I'm going to be THAT GUY oh please don't hate me but- oh fudge. Stop preambling, me. So- the grey guys with the pink noses are opossums, and "possums" are smaller and brown and live in Australia and I was TOLD by someone that there's some racist history behind the American "dialect" of shortening names like "opossum" and "racoon" - and I don't believe anyone in my FAMILY even thought about it at all - it's just - shorthand, right? Or a begrudgingly affectionate nickname. But apparently shortening the names made me sound like a bigoted country hick and I felt SO STUPID so now that's why I am THAT GUY when people call opossums possums because I'm not certain but I think "educating people" helps??? (Like IS this actually even a thing or was this person just slowly, maliciously undermining my sense of integrity? Because that is very possible.) So anyway now I've done my duty and will see myself out 🥴.
Afaik there is no Australian name-equivalent of a raccoon. So maybe it was associated guilt in THEIR head… 🤷♀️

Surprised to see an opossum chase away a fox! The opossum was foraging for peanuts in the grass under the tree, and the fox came along. Apparently, the opossum wanted the fox gone.
(The floodlights in the backyard were replaced with red bulbs, so I could see the creatures and they wouldn’t mind the red light.)
