»The origins of the exact dimensions of Letter size paper are lost in tradition and not well documented. The American Forest and Paper Association argues that the dimension originates from the days of manual papermaking and that the 11-inch length of the page is about a quarter of "the average maximum stretch of an experienced vatman's arms."« 🤡

TIL printers scale down your documents to fit their "printable area" and how it scales depends entirely on the printer.
also, for some reason, pdf viewers and LibreOffice Writer don't actually show the 210x297mm for A4 paper on screen at 100% zoom. they scale down everything by ~1.16x on screen. yes, even the 1cm on the on-screen rulers aren't actually 1cm at 100% zoom. i am too tired to look into that rn.
been banging my head to get the measurements right for this custom page size and it seems that the fault is not on my end.

But wait, why a 1m² area as standard? Why not a 1m width: 1000×1414 mm?
Sounds nice: same 1:√2 shape as in "A", only slightly larger.
Let's call that standard "B" then, which makes a B4 250×353 mm, slightly larger than an A4.

Papersize, how often do you really think about that? Why does that ubiquitous A4 paper have that specific name and size anyway? 210×297 mm seems pretty random.
Well, it isn't. Far from it.
America uses its own collection of random paper sizes, but the rest of us use the very clever and elegant ISO 216 standard.
It starts with a bit of math.
