  1. I got a "refrigerator question" after #Silo TV series (You enjou a film but later get a "wait-what?" moment) It makes no sense for absolute tyranny to exist in a community of less than 10k people, struggling to survive in a hole. Why lie to people for hundreds of years yet the truth increases chances or survival?

Is tyranny just an overused trope in dystopias for story conflict, or is this how the system makes us tolerate the bad governments of today?

  2. Looking forward to watching the Atlantics (Atlantique) film this weekend, as part of our little #MastodonMovieClub join us in watching and talking about this much celebrated West African film 😊

  3. The second film we watch in our virtual #MastodonMovieClub is “Atlantique”, a Senegalese/Belgian film by Mati Diop.

Watch it and share your views under the Hashtags #MastodonMovieClub.

And feel free to catch up with the first film we watched: “The Burial of Kojo” by Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule.

  4. @Trenton_Hoshiko It was on my harddrive for a few years now, so watched it in my place. For now the #MastodonMovieClub is simply a virtual affair, you watch and discuss the film with the hashtag. Perhaps in future we can have a virtual meet where chill and talk.

Whatever we decide! I think I just had #StarTrekHour in mind which is once a week. But if we don't have a specific time window to discuss the films 'live' on Mastodon, we can do it as we like.

Do you think we should set some rules for the thing?

  6. We just watched the first film at #MastodonMovieClub and this was the beautiful The Burial Of Kojo, and enchanting and visually exciting masterpiece set in Ghana, by the Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz. I look forward to seeing more from this director, especially the new film he is doing, a musical version of The Color Purple.

I totally get the 'foreign' feeling. We learn so little about the daily life in other countries and TV is dominated by American shows and films. It's so refreshing to see actors and actresses I've never seen before, strange symbolism which challenges me and some unusual style of filmmaking.

I'd highly recommend we watch "Atlantique" this weekend. I would love to hear your thoughts on that one.

I don't know if they are just dreams. I wondered if her father's own feeling of guilt actually caused his death.

Would you say that the colours had some (symbolic) meaning?

  9. @Crystal_Fish_Caves Yes, I thought they were doing the cliche bad=black and good=white in their symbolism, but I liked how the story turned out. Beautifully shot, great visuals, and I think the filmmaker put a lot of thought into this film. It deserves all the noise it made :-)

The film left me with many questions. (I consider that a good thing). It is beautifully filmed and I love the story. I'll definitely want to watch it again.

The storytelling is kind of fragmented, not linear, with different layers which unfold throughout the film. There is few dialogue, the story is supported by stunning visuals. It left a lot of space for my own thoughts and interpretation.

I can't say much about the story because I feel I haven't completely figured it out yet.

No, that's exactly what I thought: Just post your views, opinion, questions with the #MastodonMovieClub. Perhaps we could add a #TheBurialOfKoji, just in case we have so much fun with it that it becomes a continuous thing and we want to be clear which film we are discussing.

  12. Who wants to participate in the #mastodonmovieclub where we watch a #film and discuss it? Preferably some good indie film. We are starting with The Burial of Kojo a film from Ghana.

  13. In our #MastodonMovieClub we watch “The Burial of Kojo” this weekend. Feel free to join @dilmandila and me for the discussion next week.

  14. @dilmandila

Let's start the #MastodonMovieClub! I'll try to watch the Burial of Kojo and we can talk about it next week.

"Atlantics" is visually very interesting and beautiful. But the story is about injustice and that subject always makes me sad. I think it's everything but boring.

  15. @michaelthec @dan @ericleamen @germ @therichardexp well cool #MastodonMovieClub seems to be of interest! How we go about choosing a film? Idk! :blobnervous:

  16. @Whereistrav Totally down for #MastodonMovieClub! I watch a lot of visual media but the list of big, classic movies I’ve never seen seems to shock people.
