Now the new X’Trapolis 2 trains (henceforth referred to as "iTrain 2.0") are running, what's the retroactive title for the first model?

CW: public transport complaint
There's a culture that has taken hold at my state's public transport department that it's fine to turn off trains for a week and run replacement buses.
It makes it really hard to rely on the trains instead of a car. The buses take twice as long and don't allow bikes.
It's like the message is don't structure your life around public transport in Melbourne, you will never have certainty or reliability or flexibility...

Leading on from yesterday here is another bad disruption notice on the Transport Victoria website.
Amongst other things, it tells people to catch a Glen Waverley train from Camberwell Station, and a Craigieburn train from Footscray Station. All completely wrong.

One new issue with State Library / Melbourne Central that I have noticed since the Metro Tunnel opened has to do with interchanging.
When coming out of State Library Station there are no screens to tell you the next train departures from platforms at Melbourne Central. The only bank of screens on the way faces perpendicular to the path of travel.
Installing a new bank of screens facing the top of the escalators as you come up from State Library would be a massive help. Especially when wait times for trains can regularly be 30+ minutes.

Uh oh.
Apparently no injuries, so phew.

Spotted this brand new line diagram and rail connections sign at Parliament Station.
The good:
- Connecting transport is included
- Fare zones are marked
- Colours, fonts, etc are consistent with other PTV wayfinding
- It's close to a mapThe bad:
- It's been installed over two weeks ahead of the timetable and route changes included in this poster which will confuse people
- City Loop directions are not clear, especially explaining which train to catch to get to key stations like Flinders Street or North Melbourne
- There's a lot of wasted space and it's not easy to read
- The zone 1/2 overlap is not marked
- The Glen Waverley Line is not treated the same as the Alamein Line with its design
- Including the 609 as a bus connection from Hawthorn Station is technically correct but not a useable interchange
- Labels for the "Traralgon Line" are different at Flinders Street and RichmondIt's far from the worst poster but there is room for improvement

The Transport Victoria website has been updated and now includes an "AI Chatbot" of questionable utility.
Can't answer very basic questions and doesn't seem to add much value to the website. I would rather they focus their effort on fixing the many errors and improving things like wayfinding online and across the network instead.
It can be accessed by clicking on the chat icon in the bottom right hand corner of your screen but only appears on some webpages (notably not the homepage). Should work on this page: https://transport.vic.gov.au/help-and-support/other-public-transport-help/find-lost-property-on-a-train-tram-or-bus

Out of all the tens of different PIDs and screen layouts across Victoria this new one at Richmond Station on Platforms 5 & 6 is my favourite.
It includes all the necessary information and is a good layout for an interchange station like Richmond with the extra panel on the right showing train connections.

"Minor" disruption at the moment across the entire Melbourne metropolitan rail network. All passenger information displays, apps and website are not showing train departures.

The upgrades to City Loop stations are all well and good, but what's the point of live departure screens if you can't see them?
Blocked from view at most points on the platform by the new signs placed directly in front of them

This is just embarrassing.
Is this really the best information signage we can put up during a major planned disruption? I think we can do much better.
-
Methinks this was not the best placement for the new exit and hearing loop signs at Melbourne Central Station...
To read the PID passengers now have to walk right up to the signs as they're no longer visible on large sections of the platform.

Move over Southern Cross Station - there's a new contender for the least reliable escalators in Melbourne.
These are the only escalators to and from Box Hill Bus Station and have broken at least three times just in the past few months.
Each time they've been broken for at least a fortnight, sometimes longer. This has been an ongoing problem for many years with no signs of anything being changed.

What on Earth? Why would any train ever terminate at East Camberwell, especially when it is bustitution from Camberwell?

On a railway line with 13 different stopping patterns this minimal sign format that doesn't provide information on stations is pretty useless.
Some kind of consistency with labelling services as "express" or "limited express" would also help.

Despite decades of promises to coordinate and unify passenger information in Victoria, we still have completely different ways of displaying the same information on our rail network.
See these examples side by side in Richmond Station.

New post today on railway station patronage for #Melbourne and #Victoria
Some interesting increases and decreases for 2023-24!

A good example of public transport comms and marketing.
This is a poster advertising the recent introduction of Sunday services on the route 612 bus on the concourse at Camberwell Station. It's a good location to advertise this improvement because it is directly in front of an audience with a potentially high propensity to use it (rail passengers).
We need to see more intermodal promotion of services like this.

Another example of poor wayfinding and passenger information on Melbourne's public transport system.
The "BE AWARE OF SWOOPING BIRDS" has been perpetually displayed at Richmond Station since at least March. It's midwinter now. Definitely no swoops now.
Now to make it even worse, someone has decided to block the list of stations for trains on the platform PIDs with this very outdated message. This does nothing except annoy and prevent passengers from reading important information.

Taken from @doublelineblock on the Bird Site, here's my Australian public transport bingo card!
I'd use the free space for Victorian ferry because that hasn't been included for some reason (I've caught it to French Island).

The main escalators to platforms at the tenth busiest station in Victoria are closed for almost six weeks.
Another example of the lack of consideration for the needs and convenience of public transport passengers (see previous toots and posts on these topics, especially Southern Cross Station).

Another Southern Cross Station update, this time from the bank of screens near Bourke Street.
For some reason the clock on one of the four metropolitan screens is one minute slower than the other three.
One is dim and very hard to read, and another is just broken entirely. Another for country trains flickers on and off intermittently.
As with the other screens at Collins St from a few days ago, the order and display of trains is all over the place. For example, why does it only show only one next departure for the Sunbury, Alamein and Craigieburn Lines when most others have the next two, three or even four displayed?
Another mess!

Four departure screens.
Three different times.
Two different sizes.
Another wayfinding mess. For some context, this is the main screen that you see when entering Southern Cross Station from Collins Street. This appears to have confused some people (including me).
Also as a sidenote, in what kind of ridiculous order are the lines listed? There doesn't seem to be any logic. See the leftmost screen for example. The Eltham train is shown first even though there are Hurstbridge trains departing earlier which will also take you to Eltham. Then these are followed on the same screen by a random Flinders Street train on a completely different platform, with other Flinders Street trains to Frankston all the way on the other screen.
It's a wonder anyone can figure out how to get anywhere under these circumstances...

A lot of PTV passenger information either hasn't improved at all or has become worse recently.
Latest example - the official website showing the Upfield Line on an impossible route
