  1. Straight To Video presents Nightmare At Noon (1988)

    LAB111, Friday, June 19 at 09:00 PM GMT+2

STRAIGHT TO VIDEO PRESENTS NIGHTMARE AT NOON (1988)

Curators Lieuwe and Levente bring you the ultimate cult night every month with Straight to Video presents... Prepare for a wild cult film from the VHS era, filled with mind-boggling moments, rubbery rarities, and deranged dialogue.

This June: what happens when a government experiment poisons the water supply of a sleepy desert town? In Nightmare at Noon, the locals turn into green-bleeding homicidal maniacs, leaving sheriff George Kennedy, fired cop Bo Hopkins, and an utterly unhinged Wings Hauser to fight back against the madness. Directed by Greek exploitation legend Nico Mastorakis, this gloriously chaotic B-movie throws zombies, conspiracies, flamethrowers, motorcycle stunts, and endless exploding cars into one delirious package.

Part sci-fi paranoia thriller, part action movie, part zombie mayhem, Nightmare at Noon constantly escalates into increasingly absurd territory, including an overly long helicopter battle. Featuring manic villainy from Brion James and enough pyrotechnics for three movies, this cult oddity is exactly the kind of loud, messy, wildly entertaining VHS-era insanity that Straight to Video was made for.

  2. Straight To Video presents Massacre In Dinosaur Valley (1985)

    LAB111, Friday, May 29 at 09:00 PM GMT+2

STRAIGHT TO VIDEO PRESENTS MASSACRE IN DINOSAUR VALLEY (1985)

Curators Lieuwe and Levente bring you the ultimate cult night every month with Straight to Video presents... Prepare for a wild cult film from the VHS era, filled with mind-boggling moments, rubbery rarities, and deranged dialogue.

Do you like movies? Aren’t you annoyed that it takes around 2 hours to finish one before you can dwell into another story? What if I tell you that a single movie exists that features all the possible genres you can think of in just under 90 minutes? Allow Straight to Video to present you Massacre at Dinosaur Valley!*

Director Michele Massimo Tarantini was mainly known for his Italian sexploitation and poliziesco entries before he headed to the Amazonas to shoot his magnum opus. As a relatively late, 1985 addition to the Italian ’80s jungle and cannibal movie craze, Tarantini turned the disturbing violence somewhat down to replace it with cheap eroticism and the signature narrative nonsense which is the defining feature of Italosploitation.

Our ragtag group of adventurers, consisting of a dinosaur bone hunter, an old professor, his daughter, a bunch of suspiciously underdressed “fashion models” and a ‘Nam vet with both PTSD and a spiteful wife head deep into the jungle to do what again...? Eh, does it really matter? All you need to know is that after the most charming toy plane crash they will find themselves facing a brand new life threatening challenge every 3 minutes. Come and see for yourself who will survive to fly away to the sunset with the treasure of the Amazonas at the end!

*Disclaimer: Dinosaurs may not be included in the admission price.

  3. Film Lecture: Marilyn Monroe – Zoveel Meer Dan Een Dom Blondje

    LAB111, Monday, June 1 at 07:30 PM GMT+2

    FILM LECTURE:

Please note that this lecture will be presented in Dutch. Tickets for the 20:30 screening of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are sold separately.

Radu Jude Everybody in Our Family 2012

Radu Jude’s film Everybody in Our Family follows Marius, a man for whom everything seems to be going wrong. He is divorced and lives alone in a small, cluttered apartment. His five-year-old daughter lives with his ex-wife. When he goes to pick her up for a planned vacation together his ex bluntly informs him that the trip is off because their daughter is not feeling well, something inside him snaps. Consumed by feelings of grief, resentment and injustice, he becomes determined to take his daughter with him, eventually resorting to extreme measures...

The result is a film that takes the form of a psychological disintegration, raising questions about the deep tensions and contradictions within human relationships; particularly within the structure of man, woman, family- what happens when this structure falls apart?

  5. Voorleesmiddag: Prinses Arabella in het museum (+4)

De Nieuwe Liefde, Sunday, June 21 at 01:00 PM GMT+2

    Volwassenen mogen gratis mee.

    Mylo Freeman

De Nieuwe Liefde, Friday, June 5 at 08:30 PM GMT+2

Talk in collaboration with the Holland Festival

By combining storytelling, animation, and music, and featuring the world’s first-ever Inuit throat singing choir, Canadian Inuk artist Tanya Tagaq brings bold and radical visions to life through her sharp voice and words. At De Nieuwe Liefde, you will discover how language and sound can create new forms of (Arctic) Futurisms.

Throughout the evening, you can draw inspiration from Tanya’s improvisational approach and her engagement with themes such as environmentalism, human rights, and post-colonial issues. What happens when you listen beyond the limits of language? And how can voice and imagination help you envision new futures?

  7. An Exploration of Language and Sound

De Nieuwe Liefde, Sunday, April 19 at 01:30 PM GMT+2

Workshop series in collaboration with the Holland Festival

What happens when language moves beyond definition? When words turn into sound? When a voice does not only tell, but sings, breathes, breaks, and resonates?

Holland Festival and De Nieuwe Liefde are collaborating on the workshop series An Exploration of Language and Sound, in which we investigate the power of storytelling, voice, music, and experimentation across three sessions. Guided by experienced guest artists and performers, participants are invited to discover their own voice and artistic style. How can language break free from constraints? How can sound carry a story when words fall short? And how can personal stories connect to urgent social questions?

Together, we will explore the voice as an instrument, language as constantly evolving medium, and listening as an active and creative practice. Through collective listening, writing exercises, and vocal experimentation, participants will be encouraged to step beyond familiar forms and discover new modes of expression.

The workshop series will take place at De Nieuwe Liefde, a space devoted to language, literature, and social reflection. Your workshop host will be poet, writer and programme curator Dean Bowen.

The workshops will be conducted in English.

    Guest artists

Karima El Fillali – April 19

Karima El Fillali (1987) grew up between Dutch and Moroccan cultures, shaped by music and spirituality. Her mother introduced her to singing and baroque church music, while her father shared Islam and Moroccan recordings, through which she discovered Oum Kalthoum.

Drawn to her heritage, she traveled to Morocco to study Arabic and immerse herself in traditions like gnawa and classical singing. Under a Sufi master, she dedicated herself to tarab, music that evokes deep emotional and spiritual states. Back in the Netherlands, she became known for her interpretations of Oum Kalthoum as well as experimental work blending African, European, and Middle Eastern influences. She has collaborated with Oumou Sangaré and Mahmoud Guinia, and received an Award of Honor from Morocco’s Minister of Culture.

    Jorgen Gario | UNOM – May 17

Jörgen Gario, also known as UNOM, is an Antillean poet born on Sint Maarten, writing in Dutch, English, and Papiamentu. His artistic journey began in 2006 with a spoken word workshop at Poetry Circle Nowhere, where he later became a coach mentoring emerging talent.

Blending poetry with music, he incorporates guitar, ukulele, and electronic production into performances rooted in reggae and dancehall. His work explores identity, expression, and freedom, marked by an energetic stage presence and reflective lyrics.

Gario’s poetry has been featured in major Dutch publications, including Hardop – Spoken Word in Nederland. Over nearly two decades, he has performed extensively across the Netherlands and internationally, building a reputation as a dynamic and boundary-pushing spoken word artist.

    Tanya Tagaq – June 5

Tanya Tagaq (1975) is a Canadian throat singer of Inuit and European descent whose work draws deeply on her cultural heritage. She revitalizes traditional Inuit throat singing by blending it with genres such as jazz, punk, electronic, and classical music.

While studying visual arts in Halifax, she developed her distinctive style. Her international breakthrough came through a collaboration with Björk on the album Medúlla (2004). Her debut album Sinaa (2005) won a Canadian Aboriginal Music Award, and she later collaborated extensively with the Kronos Quartet.

Tagaq has received widespread acclaim for her albums and film work, including the Polaris Music Prize for Animism (2014) and a Juno Award in 2015.
