Why? Was Constantinople such a terrible place that it single-handedly kept Europe in a grip of feudalistic misery?

Because the vehicle by which Constantinople became the birthing pang of Renaissance, of rebirth, was Migrants.
Migrants from Constantinople travelled to those dark feudal european lands, bringing with them arab-preserved knowledge.
Migrants, doing what they always do, bringing new ways of thinking.
