  1. 100-Year-Old Way to Filter #Rainwater in a Barrel

    by Linda Holliday
    February 25, 2015

"During our boiling, broiling, blistering summer of 2012 here in the Missouri Ozarks, water was a topic of conversation wherever we went. Creeks and ponds dried up (some never recovered) and the water table dropped, forcing a few neighbors to have their well pumps lowered or to even have deeper wells drilled.

"Many folks shared memories of rain barrels, cisterns, hand pumps and drawing water with a well bucket as a child, usually on grandpa and grandma’s farm. Some said they’d never want to rely again on those old-time methods of getting water. But, at least they knew how it was done.

"It seems we have lost much practical knowledge in the last 50 or so years because we thought we’d never need it again. Now we are scrambling to relearn those simple know-hows.

"A tattered, 4-inch thick, 1909 book I happily secured for $8 in a thrift store reveals, among umpteen-thousand other every-day skills, how to make homemade water filters. The instructions in 'Household Discoveries and Mrs. Curtis’s Cookbook' are quite basic as everyone had a rain barrel back then and presumably knew how to clean the water. Now, 104 years later, I am thankful the authors had the foresight to preserve their knowledge for us, and pointed out that rainwater collected in barrels from a roof is a necessity in some locations, but also is best for laundry and 'often more wholesome for drinking purposes than hard water.' "

  17. #EdwardianFarm - Extracting Lanolin from Sheep's Wool

"In this clip from Edwardian Farm, Ruth Goodman extracts lanolin from sheep's wool.

Lanolin, also called wool wax or wool grease, is a yellow waxy substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals. Most lanolin used by humans comes from domestic sheep breeds that are raised specifically for their wool. Lanolin primarily consists of sterol esters. Its waterproofing property aids sheep in shedding water from their coats. Certain breeds of sheep produce large amounts of lanolin.

Lanolin and its many derivatives are used extensively in products designed for the protection, treatment and beautification of human skin.

Crude lanolin constitutes about 5–25% of the weight of freshly shorn wool. The wool from one Merino sheep will produce about 250–300 ml of recoverable wool grease. Lanolin is extracted by washing the wool in hot water with a special wool scouring detergent to remove dirt, wool grease (crude lanolin), suint (sweat salts), and anything else stuck to the wool. The wool grease is continuously removed during this washing process by centrifugal separators, which concentrate it into a wax-like substance melting at approximately 38 °C (100 °F)."

Here’s my local stone circle at Stanton Drew (in Somerset).
There are 3 circles + other features that combine to make it the 3rd largest complex of standing stones in England.
In the garden of the village pub - the Druid’s Arms - is a collapsed burial chamber that predates the stone circles.

  21. So, #wool and #lanolin (extracted from raw wool) are made without harming #sheep! In fact, a good shearing can help sheep beat the summer heat! I'll be posting about some of the uses of lanolin in future posts.

How to Extract Lanolin from Sheep's Wool

    Last Updated: September 16, 2021

"Sheep's wool contains lanolin as a form of protection against nature and insects. Human use of lanolin is as old as the use of wool. Extracting it is easy to do at home and is a great way to get lanolin that is pure, free of industrial chemicals and ready for use in homemade products."

from the blog- re: Baltic goddess Ragana:
"Of course ... authority based on intimidation and ignorance drove the old ways to the wilds, outside civilised village and city life. Of course they labelled these women as dangerous or deranged- for the simple truths they lived were indeed dangerous to the repressive patriarchy..."

The way we behave politically, socially, economically and ecologically isn't working, says community organizer and activist Tai Simpson. Sharing the creation myth of her Nez Perce tribe, she advocates for a return to the "old ways" guided by Indigenous wisdom that emphasize balance, community and the importance of intergenerational storytelling in order to protect what's sacred.

  33. 2/ I found in Latvia and Lithuania, the owl is associated with #Ragana an ancient goddess, predating the Indo-European pantheon, later diminished to a negative caricature of 'witch' starting with the patriarchal Indo-Europeans and worse yet, the Christian Church.
I've known of her before, and of course knew to discard all the negative nonsense- the #OldWays and #WomensKnowledge were always turned to evil and demonism by those whom it seemed to threaten!
