ADAM FREELAND - Tectonics

Man, remember when a single DJ mix CD could create a whole new sub-genre scene? Good times...

PAUL OAKENFOLD - Swordfish: The Album
https://emcritic.blogspot.com/2015/12/paul-oakenfold-swordfish-album-original.html
Ah, the good ol' days when rubbish movies still had kick-ass soundtracks tied to them. Or at least, kick-ass 'electronica' soundtracks tied to them.

STANTON WARRIORS - The Stanton Session
https://emcritic.blogspot.com/2015/10/stanton-warriors-stanton-session.html
Chaps are still plugging along, so good for them. Not much out of the production front, but when you can carry on the DJ circuit based on your history, why force it?

BT - R & R: Rare & Remixed
https://emcritic.blogspot.com/2015/09/bt-r-r-rare-remixed.html
I honestly believe this is about as definitive of classic BT music (re: pre-Pop era) as you'll ever find. Yes, even better than an official Best Of collection.

HARDFLOOR - So What?!
Having gotten their retro nostalgia bugs out of their system, the lads come back with a (then) contemporary take on #Techno and #Breaks. Ooh, since this is Year 2000, you know what that means.
Techno? Stripped, bangin', with touches of glitch - perfect for Vath's Cocoon nights and not much else. Breaks? Oh, it's definitely #NuSkool, of a sort. #Acid? Some tracks have it, others don't.
Oddly, in sounding *so* 2000, it kinda' dates this album more than the #AcidHouse LP.

TIPPER - Broken Soul Jamboree
Tipper's sonic tricks are starting to sound a little stock, so I'm glad he took another step outside his usual #NuSkool #Breaks and #GlitchHop sound here. I guess Dave wanted some of that Real Musician cred' too, what with all the Real Instruments from across the globe used in this album.
When I see 'Jamboree' in the title tho', I expect something more jubilant than this. Music's fine, in a #Downtempo Shpongle sort of way, but comes off Very Self-Serious overall.

TIPPER - Tertiary Noise
Something I didn't realize: this and 'Wobble Factor' both have standard albums and a DJ mix of them. Not sure if listening to 'Wobble' on a track-to-track basis would have improved it much, but seeing as how both sets are some 25 minutes shorter than the LP versions, figured I'd give this one the full-length go-around.
And yeah, it's very tracky, Tipper going back to #NuSkool #Breaks with his usual assortment of wiggly-squiggly sound effects. There was a #Dubstep, tho'.

TIPPER - Relish The Trough
Huh, I guess #NuSkool wasn't as dead as I thought. Sure, its end was nigh, but Dave ain't letting the #Breaks scene go down without some fight.
Funny enough, this feels older-school than NuSkool, not quite the bass-heavy tear-out style that would come to dominate the genre. More like the transitional period between it and #ChemicalBreaks before it. The bouncy #BreakBeat, the skippity effects and basslines, the touches of #acid... OMG! This is an Überzone album!

TIPPER - Tip Hop
#NuSkool was suffocating on its own self-seriousness. Doing an #Audiophile album only appealed to a select few. What's next for Dave, then? How about just having a good ol' time, eh?
Yeah, something must of made Tipper all happy, as this is one rollickin' fun time, a vintage #Turntablist throwdown, but done digitally. In fact, I wonder...
Did this transition #GlitchHop from stuffy #IDM experiments to the festival bangers we hear now? If not *the* first, then one of the first?
-
TIPPER - Surrounded
Well this is a surprise, but also not? I'm sure folks in the #Breaks scene were caught off guard by Dave doing a completely #Downtempo album, and good on him bucking convention. I'm sure he was feeling #NuSkool was getting stale as the #00s rolled on (because it was).
So going full #TripHop is an interesting wrinkle, sprinkling just enough #Glitch and #IDM touches that I'm sure wow'd purist breakbeat boys. Some of those drippy sounds tho', remind me of #PsyTrance wibble.

NEW SURVEY START!
TIPPER - Holding Pattern
Skipping the first album, since I've done a review of it. Plus, it ain't available on streaming, so...
We're definitely in peak #NuSkool #Breaks era with this. Not as adventurous as his debut, but that's a good thing. I found Dave at times over-reached with his #Glitch and #IDM indulgences before, whereas here they're much more restrained and subtle. Finely produced for efficiency rather than showing off.
Also, does that closer ever go BoC-like.
