  1. Today's #mushroom

I often take photos of mushrooms, and I think their shapes are very beautiful. However, rather than saying that I like mushrooms, I think it would be more accurate to say that mushrooms like me when describing my relationship with them.

Today, the forecast was for rain, so I had intended to refrain from going out, but the sky was unexpectedly light rain, and I was encouraged to go for a walk. So I found a mushroom on the side of the road.

Thinking that this was the case, I took a photo, and sure enough, then it started raining heavily as expected. They somehow influence my actions in that way. And perhaps yours.

  3. Any thoughts on this gorgeous object? It looks a bit like a dinocyst from the dinoflagellate genus Brigantedinium, but might be too big? My other thought is a flatworm egg of some kind. What do you think?

  4. I’m really not sure about this one. It’s pretty raggedy and beat-up. I’m wondering, could this be foraminifera Procerolagena multilaterata? I need to make friends with a #foram expert to check my #foraminifera IDs! Anyone willing to be my go-to scientist?

  5. I’m still none the wiser about these mysteries. Flatworm eggs? Foraminifera? If you can shed any light on to these beauties, please share your knowledge! There are 2 individuals here. Pic 1 is one fella, and pics 2 and 3 are the other fella (who appears to have a spiky surface).

  6. I’m super excited by this one. I think, I _think_, this is Amphitetras antediluviana, a new-to-me species of diatom from Cromer. I ADORE their cubic form 🎁 (yes more geometry!)

  7. Can anyone shed any light on this little mystery? Too big to be the diatom Cylindrotheca closterium, my second guess is a dinoflagellate (perhaps Amphisolenia sp.?). What do you think? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  8. Barnacles! Yes, this is a barnacle. Difficult to believe I know, but barnacles are actually crustaceans (like crabs and lobsters) and start out just like they do, including this nauplius stage. You can tell it’s a barnacle nauplius due to its horns! It has a few more stages to go through before it settles.

  9. Twisty twisty! This colonial diatom Asterionellopsis glacialis is increasing in my samples. It has been known to bloom around here so it’ll be interesting to see how, when, and if that happens this year.

  10. This was a weird one. So pretty and I’d never seen anything like it! The wonderful @microbe_guru over on insta came to my rescue once more and informed me it is a Radiosperma - a protist. I know nothing about them, so I’m off to read a paper.

  11. This is the first time I’ve seen Thalassiosira eccentrica as a joined pair! Can you see the little thread between them joining them together? It’s the little things that get me excited!

  12. Some round things from my @norwichsciencefestival and @norfolkwt sample. a foraminifera, a copepod egg, and a Gastropod larva. As always, correct me if I’m wrong!

  13. Can anyone help me with this mystery? I find lots of these short chains of diatoms in my samples. Is it a Chaetoceros sp. ? The examples always have these short setae. And if so, which one!!?? This is also my first attempt at stacking. 😬

  14. Oooo, have I found something new (for me)? Looks like a ciliate called a Tintinnid. Not the whole thing, just the lorica, in which the cell lives. I’m thinking Favella sp. What do you think?

  15. This is very cool. Some dinoflagellates have a resting stage as part of their lifecycle, called a dinocyst (or hypnozygote). And here’s one! A dinocyst of the genus Protoperidinium.

  16. I’m super excited by this one! I believe this is a copepod embryo/nauplius in its hatching membrane (Lugol fixed)😯. After the embryo matures, it breaks out of the outer cyst in this membrane, which then expands before bursting and releasing the nauplius. Swipe to see what I think is an empty cyst (I was wondering this was for ages!)

  17. Some Harpacticoida Copepods from my latest sample from Blakeney Quay. I still haven’t had time to explore copepod ID, so if you have any ideas on genus, please let me know!
