  1. Important Melbourne railway news: the support beams at Armadale Station have been removed and seem to have been replaced by concrete

  2. CW: Melbourne public transport

Impossible to rely on Melbourne's shit trains. Waiting for a replacement bus for about the 30th (seriously) time this year

    Buy a car!

  3. If only there was some important message that this handy new variable sign could show instead of just perpetually saying "Station open"

  4. Today marks the 100th anniversary of one of the worst rail disasters in the history of Melbourne.

On 26 May 1926, a packed Tait electric train crashed into the rear of another waiting on Platform 4 at Caulfield Railway Station.

Three people were killed and over 170 others were injured.

  5. Every time Murray Lonie's name is mentioned, it should be like Brad being mentioned during a screening of Rocky Horror.

  6. Now the new X’Trapolis 2 trains (henceforth referred to as "iTrain 2.0") are running, what's the retroactive title for the first model?

  7. Great day out this morning for the very first X'Ttapolis 2 train in regular passenger service!

This is Melbourne's newest EMU train that will start to replace the ageing, but beloved, Comeng fleet.

Many people came to ride this service to Upfield and back despite the weather and short notice.

More to come in a future video!

  8. Excellent post on the train frequency upgrades announced yesterday for Melbourne and Victoria from Peter Parker.

It's very welcome news but also leaves significant gaps. E.g. the Ringwood Group will have a more frequent service at 11pm on a weekday than at 11am.

  9. CW: public transport complaint

There's a culture that has taken hold at my state's public transport department that it's fine to turn off trains for a week and run replacement buses.

It makes it really hard to rely on the trains instead of a car. The buses take twice as long and don't allow bikes.

It's like the message is don't structure your life around public transport in Melbourne, you will never have certainty or reliability or flexibility...

  10. Leading on from yesterday here is another bad disruption notice on the Transport Victoria website.

Amongst other things, it tells people to catch a Glen Waverley train from Camberwell Station, and a Craigieburn train from Footscray Station. All completely wrong.

  11. Is it just me or has the disruption information from Transport Victoria become even worse recently?

Take this for example. No City Loop trains for Burnley Group trains. The official advice is to take a "City Circle bus" (rail replacement bus) to get to City Loop stations.

No mention of the many other more practical options like the Metro Tunnel or any trams to get to Melbourne Central and Parliament.

  12. One new issue with State Library / Melbourne Central that I have noticed since the Metro Tunnel opened has to do with interchanging.

When coming out of State Library Station there are no screens to tell you the next train departures from platforms at Melbourne Central. The only bank of screens on the way faces perpendicular to the path of travel.

Installing a new bank of screens facing the top of the escalators as you come up from State Library would be a massive help. Especially when wait times for trains can regularly be 30+ minutes.

  13. Bank card touch on option spotted at a myki gate at Footscray Station. Only this one had it available though.

  14. These signs are a juxtaposition that we hate to see.

There are maintenance works scheduled on the Belgrave / Lilydale Line between Box Hill and Parliament on the same weekend as the Grand Prix, Moomba, AFL Opening Round and Labour Day.

Not a great way to promote heading to the Grand Prix or any of the other events this weekend by public transport.

  16. Heh I didn't notice there was a disruption. Because the Cranbourne / Pakenham Lines don't go through Richmond anymore, there was no information there.

I think this is another thing that can be improved now that the network is more reliant on interchanges. It may be important to know what is happening on another line, even if it doesn't directly go to your station.
