  1. Here are some crops from "The Twisted Feast," commissioned by The Etches Collection. It features a bunch of fossil species from the museum and the Late Jurassic #Kimmeridge Clay: a bait ball of #Thrissops, #Grendelius and #Nannopterygius #ichthyosaurs, diving #Rhamphorhynchus #pterosaurs, #Caturus, #Gyrodus, and #Pachycormus fishes, a #Dakosaurus croc, and three #Kimmerosaurus.

  3. @DinoDadReviews Ooh, I love the textured images, lovely!

That's not a skeleton of Plesiosaurus on the Plesiosaurus spread, though, it's clearly based on a skeleton of Rhomaleosaurus from Yorkshire (the one I did my PhD on, so there). And there's also something very odd going on with its anatomy.

  6. Mystery of very odd #elasmosaur finally solved: One of North America's most famous #fossils IDd as new species phys.org/news/2025-05-mystery-

"Long-necked and measuring in at 12m, #Traskasaura sandrae possessed heavy, sharp, robust teeth, ideal for crushing... Its unique suite of adaptations, a strange mix of primitive and derived traits, enabled it to hunt prey from above, perhaps one of the first #plesiosaurs to do so... The 85-million-year-old fossils are not new to science, though, far from it"

  7. New addition to the bookshelf, β€˜Ocean Life in the Time of Dinosaurs’ by Bardet et al. First impressions are positive. It’s great to see obscure groups getting coverage with plenty of diagrams and artwork, not just the #plesiosaurs, #ichthyosaurs and #mosasaurs.

  8. My 25 years of palaeoart chronology...

Here's some zooms into the packaging art for my Plesiosaurus coin design. This was for the 2021 Mary Anning Coin Collection, from The Royal Mint and the Natural History Museum.

  9. Delve into the history and inspiration behind the 1950s Marx Kronosaurus plastic toy: dinotoyblog.com/kronosaurus-ma

This is one of the most insightful and thorough reviews to date on the @dinotoyblog, and also the final Marx figure to be checked off the reviewer's to-do list.

N.B. Controversially, the skeleton may not even be Kronosaurus (see, Eiectus).

  10. Apex predators in prehistoric Colombian oceans would have snacked on killer whales today phys.org/news/2025-01-apex-pre paper: academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/ar

"The Paja ecosystem thrived with #plesiosaurs, #ichthyosaurs, and abundant #invertebrates, giving rise to one of history's most intricate marine food webs... The discovery of giant marine reptile apex predators occupying a seventh trophic level underscores the Paja ecosystem's unmatched diversity and complexity"

  11. I've updated my plesiosaur genera stratigraphic chart again with some more recently named taxa. I can hardly keep up! Please let me know if I've missed any.

  12. Oh my, what big eyes you have!

The orbital openings of the plesiosaur Ophthalmothule make up a massive 29% of its skull length. The orbits are the big grey ovals in this illustration. What a googly-eyed creature it must've been in life.

The full paper describing Ophthalmothule by Roberts et al. (2020) is open access on #PeerJ peerj.com/articles/8652/

"#Pliosaurs were a type of short-necked #plesiosaurs: marine #reptiles built for speed compared to their long-necked cousins... They were ecological equivalents of today’s #KillerWhales and would have eaten a range of prey including squid-like #cephalopods, large #fish and other #MarineReptiles."

  15. An ancient marine reptile #fossil was excavated, 1980s, from Shag Point rocks, nearly a complete skeleton, an #elasmosaur.

And belongs to a unique group of southern-hemisphere #plesiosaurs called the #Aristonectinae 2/2

  16. The Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre is not on #Mastodon yet, but they just posted somewhere else πŸ€“ , featuring my book #ThePlesiosaursNeck and @TetZoo's new book Ancient Sea Reptiles:

"We’ve had some awesome new toys in to go along side our books! These make a perfect souvenir after visiting our Attenborough #seadragon and Raffle the Plesiosaur!"

Well worth a visit this summer and you might even find some fossils on the beach!

  17. Kronosaurus (Jurassic World Dino Trackers, Wild Roar by Mattel): dinotoyblog.com/kronosaurus-ju

"Most noteworthy is the addition of barnacles across the entire figure. They are minuscule but unmistakable for what they are, being round raised bumps with a small divot in their center"

  18. I've despised Jurassic World and everything it stands for since seeing the first film in the cinema in 2015. I haven't given the franchise a penny of my money since... until now. 😩

The bastards have only gone and found my Achilles' heel – plesiosaur toys. Grrr.

  20. #FossilAdventCalendar Day 8

The #PacificNorthwest makes its #AdventCalendar debut today in the form of one of our most impressive #fossils: the #PuntledgeRiver #elasmosaur. #Cretaceous #marine #reptiles are common from the Great Plains, but this specimen is from #VancouverIsland, #BritishColumbia πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦. Found in 1988 by a 12 year old taking a walk with her dad, the #fossil, housed in the #Courtenay #museum, shows that these long-necked #plesiosaurs inhabited the #ancient #seas of the #PNW as well.

  21. Working my way through some #Mesozoic marine reptile #palaeoart I have drawn. After yesterday's #ichthyosaurs, here are two #plesiosaurs - the extremely long necked #Albertonectes, and the huge predatory pliosaur #Kronosaurus.
