  1. Cosmic Celler Vitalitat 2023 Parellada and Muscat of Alexandria. Yellow with some turbidity. Medium intensity bose but good definition, with stone fruit, candied citrus peel, ripe pineapple, and some white flower. On the palate, the attack is good, quite creamy, sparkling, very good acidity, soft bitterness, long and well-defined. #wine #vino #tastingnotes #naturalwine #petnat #petillant cellartracker.com/user.asp?iUs

  2. A most excellent #PetNat from #Georgia. Mamastan is a Tsolikouri Pétillant.
Fruity (appley) and fresh perfect for summer.
This wine was made by Nino at Ori Marani (Igoeti, Georgia).

  3. 'China's New Wave of Natural Wine: Adversity has sparked diversity for China's winemakers, with niche wines emerging in what was a very traditional wine market."

    My article in Wine Searcher.

In sum, Chinese wines became more diverse during the COVID era, driven by global inspiration, local ambition and economic necessity.

  4. Model tea. Pairing a traditional Chinese beverage -- tea -- with its modern wine industry seem a natural.

These Longjing-, oolong- and jasmine-infused Chardonnays were made by winemaker Liu Jianjun of Lingering Clouds in Ningxia.

Details on these pet-nats plus tasting notes and where to buy the bottles at the link. Have to say it was a lot of fun sharing these with friends and seeing their responses!

  6. Boozy bunny! The first Year of the Rabbit-themed wine I have seen this season.

Magnum-sized red blend by the independent winemaker Jianjun 'Johnny' Liu of Lingering Clouds in Ningixa.

Blend of 90% Syrah, 5% Viognier and 5% Dunkelfelder, aged for 10 months in old French oak. I will do a taste test soon!

Liu, who packed up his life and moved to Ningxia to make wine a decade ago, will also soon release a pet-nat series, which follows up on his first attempts with this style last year. (His Muscat was spot on.)

I was determined to visit Liu on my Ningxia trip in September and did so on the way to the airport, impressed by both his dedication and tank samples. He is part of a wave of winemakers sourcing grapes, renting equipment, creating their own labels and selling directly to consumers.

  9. @SLBriscoe We just had our first dedicated custom crush facility open recently (previous custom crush was all down at wineries with excess space … and all the issues that brings with it). It is run by a pair of brothers, viticulturists and winemakers.

There now wines in almost every retail price bracket from $15 to $150 that are competitive with other regions. And, compared to many other states, there is a significant mass of wineries (500+ licenses, 400ish active wineries) turning out a huge range of products. Everything from locally inspired aromatized wine (think Appalachian Cynar) to #PetNat and #orangewine :orangewine: (@simonjwoolf) to 0/0 #naturalwine. If you can’t tell, I love #VaWine, especially the slightly more off-kilter ones …
