  1. So a couple of trans friends and I are playing Potion Explosion, and guess who sits next to us

    esr, in the flesh

  2. Oh hey, the #Penguicon schedule is out (on sched, not the website)

I'll be teaching swords Friday at 4PM penguicon2026.sched.com/event/

EDIT: Apparently they're still adjusting the schedule

  3. Submitted to #Penguicon, we'll see if it's a good idea or not.

  4. So over on In the group there is a few discussions going on about the Mask requirement for attending the event. It has started a Lively debate about it. My question is Would you attend a Convention if you where required to wear a mask?
If you would like to respond with your reasons
I made this a extra long poll just to get some good data.
PS. I am pro mask but against requiring masks now.

  5. Anime Track at #Penguicon last weekend (I'm track head):
Seasonal Anime BoF- 30+ people attended. We said "only recommend 1 show, why someone would enjoy it, you're limited to 2 minutes." Everyone got a chance to talk, no negative comments.
Anime That's Better Than You'd Expect- Trust Us!- Anime with off-putting titles, like "I want to eat your pancreas"
Anime On the Spectrum - Positive autism representation, I co-presented with the head of the Diversity track.
Anime Pets and Animal Companions- cute.
De-stress with Iyashikei - Healing Anime- most attendees were unfamiliar with this, lots of interest.

    Overall, success!

  6. This weekend we hit both AND ! Thanks to the attendees at both events for making us feel so welcome, and for the great conversations.

And thanks to everyone who attended our talks! Both @jonathanspw and @benny hope they were helpful to you.

  7. I accomplished a goal this weekend that I've had in my sights for five years now by presenting my #Sprout24 homebrew CPU at #Penguicon 2024. It went really well, and the geeky conversations that followed were just delightful.

One thing that everyone agreed on is that you can never have too many blinkenlights.

  14. I took a little break to play with #GlobalTalk, but there's progress and good news on the CPU development front too.

I can confirm that the two revised boards I ordered for the control unit and register file are working exactly as I hoped.

That means that conditional jumps and register writebacks are all working correctly now as far as I've been able to test.

Plus, I rewrote the main loop of the emulator to simplify it, and that's making comparing the states of the emulated and hardware CPUs a lot more straightforward to follow.

The only issue I'm still seeing is that the Carry and Sign flags seem to get set wrong in some limited situations, and I've isolated some test cases to help track those down. It seems to have something with how that flag logic takes the invert bit to the ALU into account.

I've got a little more than a month to file down the remaining rough edges, write some more demo programs, and finish putting my presentation together for #Penguicon. But I'm feeling optimistic! :)

Will we see you at any of these events?

  20. Oh, cool, I just got word that my program submission for #Penguicon was accepted! So it looks like I'll be doing a bit of an Intro to CS and showing off the #Sprout24 CPU on Friday, April 26th. 🌱

If you're near southeast Michigan, come on out and say hi! Registrations for my favorite open source nerdy hackerfest weekend are open now at penguicon.org 🐧

  25. ICYMI, @benny gets to name 's primary auditorium. :eyes:

There are a lot of excellent suggestions, but it's time to pick one! Besides everyone's favorite, Roomy McRoomface, which of these options do you like? almalinux.discourse.group/t/au

  26. @negativeprimes
There are a lot of ways something can be trash: one of them I'm currently interested in are series where the premise is stupid but the show turns out to be something you can't stop watching. Uma Musume for instance. Or Kemono Friends, which has intentionally bad cgi as a bonus.
I'm planning a panel on that for #Penguicon this spring, so I'll need to watch more trashy shows and persuade people to be on the panel.

  27. @vincentspitale Whenever I see pictures posted of conventions or the audience for a talk, I play a little "Where's Waldo" of masks.

... there's rarely even one person.

At this point I suspect most of us who are still masking just aren't going to large maskless events anymore. The only convention I'll be going to this year is #Penguicon because they require masks.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  28. Hi Blorbo!
I'm Paul. A couple of you know me from urusai.social.
Long-time anime fan, I watch both classic and new stuff, though not a lot of shonen. Also read manga and light novels. #Precure superfan.
I have a couple stories published, and I'm working on a couple light-novel-style stories, but a long commute makes for slow progress.
I'm #anime track head for #Penguicon, and will be on the ConCom next year too! It's a unique pan-geeky con in S.E. Michigan.

  29. Back from #penguicon.

Time for shower, jammies, and The Amazing Maurice.

  30. Today at #Penguicon:

Talking Rat Operated Vehicles, OpenBSD filesystems, crowdfunding, and more.

  31. The readings at #Penguicon are taking place in the Portage Auditorium.

The Portage Auditorium bears a lot of resemblance to the auditorium where someone dies in "$ git sync murder."

Mind you, the con in $GSM does to take place at this hotel, and that con is decidedly NOT Penguicon.

    Still... should I be worried?
