Economic rents differ from shelter rents, the checks many of us write on the first of the month. Economic rent is what landlords claim from the ownership of land, the proceeds of the work performed on that land. A residential tenant’s wages are the crop harvested each month, as they represent the labor that tenant sells in the market. It’s economic rent and the related term rentier — defined as “[a]n individual who receives an income, usually interest, rent, dividends, capital gains, or profits from his or her assets and investments” — that we are concerned with here.

The Perceived Inevitability of Gentrification
This hit home with me, the idea that gentrification and displacement are somehow inevitable, as relentless and predictable as the tides when we know they are manmade, completely artificial and preventable.

Just another town where the land values are so high — the revenue rentiers can extract from them so lucrative — that working people, the ones who make the town go, are left out in the tiresome game of musical chairs that is the private property market. A desirable location and the recreational benefits that go with it, some historical ties (Hemingway is associated with the town) — none of which was created by the people who hold the land — and all the value gets siphoned out by rentiers and landlords....
