely by the people who work or conduct research at the lab. This is a great people-driven, and people-supported, science place.
