  1. "We can expect many more works from #Philodemus in the current collection, once we’re able to scale up this technique. But there could be other text as well — an #Aristotle dialog, a lost history of Livy, a lost Homeric epic work, a poem from Sappho — who knows what treasures are hidden in these lumps of ash.

And there is the hope of a much bigger library still in the ground, since two levels of the villa remain unexcavated."

  2. The new possibilities of deciphering the #Herculaneum papyri with #AI will have a deep impact on our understanding of #Epicurean #philosophy as many of the up until now lost texts were written by #Philodemus who was a known Epicurean at the time and the owner of this library.

More on this in this very detailed article. The first deciphered text seems to be a treatise on pleasure and music. I'm really looking forward to the first commented editions.

  3. The very exciting news today in #classics is that Brent Searles' team read several column-inches of a scroll charred in the 79 CE eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.

The bad news is that it's a deathly dull treatise on pleasure by #Philodemus, an Epicurean philosopher of little note.

The worse news is that he was Philosopher-in-Residence at this villa. The scrolls could be mostly or all his writing. Maybe even his drafts.
