After graduating with an engineering degree from #MIT, current US Senator, and son of #Mexican immigrants, #AlexPadilla recalls being lured into politics in 1990s in wake of #Prop187 ballot measure overwhelmingly passing in #California.
The #PacificRim state's #voters supported denying illegal #immigrants social services and #education by a 58% majority, finding widespread margins of approval in 51 out of 58 counties. This total included massive #LosAngeles County, where it won by margin of eight % points amongst Padilla's own neighbors.
Since then, voter sentiment in state seems to have changed...in state where almost half of California’s children were born to an immigrant parent, approx 72% of voters surveyed now bagree presence of immigrants provide a "benefit" to the state, although only 31% of #GOP voters agree.
