    We had email accounts when I was a PhD student in Cambridge in the late 1980s, but strangely I did not use it. The notion did not appeal to me. Hard for my current I to understand my previous I.

    I had my first proper lectureship post in the early 1990s, and at that point email became my main communication tool. Can' remember my first email message on that system.

    The university ran on Unix and our email client was elm (not to be confused with the later programming language). From home, remote access was via modem and telnet.

    I still think of email as primarily straight text. No formatting except paragraph breaks. I miss elm.

  2. A perfect example why I refuse to use #HTMLemail. My father spotted this email (he's the treasurer for Brisbane WICEN) and noticed the odd figure.

    K9-mail would only show the HTML version, which made the scam look _very_ authentic.

    I hit the 3 dots and forwarded it as an attachment to my own email address to have a good look. Thunderbird's #PlainTextEmail view laid bare the scam.
