@jpostma please share you experiences if you try something out!
I wanted to constantly feed #ODB2 data from my car to a phone app connected via Bluetooth (and then via MQTT to #HomeAssistant). Yes, I'm fine having it work only when the phone is connected to the car. However, I couldn't figure out the right pair of the ODB2 dongle and the ODB2 profile in this app for my car:

I use Home Assistant Cloud, but any VPN would do when on the go.

When I got my #NM drivers' license I had to get a NM #auto #insurance policy and of course that means #Progressive insisted I sign back up for "#Snapshot", their #app or #ODB2 dongle that measures your #driving. Honestly I'm not worried about any of the privacy implications of that. I already drive like an old grandmother and if that means I get a #discount on my insurance #premiums then great!
But here's the thing though. I got my #policy in November. It's December 16th, and I'm in my truck every single day running errands and shit.
And the Snapshot app ... their Snapshot app ... has only recorded 3 trips in total. Out of maybe 50 or more since I re-activated the Snapshot thing.
I don't know whether to be happy or nervous. Haha.
The good news is driving a #diesel #Ford #F250 there's no way I'm flooring it to take off or slamming on my breaks suddenly. (I do have a turbo so I could if I really wanted to. I was able to go from 0-85mph in less than 1/4 mile once which for a 7500lb truck ain't half bad.
And here in Albuquerque, unless I'm on the Interstate the speed limit is pretty much 35mph throughout most of the city. -

I found a car bus interface and Android OBD-II Reader in F-Droid from 2015 but they've not been updated... I also found AndrOBD, which is pretty recent.
Does anyone know anything about using OBD2 adaptors or these programs? Is there something better I could put on a laptop? I want to keep things as libre or open source as I can.
Side rant: my bicycle is so much easier and arguably better than all this mess in exchange for a little effort. Just sad that I live in a place where a car is a requirement.

My best friends father gave me the idea to implement #kit from #knightrider into my #car. He didn't have in mind that I am currently experimenting with #gpt3 ... I think that is a doable thing. I could also feed some #odb2 and additional sensor data in :thonking: .
That could be pretty fun.

Got Torque Pro ODB2 gauges to display on my Android Auto on dashboard but why does Google ban gauge apps on AA if a car has gauges already?
My new Hyundai Grand i10 Fluid does have a multifunction display unit with Android Auto but its unit does not display the car gauges (just shows digital read outs under speedometer). Sad thing is Google apparently banned any 3rd party apps with 'animation' from working with Android Auto (why if cars already have gauges?).
So the first set was to get the OBD2 for AA app which works with AA and Torque Pro, and follow the instructions to get it operational on my rooted phone.
Once done I now have the ODB2AA app appearing on Android Auto and tapping it will show up to 6 ODB2 gauges on the car's head unit. A pity that the app does not show the more detailed bar graphs and other visual displays in Torque Pro but it's a useful hack to at least keep an eye on some essential stats without needing to watch my phone. It can however access all the advanced ODB2 stats.
