  1. DART routes running 30+ minutes late throughout the day due to lack of bus priority during North East Link construction works. Causing massive delays and overcrowding.

This is a completely unacceptable situation for the main public transport routes servicing the entire City of Manningham including Doncaster and Bulleen.

And not content with messing up the buses, North East Link works have again disrupted the route 48 tram as well due to "traffic impacts": transport.vic.gov.au/disruptio

This is a completely solvable problem. It's just a question of planning and priorities.

  6. The first passenger run of the new G class tram today. And what a morning!

Starting at Essendon Depot there was a media conference and gathering of politicians, project staff, drivers and many others to celebrate the big day.

The first new tram class for Melbourne since the E class, these medium capacity trams will initially run on the route 59, followed by the 57 and 82.

We rode it down to Flinders Street before it turned back to head up to Essendon Depot. It performed admirably and will be a great addition to the network.

  11. This is a very minor gripe but is anyone else in #Melbourne annoyed by the new tram announcements that refer to " trAHNsport" pronounced the South Australian way?

  16. G class-only speed restriction sign spotted at the west end of Victoria Bridge in Richmond.

I'm guessing this is for trams heading to Kew Depot further down the road for testing, as they are probably heavier than any current tram that regularly uses this heritage bridge.

  21. Countdown timer for a traffic signal but for trams!

These are uncommon but not unheard of in Melbourne for pedestrian crossings. But this is the first I've seen for tram drivers.

It makes a lot of sense here because it's for southbound trams at the very busy Federation Square / Flinders Street Station tram stop on Swanston Street. It allows drivers to better plan for when they will get a green signal and move off the platform, as well as dispatchers on the tram stop platforms.

There are many places where this could be useful across the network. There have been some previous attempts to achieve the same thing with indcator lights etc. but this is the best design I've seen yet.

  26. Melbourne's first level platform tram 'superstop' was built on Collins Street at Swanston Street in 2001.

Unfortunately the south-west and north-west ends of the stop were not built with pedestrian crossings.

24 years later this has finally been fixed with this zebra crossing that gives priority to people crossing.

  31. The Transport Victoria website has been updated and now includes an "AI Chatbot" of questionable utility.

Can't answer very basic questions and doesn't seem to add much value to the website. I would rather they focus their effort on fixing the many errors and improving things like wayfinding online and across the network instead.

It can be accessed by clicking on the chat icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen but only appears on some webpages (notably not the homepage). Should work on this page: transport.vic.gov.au/help-and-

  36. Tram works on Victoria Street and Elizabeth Street are almost done.

The new tram stop on Victoria Street looks far too narrow and small to accommodate the high number of people likely to use it. It's also far from Peel Street which drastically increases the interchange penalty between the 57 and 58 - something that will likely be in higher demand post-Metro Tunnel. While having more accessible stops is great, if a stop is not fit for purpose it will make it more difficult for everyone to use - including people with a disability.

On a positive note, I think I see part of a protected bike lane on the northern approach to the intersection with Therry Street. They also appear to have widened the platforms at the existing chronically-overcrowded Queen Victoria Market stop on Elizabeth Street. I hope they've also fixed the issue here with tram signal delays and platform lengths but we'll have to wait and see.

And of course the long-awaited Victoria Street east-west tram track connection is finally in place!
