Blur - Miss America
My favourite Blur song.

I distinctly remember watching actress and sports broadcaster Jayne Kennedy on the CBS show, The NFL Today. This unflinchingly honest memoir is a compelling read. Miss USA and Miss Teen USA resign days apart, casting a spotlight on the organization
The 2023 Miss USA and Miss Teen USA relinquished their crowns within days of each other this week, leaving their parent organization without its two biggest titleholders — and under mounting scrutiny.https://youtu.be/OpE1de10Bq4?si=4F1vAkE0fqbvm54n

The newest #MissAmerica is a graduate of the Air Force Academy (BS, physics) currently studying poli-sci at Harvard and an active-duty pilot.
I am not positive if she is the first person to hold the title who has been trained in the application of deadly force, but I bet she's the first commissioned officer still on active duty.
Buckaroo Banzai vibes.

Photo of the Day
…would you do this for money?
Norma Smallwood did, and then some.
And that was the problem.
Atlantic City businessmen had started the Miss America pageant five years earlier. They wanted a flashy event in early September to encourage tourists to stay in town past the Labor Day weekend.
It’s always been about the money…

The nuclear industry manges to mine and ship millions of tons of uranium and meticulously care for all the radioactive waste without emitting greenhouse-gases. It's magic!!
They mine and ship millions of tons without using Fossil Fuels I guess. How do they do it? (The answer is probably in that Tom Waits song that uses commercial jingles: "How do we do it! How do we do it! Volume! Volume! turn up the volume! Step Right Up!" )
Maybe the magic of avoiding fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions while mining and transporting millions of tons of dangerous ore makes up for the rivers' worth of water the nuclear plants heat up 7C and send back into local waters, destroying the ecology. Nukes are so delicate, often shut down because of climate: not enough water, or too-warm water for cooling the reactors so they don't explode and require heavy machinery to try and mitigate the disaster. I wonder how much extra greenhouse gas is being emitted while handling radiation from the Fukushima DaiIchi fiasco... Nukes are surprisingly delicate: Even when a plan is providing energy 24/7: there needs to be ingenious ways to deal with the excess night-time electricity. One ingenious way is a pump storage dam which manages to cost more and be worse for the environment than a regular dam. But the pump storage dam does get rid of 30% of that extra night-time electricity...
I guess you have to be Miss America or a titan of industry to see how nukes are good for the environment.
.> The industry may be at a turning point as it comes into the chance of obtaining billions of dollars in federal funding through the climate-focused Inflation Reduction Act, the 2021 infrastructure law and government-backed loans for new projects because of its ability to provide 24-7 power without greenhouse-gas emissions.

Miss American and Elon Musk promote nuclear power. It must be good. (Sarcasm Alert!)
> Titans of industry including Elon Musk, Sam Altman and Oliver Stone have all thrown their support behind nuclear power.Everyone is hoping Musk will buy and run nukes? Ohhh, Elon please by the nuclear power plant closest to my house. Rename it X.
Nukes provide too-cheap-to-meter energy the way AI will lessen work and maintain pay, I guess.

Being a state with only 1,150 Jews can make #Wyoming feel like a lonely corner of the diaspora. But next month, one of the Cowboy State’s Jews will be introduced to the nation as she competes to become the next Miss America. Our profile of Hazel Homer-Wambeam, the first #Jewish Miss Wyoming. https://momentmag.com/jewish-miss-wyoming/?utm_source=mstdn&utm_medium=m
