  2. A quotation from Jean Kerr

An actor can remember his briefest notice well into senescence and long after he has forgotten his phone number and where he lives.

  8. 50 years ago, Tim Bliss and Terje Lømo worked in the Oslo lab of the late neuroscientist Per Andersen, where they made a momentous discovery: the fact that when a neuron signals to another neuron frequently enough, the second one will later respond more strongly to new signals for hours afterwards. The phenomenon is called long-term potentiation (LTP) and it’s fundamental to how we learn and remember. @KnowableMag talked to Bliss and Lømo about their discovery, and to other neuroscientists about how they’re applying knowledge about LTP to their research about memory disorders, chronic pain and more.

  9. Disability is full of fun interesting surprises about how life can go.

Ham Hock mentioned feeling older in an off hand comment and my brain suddenly screeched to a halt.

What do you mean "feeling older"? How is that even a thing it's possible to feel?! Maybe this is how some folks feel when they realize not everyone has an internal voice.

  10. Why is it that #Ireland has such a problem with illicit production moreover mass distribution of #Gabapentinoid substances such as #Lyrica #pregabalin #gabapentin #neurotin

#CIA #FBI - Is the plan to replace #fentanyl? Or something like that epidemic, from from a mind-control approach?

Why is there so much of it being produced and trafficed illegally?

There's something very peculiiar and alarming about it to me.

  12. Maybe some of y'all get behind me on this? Make something happen today (beyond the pull request [etc.]). Please.

My healthcare professionals, and #Pfizer have caused me brain damage by prescribing, and ENCOURAGING me to continue taking it despite my report of hallucinations and psychosis.

  13. An elderly relative has dementia.
    In the early stages now.
    They are exercising.

I see research showing that exercise and muscular strength is protective of cognition / memory.

I'm wondering about the effects of a " near maximal capacity" exercise program.

Can anyone point me at research on or directly relevant to this?

Maybe this has differences to a program in which not "blowing up" the athelete is top priority?

  14. I was wondering when I'm gonna realise that I fucked up my backup!

I did a fresh installation of Graphene OS.

I always fuck up my backup. Initially, it was something really bad like forgetting to backup my notes.

Over the years, the severity of the stuff I forget has reduced.

This time it was backing up my RSS Feed OPML export!

Now, I guess I have to start from scratch again! 😐

Edit 1: Oh wait! I had backed it up to Google Drive, after all! This is the other problem! I forget what I forgot! :blobcatgiggle:

  15. 🚨 #Sound #Library #PSA 🚨

The #BBC 's sound effect library is now stocked with over 33,000 samples to download for free.

The extensive #archive has been open to the public since 2018 but has since doubled in size and is completely free for anyone to access.

The sound effects and recordings date back to the 1920s, and comprise both those made in the broadcaster's dedicated studio for use in specific BBC programmes, as well as those captured as field recordings out in the world.

Indexed into categories, the sounds span everything from #footsteps and #transport to #nature and machines. Among the plethora of sounds covered are #reindeer grunts, #rain, #clocks, #horses walking in mud, common #frog calls and crowds at the 1989 FA Cup Final. And that barely scratches the surface. 😲

The sounds have been released under a non-commercial use license (a RemArc License) as part of the BBC's RemArc programme, which is “designed to help trigger memories in people with #dementia using BBC Archive material as stimulation".

A RemArc License stipulates that the samples can only be used for research, educational or personal projects, and therefore can't be legally sampled in music that is then sold.

  16. I often think I can’t #write anymore. I can’t write as well or as often that’s for sure. Not without paying for the brain use with a lot of #pain, #PEM, and #MemoryLoss.

But I’ve written a few posts. Though sometimes it is impossible. Maybe I should put them in my BMaC (Buy Me a Coffee). I originally set that up a few years ago because I was doing better and thought maybe people would give me a few dollars for my #writing. Now it’s a fundraiser because things stopped being better.

    Any input?

  18. Just helped an #ElderlyRelative who has significant short-term #MemoryLoss to use the #TileApp to help her find a handbag with house key and bankcard permanently attached.

Did this over the phone from 15km distance.

    Success!

    I'm happy, they're happy.

I'm highly critical of much of IT app design, the effects of large amounts of screen time on individuals, relationships and communities.

But this app and hardware worked.

  19. Not trivializing or joking, but seriously:

In movies and shows where a person has "total amnesia" and forgets their own name, home town..., how is it they're able to speak fluently + eloquently, read + comprehend everything, reason clearly, have no issues interacting with people, things?

Is this just movies, shows taking license, or is this really possible? 🤔

Again, this is abt "total" loss of memory; not of specific traumatic events.

  20. Want to slow memory loss after 60? A multivitamin may be the answer.

A group taking a #multivitamin was two years younger in #Memory function than a group taking a placebo, research shows

It is the third in a series of studies assessing the cognitive effects of a daily multivitamin on older adults. And a systematic review, or meta-analysis, of the three studies accompanying the most recent paper said their cumulative results were similar: The group taking a multivitamin was two years younger in memory function compared with the group taking a placebo.

  21. Running Rewires the Aging Brain: Exercise Protects Memory Function

Physical activity, particularly running, has been found to rewire aging brains, helping to preserve memory functions.
Long-term running keeps older neurons wired, potentially preventing age-related memory loss and neurodegeneration.
