Based on the local data, I think my elevator pitch for a #LandValueTax is gonna be like this, more or less...

Under the current system, most of us pay a little bit too much property tax, to subsidize vacant buildings and empty lots that pay far too little.

The system hasn't totally collapsed because, if you're doing business, paying water and electric and gas bills, paying employees, then property tax isn't your only expense.

I'm back on the grind for a #LandValueTax

I made a little spreadsheet listing samples that people would want to hear about - My lower-middle class neighborhood, a poor Black-majority neighborhood, a couple businesses downtown, and my favorite vacant buildings and car dealerships.

Why do I keep saying that landowners are the ones that should pay higher taxes?

It's because it doesn't make sense to me that land ownership should be respected for "not paying into the system".

Like, if you want to play this silly game that little boys play of territorialism in elementary school playgrounds, where they draw imaginary boundaries, then by all means do so.

But for people who didn't consent to it, you gotta have a good reason why the respect for imaginary boundaries should be enforced.

To make it really easy: don't tax improvements; just land ownership.

The Reddit comments regarding the following post are calling out how it is absolutely fair that BC assessment has reclassified Big Bang Cider's land use as "light industrial", but I don't think land use should be taxed more.

Just land occupation should be taxed, and nothing else.

(Of course, I'm probably the "anti-tax (except land)" equivalent of marxists: I'm probably missing nuance.)

Cities covering the cost of social services is being labeled as “bad news.”

That label is doing a lot of ideological work.

In reality, this may be the beginning of a long-overdue shift: moving the cost of running a city away from workers, and toward those who own the land.

This shift is good news, not bad news!
