  1. Your Reminder Danielle Smith's Separation Referendum is a Sham

Over $100 M expected to be spent over the entire “Referendum”, Albertans wonder why the UCP and the Premier cannot answer a simple question about what is the point of this exercise? How do we even get a result?

Yes, the Alberta Separation “Referendum” is a sham. Danielle Smith lets the cat out the box/bag, revealing there is no threshold at all when it comes to these citizen petitions. Alberta Separation is whatever we want it to be. Well, in that case, Smith and the UCP may have intended to foist the Alberta Separatists as a scapegoat. In a grotesque nod to the legendary dystopian novel of 1984, Canadians are left to engage in a two minutes of hate on this sacrificial and hopeless scapegoat of separation.

As Former PM Harper already pointed out, for argument’s sake, there’s no one capable of even operating a country such as Alberta if separation was to even happen. Yet, we’re all forced to engage because even neglecting to do so has such terrible implications. No one is able to even set this sham aside as the circus it is.

So Danielle Smith really is foisting a box in front of all of us, but the problem is she doesn’t want to acknowledge what’s in the box. Is it Alberta Separation? Is it the Separatists themselves, served up neatly for the public to just hate on collectively? We just have to wait until Christmas to peek in the box, children.

    ...

We’re wasting money and time, all to cover up from the UCP’s Corrupt Care scandals, and resulting Ethical failures.

But worse, the UCP expanded the role of the Justice Minister, and interfered with how the Law Society of Alberta manages the profession by making the Minister immune to any sanctions. Alberta paid a heavy price to even have this “petition”, and it’s incredibly bizarre to call it a “referendum”.

  2. Your Reminder Danielle Smith's Separation Referendum is a Sham

Smith was pressed on why Albertans are not being given a clear definition of what the government considers a strong mandate before they cast their ballots.

“I think people know that I want these nine [proposals] to get an endorsement,” she said. “I don’t want to prejudge the outcome, but I’ve made it pretty clear that I would like to proceed on these nine issues.

“We heard about it through the Alberta Next Panel, but I want to hear from Albertans to make sure that they agree that this is the right direction to go.”

Over $100 M expected to be spent over the entire “Referendum”, Albertans wonder why the UCP and the Premier cannot answer a simple question about what is the point of this exercise? How do we even get a result?

In December 2025, Canadians will remember that the CEO for Elections Alberta had already submitted a problem to the courts for an opinion. You see, the Citizen Initiative Act s. 2(4) initially required that petitions not violate the Constitution Act of 1982. And, as you might expect, there was a concern that a petition for Alberta to separate from Canada sounds like it would violate the Constitution Act of 1982.

From the Chief Electoral Officer of Alberta v. Sylvestre, 2025 ABKB 712, Justice Colin Feasby provided a detailed opinion. Essentially, did the Citizen’s Initiative Act petition by Mitch Sylvestre not contravene the Constitution Act 1982 or the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The short of it was the court came back with the answer of yes, the petition does lead to violations of both the Constitution Act, s. 35, and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

What also made the Sylvestre case so remarkable was Danielle Smith and the UCP’s attempt to legislate their solution to this issue by trying to cut out the Judicial Branch of government while the court was still receiving submissions.

[250] Late yesterday afternoon, Alberta wrote to the Court to advise that Bill 14: Justice Statutes Amendment Act, 2025 (“JSAA 2025”) had just been tabled in the Legislative Assembly. JSAA 2025, amongst other things, seeks to amend the CIA to repeal s 2(3) which requires legislative proposals to be within the jurisdiction of the Legislative Assembly, s 2(4) which is the section at issue in the present case, and s 2.1 which gives the CEO the power to state a special case to the Court as was done in the present case. JSAA 2025 s 71.1(3) provides that any existing “special case is discontinued without costs to any party….” Alberta’s letter explains that “once this legislation takes legal effect, this Action will be discontinued.” The legal consequence of discontinuing this proceeding prior to a decision would be to silence the Court. Legislating an end to litigation is extraordinary. Even the Referendum Proponent who stands to benefit from Alberta’s actions wrote to the Court last night expressing concern that “the Legislature is interfering in a duly convened judicial process.”

Justice Feasby went on to say:

[253] Legislating to pre-emptively end this court proceeding disrespects the administration of justice. We are in an age of scarce government resources that is as evident in the court system as it is anywhere. Alberta set up a process pursuant to CIA s 2.1 that conscripted the Court to determine a question of public importance and this case was given priority over the needs of other justice system participants. Only after the parties, intervenors, and the Court invested many days inside and outside of the courtroom to bring this case to an expeditious conclusion, did Alberta decide to change the law. Alberta’s cavalier disregard for court resources and lack of consideration for the parties and First Nations intervenors who participated in this proceeding in good faith is disappointing to say the least.

[254] Contrary to the pending JSAA 2025 s 71.1(3), this case cannot be discontinued, and the Court cannot be silenced because the case has been decided. These reasons are delivered despite the anticipated change to the law because reason giving is democratic. This case concerned a matter of importance to the public and these reasons are the product of the significant investment of the diverse group of stakeholders who participated in this proceeding. The public is entitled to the fruits of this process that has been conducted largely at their expense so that if they are asked to vote on Alberta independence, they have a tool that may help them make sense of the legal dimensions of the secession of Alberta from Canada.

    https://www.canlii.org/en/ab/abkb/doc/2025/2025abkb712/2025abkb712.html

Bill 14 wasn’t just crazy with its timing - as if getting sanctioned by court to be disrespectful to the administration of justice wasn’t bad enough. Bill 14 also made changes to the Legal Profession Act that made Justice Minister/Attorney General Mickey Amery immune from sanctions from his Law Society of Alberta. You might wonder why? Well Bill 14 also switched the decision-making for which Citizen Petitions proceed from the Elections Alberta CEO to the Justice Minister.

By May 2026, after the UCP and Danielle Smith’s legislative amendments, Elections Alberta returns to the lime light. But, this time, the Justice Minister is in the driver’s seat. In Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation v Alberta 2026 ABKB 375, Elections Alberta was challenged for approving the petition for Alberta independence.

I’d encourage anyone to read the case itself. In summary, the UCP’s legislative amendments were not interpreted to mean that unconstitutional questions were permitted to proceed to a referendum. Also, Justice Shaina Leonard found that the Elections Alberta CEO remained obliged to consider the Sylvestre decision that the first proposed petition would have violated s. 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. Lastly, Justice Leonard submitted that the petition triggered the Province’s Duty to Consult with affected First Nations.

  3. Elections Alberta notifies thousands of referendum voters about invalid mail-in ballot packs

I just want to add that Elections Alberta, the office responsible for administering the UCP organized “referendum” of 2026, also happens to be underfunded and visibly disarmed. Whether the office functions to expectation or not, I would suggest that this visible erosion of an office responsible for safeguarding Alberta democracy leaves Elections Alberta vulnerable to becoming a patsy. Separatists, including Mitch Sylvestre, already have suggested that they have no confidence in Elections Alberta despite Separatist efforts to steal electoral data for Information Operations.

I’ve already asked to myself at what point should Mr McClure consider resignation? Since May 2025, Justice Minister Mickey Amery already rigged the rules to defang Elections Alberta. From the Globe’s Tom Cardoso and Carrie Tait, in “A watchdog curtailed":

In May, 2025, Mr. Amery pushed through a series of amendments he said would “strengthen public trust” in the integrity of the province’s elections. Among the changes, Elections Alberta now has a one-year deadline to pursue sanctions arising from political finance complaints, instead of three.

At the time, Elections Alberta was investigating Mr. Mraiche after receiving a complaint the Edmonton businessman had allegedly made illegal donations to the province’s United Conservative Party and New Democratic Party. Mr. Mraiche denies the allegations.

When the bill became law, it had been more than a year since Elections Alberta had launched its investigation into Mr. Mraiche – raising questions about whether the authority’s window to sanction him had closed. In response to questions from The Globe about the status of the probe, Elections Alberta said it was prohibited by law from commenting on its investigations.

The legislative change raises further questions about Mr. Amery’s potential conflicts of interest given his relationship with Mr. Mraiche, who is at the centre of a health procurement controversy in the province. The government’s dealings with Mr. Mraiche and his company, MHCare Medical Corp., have prompted investigations, including by the RCMP.

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-alberta-justice-minister-sam-mraiche-investigation/

Now in October 2026, on the run up to the UCP and Danielle Smith’s Referendum, Canadians are reminded that Elections Alberta still cannot pursue penalties realistically within the time limits set by a Justice Minister who has Ethical complications of his own.

Some observers have pointed to repeated warnings from Elections Alberta – an arm’s-length government agency – that it is underfunded and understaffed.

In its annual report, published in November, 2025, chief electoral officer Gordon McClure referenced “systemic deficiencies” at the agency, including high staff turnover, insufficient resources and a “lack of backup in critical positions and areas.”

That report was published roughly three months before Ms. Smith unveiled her plans for the October referendum. In May, Mr. McClure told a legislative committee that he’s “drinking from a firehose.”

    …

The errors add to a list of problems that have plagued the mail-in voting process, just one component of a referendum that Elections Alberta says is one of the biggest electoral events in Canadian history.

The referendum centres around 10 questions – all designed by Premier Danielle Smith’s government – asking voters to weigh in on provincial separation, immigration and constitutional issues.

    …

The agency has been proactively responding on social media to voters who were notified that they need to send in more documentation.

Elections Alberta has been forced to address a crop of issues in the lead up to the referendum. Some of the first declaration forms sent to electors, for example, incorrectly included a section asking voters to testify that they’re unable to vote in person. Alberta voters were previously prohibited from voting by mail unless they could prove they were unable to.

Elections Alberta also found 313 mail-in packages sent to electors that were missing ballots.

  4. Elephant in the room

The Globe’s Carrie Tait, Grant Robertson, and Nathan Vanderklippe, bring us a deep dive into the infamous Centurion Project. Albertans know this as David Parker’s operation which resulted in the theft of detailed private identifying data of over 2 million Albertans that came to light in May 2026. Canadians were rocked at essentially one of the most severe data breaches in the country’s history, carried out by separatists who engaged in alleged meetings with US government officials to discuss Canadian resources - among other things.

Parker’s separatist motives are clear enough. But, his use of this American 10X Votes software is an Information Operation to data mine the personal identifying data of Canadians to manipulate public sentiment and generate what looks to be probable US affiliated propaganda within Canada.

Canadians have already seen these types of Information Operations thanks to Cambridge Analytica and Facebook/Meta. We’re being subjected to more invasive thefts of data carried out by these home grown operators, such as Parker. In turn, the data is explicitly used for surveillance, seeking out Canadians with mixed views who otherwise would be left to make decisions for themselves. Parker’s surveillance system hopes to forcefully turn these people over to a desired message.

Truly, I suspect with many that the Centurion Project breach is a remarkable violation of Canadian privacy, and the motives behind such brazen theft include Alberta separation.

Thanks to this deep dive, Canadians learn more of characters like Jeff Rath, a lawyer accused of withholding trust funds from his First Nations clients, and leveraging litigation carried out by his law office to litigation speculation companies in the US. A lawyer is basically letting people gamble and speculate on his own private files. But perhaps he’s only consistent when Rath allegedly goes to the US to discuss the hand off of Canadians, and land, that do not belong to him.

David Parker, an organizer for Alberta separation, brokered the meeting and championed the software. Known as 10X Votes, it mines voter lists to identify communities of like-minded people that could be mobilized to potentially swing elections.

“I was blown away by what this can do,” Mr. Parker told a separatist meeting in Edmonton in April, according to video footage of the presentation, where he demonstrated a version adapted for use in Alberta.

    …

At the same time, Alberta sovereignty has become a talking point for senior American leaders and influential conservative voices, giving legitimacy to a separatist cause that might otherwise have been a fringe provincial movement.

Among those U.S. voices are Drew Born and Drew Wierda, the Michigan-based founders of 10X Votes, whose families are well-known Republican royalty.

Mr. Wierda was one of the representatives in the meeting in Calgary, according to Mr. Hartzler, who identified him from a photograph. Meanwhile, Mr. Born, who hails from an influential and wealthy family of Republican donors, has openly called for the U.S. annexation of Alberta.

“I pray daily this happens,” Mr. Born wrote on social media in August, regarding Alberta separating from Canada.

    “Me too,” Mr. Parker responded.

    …

An independent Alberta could even offer fresh water to the U.S., Dennis Modry, a former Alberta heart surgeon who is co-founder of the Alberta Prosperity Project, said in an interview.

“We just brought up water as a possible issue. Does the U.S. need more water? Can Alberta provide some more water to them?” said Dr. Modry.

Some of the ideas were contained in a document that, Dr. Modry said, put into writing “the potential benefits of Alberta sovereignty to the United States of America – and to Alberta.”

That document was delivered to U.S. officials last year. The separatists met with them at the Harry S. Truman building, the headquarters of the State Department, on April 22, Sept. 29 and Dec. 16.

    …

At the same time, Mr. Rath believes the Albertans’ overtures to Washington have won attention at the highest levels of American power. In January, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described a “wealth of natural resources” in Alberta, which he said had been trapped by domestic opposition to a Pacific pipeline.

    …

But Dr. Modry’s proposals suggested numerous other ways to thrust an independent Alberta deep into the sphere of American influence, from the very first days of separation from Canada.

Alberta could seek U.S. help in its transition to become an independent country, Dr. Modry said. That could include a swap line or line of credit to finance the shift.

Converting Albertans’ cash holdings to the U.S. dollar would leave the government of an independent Alberta in further debt.

To make Washington whole, Dr. Modry suggested new oil export pipelines through the U.S., perhaps built with a royalty payable to the U.S. on barrels moved south. Such a deal would upend the traditional structure of petroleum extraction, in which royalties flow to the owner of the resource.

It might also be possible to provide a right of way for a rail line to Alaska, an idea Mr. Trump had endorsed during his first administration that never got off the ground.

“Oil royalties or land access for that rail line – there’s all kinds of different permutations and combinations to repay that debt,” Dr. Modry said.

A White House official declined comment on the meetings. “Administration officials meet with a number of civil society groups,” the official said. “No support or commitments were conveyed.”

    …

One of the key figures behind the Michigan software company has expressed strong views on Alberta.

On July 1, Mr. Born wrote on social media: “On this Canada Day, I hope this is the last year Alberta is part of Canada.” He has also called for U.S. annexation of the province.

A hunter, outdoorsman and commercial real estate agent in Grand Rapids, Mr. Born is the stepson of J.C. Huizenga, a wealthy Republican donor and founder of National Heritage Academies, a network of conservative charter schools in the U.S.

Mr. Wierda is the nephew of Erik Prince, who founded and ran the private military contractor Blackwater before it was sold to investors in 2010, and Betsy DeVos, the education secretary during Mr. Trump’s first term.

    …

The traditional campaign method is time-consuming and, Mr. Sylvestre told The Globe, does not necessarily yield accurate results because some Albertans are afraid to disclose their support for secession on the porch. It also leaves volunteers vulnerable to verbal abuse, he said.

But the meeting made him uncomfortable.

“All somebody had to tell me was they flew in from the U.S. on a private jet to talk to me and our group,” he said. “All the bells are screaming and ringing in my ear. ‘Oh, what’s happening here. Why are you here?’”

At the meeting, the 10X Votes delegation demonstrated how the program works, but Mr. Sylvestre and Mr. Hartzler said they could not answer a key question: How would 10X Votes propagate a database in anticipation of an Alberta referendum on separation?

Both said Mr. Parker proposed using the Alberta Prosperity Project’s list of supporters. The database exploded from about 50,000 names to 250,000 in the 10 days after Mark Carney led the federal Liberal Party to victory in April, 2025, Mr. Sylvestre said.

The meeting ended without a resolution, but Mr. Sylvestre, who had privacy concerns about the software, later told Mr. Parker that the Alberta Prosperity Project’s list was off the table.

“He yelled at me because I wouldn’t commit all of my membership to be on that list of his,” Mr. Sylvestre said of Mr. Parker. “And I said: ‘Not a chance in hell you’re getting my list.’”

“Because I know that this is not right,” Mr. Sylvestre said in an interview. “There’s something really wrong with this.”

    …

During show-and-tell sessions posted online, the Centurion Project organizers revealed home addresses for former premiers Mr. Kenney and Ms. Notley – two politicians despised by ardent separatists – as a way to tout the software’s power.

After identifying people they knew from the database, users filled out a short survey about their acquaintances’ views on separation. They were then responsible for making sure anyone they flagged as pro-independence showed up at the polls on referendum day.

Mr. Parker encouraged separatists to enlist like-minded people to sign up for the Centurion Project, and identify more potential supporters, generating a multiplying effect.

But he was vague about the source of the database in an April text exchange with The Globe.

“It’s a collection of sources. You can rent it off Canada Post, but they were more expensive,” he said, claiming the Centurion Project’s information cost 11 cents per name. “I actually feel like I got a great deal.”

    …

The Globe and Mail, which registered for the Centurion Project using a company e-mail address, discovered a security vulnerability that gave users access to the main directory that the whole system was based on.

It was, according to The Globe’s analysis, the master list of eligible voters for the province – or very close to one.

As The Globe first reported in April, the Centurion Project’s database contained names and addresses for 2,957,857 Albertans, once apparent duplicate entries were removed.

By way of comparison, Elections Alberta’s list of electors tallied 2,966,192 eligible voters across the province in May, 2025, when the head count was last updated.

Further, The Globe found the Centurion Project’s underlying database contained a trove of highly sensitive personal information beyond what casual users could easily access, including middle names, unique electoral identification numbers and 2,083,175 phone numbers.

A middling Alberta premier who has continued the glorious multi-generational march of draining provincial coffers to keep the province from building itself into something decent. American companies and investors have deeply integrated themselves into the Alberta Oil and Gas sector - many of whom are in/directly responsible for dumping unwanted oil wells while taking the profits.

What makes Smith exceptional, would be her near titanic capacity for corruption. From the Corrupt Care scandals, the disarming of the Office of the Ethics Commissioner and Elections Alberta, to an open ended effort to gerrymander electoral boundaries to a province already skewed in favour for arguably 20-25% minority rural voters, Smith continues to push forward shamelessly.

What amazing destination does Smith have left to sell for her best customers? A referendum about referendum, and a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government. She is literally selling Bridges for griefers in Alberta who still somehow imagine that the National Energy Program was some kind of foul play, and are haunted by the images of Trudeau and Carney chasing them through Terabithia.

In order to understand how we got to this con, we have to appreciate the challenges confronting Canada and the world. PM Carney’s Davos speech, the end of the old order speech, was an explicit expression of the understanding that the strategy for doing business in the world had changed. Countries once relied on a global set of rules for trade. There’s less need to diversify an economy broadly for self-reliance when the global system via the US and US currency can open up products and services.

    https://www.weforum.org/stories/2026/01/davos-2026-special-address-by-mark-carney-prime-minister-of-canada/

We the world were happy to fall into this symbiotic arrangement because the US market was expected to remain open, and individual countries could pursue competitive advantages by focusing on certain sectors.

What no one expected in Trump, was the US destroying the very symbiotic arrangement that pulled in the world’s best products, services, and minds. The US imposed tariffs against countries around the world, became antagonistic towards international institutions like the UN and the ICC, and basically destroyed energy and chemical production out of the Strait of Hormuz.

The US has successfully broken the very system that supports its own superpower capabilities and capacity. In the face of such a suicidal, and probably now fascist neighbour, Canada must literally rebuild itself with a war like posture for reliable supply chains. We are talking about re-establishing ties around the US, and repositioning Canada to fill a production void left by the US-Israel-Iran conflict.

We are now in a race. Every deke, and every tactic is to climb at each other to fill this void. Our primary competitors are Russia and the Middle East, and our ball and chain - as it always has been - is the US.

Danielle Smith’s been selling Canadians Bridges to Terabithia, and we’re seeing all of its madness into no where. Depending on who has done the polling, there may be up to 27% of Albertans who claim support for separation. But there’s also a portion of this group that wishes to move towards some kind of fascist monolithic state, tacitly and expressly stated by one of its leaders, Mitch Sylvestre. Even if we give some of the separatist movement the benefit of the doubt, and we remove the racist and fascist portion, we’re still left with a dangerous group that is responsible for the Electoral List Data Leak - one of the worst data leaks in the history of Canada. So whether Alberta remains or leaves Canada, the separatists have done real harm to Albertans. We cannot tell the extent of this harm for probably years to come.

At what point will the rural Albertan voter realize that their power is probably at its maximum in Canada - that this minority group of 20-25% of Albertans are literally holding the other 75% and the Alberta and Canadian economy hostage. This vocal, overpowered Albertan minority is carrying out a violence to the majority of Albertans who don’t want anything to do with separation. When will these rural voters realize that everyone’s been watching them speak to a fence post for the last 6 months.
