Had no luck in the Microwave Contest on Sunday, so went out with a mate today to test my 24GHz gear to make sure it still works. 59+10dB both ways over a rain soaked 31km path between Stanage Edge and the Cat & Fiddle. #PeakDistrict #MicrowaveRadio #uWaves #Microwaves #AmateurRadio #AmateurFunk #24GHz

Tonight we gave the #SHF #UKAC a go for the first time this year. Overall, a great success!
A good few QSOs on #13cm (2.3GHz) and our first on #6cm (5.7GHz), which was to the Peak District! A 59 report was received. Not bad for 2w!

So, this LNB is built around a very cool channel stacking ASIC from MaxLinear, the MXL862.
But as there is no public documentation, I cannot control it.
So I had to resort to other measures.

Hey folks in the Nordics, the 2026 Nordic VHF UHF SHF meeting's booking page is now open! It's held on 15.-17.5.2026
Location: Hotel Martinhovi, Raisio, Finland.
Which is like 15minutes from the Turku harbor. This is the meeting for the VHF, UHF and SHF enthusiasts.

Growing efficiencies of near-infrared #lasers make them preferable over #microwaves, allowing the transmission antenna on the spacecraft to be scaled down from hundreds of meters across to about half a meter 📏. #OverviewEnergy successfully tested a system that transmitted “multiple thousands of watts” of power using a near-infrared laser from an aircraft flying at an altitude of 5,000 meters to a receiver on the ground https://spacenews.com/overview-energy-demonstrates-technologies-for-space-solar-power/

My first 122GHz band QSO.
VK3CV transceiver with UV-K5 running fagci spectrum as the IF radio.
QSO was with Michael, OH2AUE. -

I wonder where I have misplaced my Alcatel mmW detector/mixer/multiplier module.
Because now I could measure the output more properly with the HP harmonic mixer I have. -
Stupidity inbound.
The sheer audacity of building and selling a radar based on a regenerative receiver-transmitter while also selling it as a 2.4GHz one while actually operating on 3GHz turned out to be irresistible in the long term.
So now there's ten of 'em. -
Have any of you folks encountered thus type Soviet waveguide relay before?
Looking for:
A pinout for the connector
A datasheet with the specs for driving it
Connector type.
This is X-band based on the waveguide dimensions.#Waveguide #microwaves #amateurradio #radio #Xband #10GHz #surplus

Anyone ever made their own controller for these variable attenuators made by Flann Microwave?

I think this was the best purchase from the Hamkarelia2024 hamfest.
HP/Agilent 11970V harmonic mixer for 50-75GHz, with WR-15 flange.
I hope to use it to potentially see things on 47GHz (iffy) and 76GHz (more likely).100eur. So not free, but a decent price.
There was also a WR-15 noise source, but that was also 100eur and I had no immediate use for one, nor a noise test set. -
Manual waveguide frequency meter.
Just rotate the micrometer until you see a peak on the detector diode being fed to the BNC.
Then read the frequency from the scale. -
Whee, new lab additions.
Might finally dare to power up those X-band amps and see where they operate.
And possibly even the ancient surplus 6GHz TWTA. -
High-energy #laser weapons are designed to #defeat #incoming #drones and missiles by employing a narrow beam of energy to #burn incoming threats out of the sky.
In contrast, high-powered #microwaves create a cone of electromagnetic interference that #disables #electronics across both a wider area and a wider range of target systems, according to the latest Congressional Research Service report on directed-energy weapons. While #lasers provide #point defense against #individual drones,
#microwave weapons are widely considered a more effective #blanket defense across a broader area, making them suited to deal with complex attacks involving #swarms of multiple fast-moving drones. -
Hah. Apparently I'm the #waveguide person these days.
"Hey I have these two large waveguide dummy loads, do you want them?"
And here they are.

I'm a Prof of #computational #physics at the Univ. of #Birmingham. I work in #MaterialsScience. I use #dft on #supercomputers to predict new #materials, like #batteries & #solar. I #code my own #OSS. I teach #quantummechancs and #maths.
My #hamradio callsign is M0CWX. I do #vhf, #uhf and #microwaves / #shf especially #construction & #electronics. I prefer #homebrew to buying #newandshiny.
I like #books, #piano, & #walking. Also #NewDad so I don't actually have any #sparetime!

US #Navy #wirelessly beams 1.6 kW of power a #kilometer using #microwaves
Sadly this is nothing new and the energy loss is too big to make it useful. It has more meaning for weaponizing it. Intercepting signals is also a thing.
