#FreeSoftware developers deserve support, be it through a collecting society or a statutory remuneration scheme, but not at the expense of software freedom! https://u.fsf.org/46w #PostOpen

Yesterday at the Barcamp Graz we had an engaging discussion about #PostOpen, an ongoing effort to address loopholes in #OpenSource licenses that allow free riders to profit without giving back. Here's the supplemental slides I used for the introduction. #bcg25

"Post-Open is a new paradigm designed to address the present problems of Open Source, which have become obvious to everyone." - by Bruce Perens

One thing I've been seeing a bit of lately is the "post open source" movement. Not sure what to make of it other than it's an alternative way to govern the commons?

I either missed or forgot about Bruce Perens' DebConf talk "What Comes after Open Source?" which sounds a lot like my current research question but, based on what has now been released under the label of #PostOpen, goes in a very different direction: https://postopen.org/
Really curious to see the reaction to this. I've already seen it described as "class-collaborationism"... 🍿

#OpenSource world's #BrucePerens emits draft #PostOpenZeroCost License
The basic idea is companies making more than $5 million annually by using #PostOpen #software in a paid-for product would be required to pay 1 percent of their revenue back to this administrative organization, a 501(c)(6) non-profit, which would distribute the funds to the maintainers and #developers of the participating open source project(s)

@olaf I have asked @BrucePerens_K6BP to come and speak at a @nluug conference a number of times, but it never came to a realization, so far.
This ‘post open’ idea is an interesting view on how to change the world. Part of the ideas of Bruce are already well embedded in the business model of my company. Much more so than the ‘Stallman ideas’. And they work, but it is a lengthy process to actually be successful.
I will still be promoting #opensource everywhere though. The #postopen narrative will need a lot of explaining and exposure first.

Braucht es ein neues offenes #Lizenzmodell?
Spannende Diskussion auch im Kontext von KI und der Nutzung frei zugänglicher Ressourcen zum Trainieren geschlossener Modelle.
