"Letter to #PresidentBiden:
"On Dec. 15 1890, over 135 yers ago, Chief Sitting Bull of the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux was killed while in the custody of the U.S. Cavalry. That incident was not the first and would not be the last violation of the Native American people in our country. There have been many violations of our native peoples during the history of our country, too many to list here.
"To your credit you have tried to make some amends during your administration. You have appointed Native Americans to Cabinet positions, you have apologized for the mistreatment of untold numbers of Native American children forcefuly sent to government-run schools and recently you made a showing at the Tribal National Summitt.
"I am respectfully asking you to to take one more step, a very big step, to commute his sentence of Leonard Peltier, an American Indian movement leader who has been in federal prison since the 1970s, and pardon him. Peltier has been in Federal detention for too long and needs to be released, allowed to return to his family and the reservation of his choosing. Although these are different situations, If South African reconciliation meant the release of Nelson Mandela, then perhaps reconciliation for Native Americans should involve the release of Leonard Peltier."
