X-Men ’97 – Season 2, Episode 4: Rise Of Apocalypse – Part 2 (2026) – Review
While the X-Men each display a dazzling list of abilities, one of their largest strengths seems to be able to pull off a big finish as it’s humongous, four-episode, opening Apocalypse adventure comes to something approaching an end. When it comes to musing over the way the mutant arch-enemy has been used on screen over the years, you can’t help but recall Oscar Issac’s live action attempt to bring the unstoppable villain to life with disappointing results. But while X-Men: Apocalypse may remain a glaring lesson how not to approach big screen mutant villainy, you can leave it to X-Men ’97 to school us all how it’s supposed to go down.
Part time travelling origin story, part emotional boot in the nuts, it’s once again time for Marvel’s animated redux to show everyone how it’s done and strip us raw while it does so. Paradoxes, sacrifices and grand scale destruction are the order of the day here as the X-Men gain an enemy but see their membership drop by a fateful number…The alliance between the time-displaced X-Men and a pre-Apocalypse En Sabah Nur seems to be coming apart at the seams thanks to Magneto being called out on his frequent stretching of the truth. However, both Charles’ powers of persuasion and a giant laser beam sent by time traveling conquerer, Rama-Tut, manages to calm the former slave down and once more empathy temporary reigns.
With the X-Men’s future origins now revealed to the being who is destined to become the greatest foe they’ll ever face, some of the team are understandably nervous, but nevertheless, the group head off into the desert to locate a temple of unimaginable power that Rama-Tut wants to covet, but upon arriving they find that it not only contains the body of a fallen Celestial, but it’s also is housing Ship, a weapon frequently used by Apocalypse in the future. This is undoubtedly bad news, and the fact that Apocalypse’s future is laid out on the walls of the control room is the final straw for En Sabah Nur who violently rages against Erik and Charles’ attempts to subvert his rightful destiny.
Soon the fight is joined as Magneto, Professor X, Beast, Rogue, Nightcrawler and Bishop struggle in vain to stop En Sabah Nur from fully becoming the armoured, techno-enhanced dreadnought they’ve failed to stop so many times in the past. While the genocidal madman launches a black hole at Rama-Tut’s city, Magneto reasons that if it’s his fault Apocalypse came to be, it’s only fair that he tries to clean up his mess alone. However, with the rest of the X-Men zapped safely back to the 90s, only Charles and Erik are left to quell the rage of a monster who delights in thining the heard. Needless to say, a tremendous loss is incurred. When it comes to stirring up a big finish (even if we’reonly four episodes into the season), you can always count on X-Men ’97 bringing the goods in incredibly devestating ways. Yes, a lot of things get destroyed, a few people get punched through walls and a lot of cosmic stuff gets thrown our way as the episode goes big with Celestials and even a big Kang the Conqueror nod, but the real meat of the piece comes from the central relationship that started all this off to begin with – Artie and Leech. I’m obviously taking the piss, but once again the dynamic of Professor X and Magneto proves to be a powerful pivot to hang the origin of Apocalypse on. We’ve already seen their various methods of teaching butt up against each other earlier in the season to fascinating effect, but with such overwhelming stakes in play, this latest comparison proves to be the most affecting yet.
After En Sabah Nur uncovers the fact that Magneto has been playing fast and loose with facts in order to force the results he wants in half the time, Charles has to step in with (most of) the truth in order to make nicey-nicey with the future posterboy for genocide. If you ever wanted a perfect comparison between the two, it’s right here etched on Nur’s white and blue face – no matter who he flies his flag with, Erik will always be a fanatic, bending rules and shouting down any dissent with a flex of his magnetic abilities. Watch him instantly remove democracy from the team by breaking their time bands in order to get his own way, or his claims that even now he has no qualms about “acting” the villain to fast track any difficult decisions. On the flip mode, Charles repeatedly puts the work in, taking time to understand, to be understood and only using his powers to gain understanding of En Sabah Nur’s ridiculously tragic past. Of course, it all comes to nothing when, thanks to some Celestial interference and a whole lot of paradoxical jiggery pokery, it seems that Chuck and Eric were actually destined to create their most hated enemy directly because of their attempts to change him for the better.Of course, from here things get epic – I mean, you can’t fling black holes around ancient Egypt without the scale of the episode going through the roof, but despite Kang cameos, Celestials and the sight of Magento using Ship to plug the offending event horizon, it’s the human (or mutant emotion that truly dives the episode.
A nice little aside has a formally underutilised Rogue sadly reminisce about the fallen Gambit to a Nur who’s in a rare, empathic mood; but while it also ends up doubling as a spot of subtle foreshadowing, it’s a genuinely touching character moment for a show often lauded for it’s louder moments. However, it also serves to remind us that just because X-Men ’97 is a continuation of a cartoon that originated in the 90s, it doesn’t mean that it can’t aim an optic blast right at the feels when it comes to mortality. And so after valiantly remaining behind to fix his Apocalypse-themed mistake, Magneto is ultimately executed by his enemy while a devastated Charles watches. It’s not particularly quick either as the towering tyrant even gives the pair the time to quickly say their last goodbyes telepathically before callously disintegrating the master of magnetism while tears stream down his friend’s horrified face. While I’d argue that it’s not quite as emotionally devestating as Gambit’s exit, it still packs a hell of a wallop before the hulking despot callously saunters off into the sunset..
With the Apocalypse angle presumably done with for a little while, a post-credit sting grants us a cameo of Captain America and Black Widow’s and reveals that next week’s installment will see Wolverine go back to investigating Weapon X which will obviously give us a well-earned breather after such an epic run. We’ve deserved it.Just when you think X-Men ’97 can’t get any bigger, it does just that with the closure of a story arc that establishes the creation of Apocalypse as the X-Men’s fault and ends with the death of a major player. Still, now that the team has lost its magnetic personality, I’m actually looking forward to an episode with a somewhat smaller scale. After all, how can the big part continue to feel so big if you don’t put some toughs among those peaks – and make no mistake, this episode was an absolute peak.

X-Men ’97 – Season 2, Episode 3: Rise Of Apocalypse – Part 1 (2026) – Review
As we reach the final installment of X-Men ’97’s three-episode premiere, we finally catch up with those last, time-displaced, members of the X-Men. Not that we needed much reminding, but it’s indicative of the sheer scale of this world that it’s taken three whole episodes to squeeze everyone in and we’re still only at the start of the season. Of course, while the previous two episodes delivered such familiar sights as Wolverine popping claws, Jubilee busting moves and Cyclops and Jean making the entire fate of the time stream about them, there’s one classic X-Men trope we’ve yet to see – Professor X and Magneto having one of their devestating fallouts.
Yep, we may have all been swept back to the sands of 3000 BC and dumped in the company of a pre-despot Apocalypse who’s going through his dashing, Omar Sharif phase, but it seems nothing can stop Chuck and Erik when they get into one of their world-changing spats. After our time spent with the X-Men hurled into the far flung future and the ones still left to pick up the pieces in the 90s, we finally check in with Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Beast and Nightcrawler to see how they’ve been faring in the Egypt of 3000 BC. We find that hey’ve had quite a different experience to the others as they first found themselves meeting En Sabah Nur long before he became the murderous tyrant known as Apocalypse. Back during this period of his long existence, the first mutant has cast off the shackles of slavery under the cruel rule of time traveling Pharaoh, Rama-Tut and over the past few months, the wary X-Men has tried to guide him down a more peaceful path. Only some are less wary than others, and while the X-Men contingent think is wise not to get too close to this embryonic phase of one of their most hated enemies, Magneto can’t help fully assigning himself as Nur’s mentor and confidant. While Beast tinkers and toils with Rama-Tut’s future tech left over from Nur’s victorious battles in order to make a workable time machine, the master of magnetism tries to mold one of the most dangerous beings to ever exist into a more compassionate type to ensure a better future for all. However, out of the two of them, it’s obviously Charles who watched Back To The Future the closest as he has grave misgivings about making such huge changes to the past in order to influence the future.
However, rankling at Magneto’s influence is Nur’s second in command, Baal, and with Rama-Tut’s defeat going way too slowly for his troops, he hopes to show his leader that his new friends from the future may not be entirely telling him the truth. Once Nur discovers his allies have been repurposing Rama-Tut’s machines behind his back, he reacts in a way highly recognisable to the being he’s destined to become. In trying to prevent the Apocalypse we know, has Magneto merely cemented his creation? There’s always been something fascinating about the storytelling that X-Men ’97 employs and I’m not entirely certain how they manage to pull it off time and time again. With only thirty minutes to play with and a 90s animated vibe to maintain that demands every character has to constantly seem like a coiled spring even when they’re relaxing, the show somehow still managed to deliver perfectly dropped character beats despite constantly moving at the speed of an incontinent Quicksilver looking for a working toilet at a music festival. It’s frankly amazing to watch, especially as we get to see it in an episode which contains the three heaviest hitters in the X-Men cannon. For a start, we’re back on the Professor X/Magneto merry-go-round once again as these two guys still can’t quite get on the same page, even when trying to save all of history while on the same side. Charles – ever the more careful of the two – fully understands that dicking around with history is ludicrously risky, especially if it comes in the form of a being who chalks up genocide as one of his hobbies; but as Erik has always been the more enthusiastic of the two, he sees En Sabah Nur as clay to mold that could kick-start healthy mutant/human relations over 3000 years earlier. Utterly unconcerned with altering the entirety of recorded history in order to pave the way for homo superior relations, a gung-ho Magneto hopes to eventually travel back to a 90s that is already a utopia for his kind without any thought about whether or not he’d actually still exist.
It’s one of those fascinating, quick-fire character drops that show that even when they’re on the same side, the differences between Charles and Erik’s motives become glaringly obvious. Magneto will always be an all-or-nothing, risk everything kind of guy, even when he’s not trying to make earth’s leaders eat their own furniture, while Charles’ softly-softly approach is arguably way too careful to score instant results. This does mean that Beast, Nightcrawler and Rogue only get to add the occasion aside throughout the episode, but it’s a sacrifice that’s perfectly acceptable when the show is giving us its version of a gargantuan biblical epic, complete with robot guards and time traveling Pharaohs. No doubt some speculation will be made about the use of Kang variant, Rama-Tut – especially after getting purged from the live-action MCU after such a large build-up – but he’s actually the perfect foil for the story thanks to his devotion to conquering and reliance on future technology. It’s the grooming of En Sabah Nur that takes precedence here and while many stories these days are littered with revised origin stories that cast famous villains in an earlier, heroic light, watching a young Apocalypse back in his luxurious-maned Fabian era, fight to free the slaves like Dwayne Johnson playing Moses as the Scorpion King, is admittedly kinda cool.
Of course, it doesn’t take long for everything to go tits up and En Sabah Nur to figure out that his new “friends” have a completely separate agenda to what they’ve been telling him and thus feel violently betrayed. However, after Bishop finally pops up in disguise (a la Lando Calrissian in Return Of The Jedi?) after traveling back from the 90s to rescue them, they manage to escape only after the damage has already been done. You see, it’s time for one of X-Men ’97’s explosive cliffhangers as Rama-Tut has built a machine of huge destructive power (a la Emperor Palpatine in Return Of The Jedi?) and promptly fires it at his clutch of enemies in an attempt to wipe them all out. You have to admire the brazen nature of Marvel by giving us three whole episodes to start the season with and still ending them on a cliffhanger, but that’s life when you’re trying to emulate the momentum of a 90s cartoon. The triple-threat premiere comes to a close with style after a trio of episodes that’s audaciously covered over 6000 years, delivered dystopian futures, 90s beats and yet another potentially world-ending spat in the friendship of Professor X and Magneto. However, what’s even more impressive is that once we wrap up this absurdly epic storyline next week, we’ll still have five whole episodes to go in the season, so who knows what else is going to happen? Something pretty awesome I’m guessing… but until then the X-Men team is using their Egyptian villian to run a truly impressive pyramid scheme.

X-Men ’97 – Season 2, Episode 2: A Force To Be Reckoned With (2026) – Review
Probably one of the best virtues of the original animated series was how it mimicked the sprawling, storytelling style of Chris Claremont’s game changing story arcs. While a huge, overarching story may have been brewing, that didn’t stop the influential author from taking time out here and there to ensure every little corner of the X-Men universe was being addressed. Just because the uncanny mutants had barely gotten back from Battleworld, it didn’t mean that the author couldn’t throw in a little side story involving Colossus and Juggernaut getting into a little impromptu bar fight thanks to a mischevious Wolverine.
Yes, it meant that you had to wait a little longer to get the big picture, but it also created a world that was full, vibrant and had many different shades beyond simply thwarting Magneto for the fifteenth time. Well, with it’s second episode, X-Men ’97 second season once again does a little story hopping and temporary ditches the time traveling shenanigans the previous episode had already set up. Who could possibly justify such a switch? Try X-Force, bub.Leaving the rest of the main X-Men team still stuck in their respective, Apocalypse-ruled, time periods, we take a quick time-slide to the present (aka. the 90s) to see what’s shaking after the world thought that the X-Men X-pired on the exploding Asteroid M. In the absence of the uncanny ones, Val Cooper now calls the shots with the government-sanctioned team of mutants named X-Factor who include Havok (Cyclops’ brother, Alex), Polaris (magnetic spawn of Magneto), the multiplying Multiple Man, were-girl Wolfsbane and the rather self explanatory Strong Guy.
Angered at the government once again trying to round up runaway mutants and incensed that former friends have signed up to do it, Jubilee ends up taking an offer from Cable to join X-Force, a mutant strike team that’s gearing up to take the fight to Apocalypse wherever he decides to show up next. Joining Jubilee in this team of determined ass-kickers is boyfriend Sunspot, sword swinging telepath Psylocke and former X-Man/former Horseman Archangel and after they manage to capture one of Apocalypse’s other acolytes, War, Jubilee gets a jarring example of how hard hitting X-Force is when they execute the henchman after the interrogation.
After a lead brings them to Emma Frost, the newly formed group finds themselves walking into a trap set by X-Factor, which allows Jubilee to angrily demand to know from Polaris why she’d turn on her own kind with government back up. Can her words sway her captor and can her new team manage to aid her escape and continue their mission? And in regards to the mutants still stuck in 3960 AD, isn’t time that they got their colourful butts back to the 90s and let Nathan Summers get back to becoming Cable? While you could argue that “A Force To Be Reckoned With” cheekily disrupts the “A-plot” (A standing for Apocalypse, of course) by catching us up with the status quo of the 90s, the fact that the episode temporarily sidelines all the time travel stuff and takes the show back to it’s basics proves to be just what the doctor ordered thanks to the future shock of episode one. There’s no convoluted timelines here, no need to remember who is stuck in what timeline and why, and no grappling with the Summers impressively messy family tree; all you have to worry about is that once again there’s a team of badass mutants running around trying to save a world that hates and fears them. As palete cleansers go, it’s pretty great and I probably wouldn’t have minded it if this had actually been the first episode of the season (3960 AD coda excluded of course).
Not only is it the X-Men universe going back to its core mission, but we also let a few heavy hitters take a belated turn at the plate such as Psylocke (the visuals of her butterfly shaped telepath abilities are sublime) and the long suffering Archangel. However, arguably the most fun is how much the episode doubles down on making X-Force the main team by awesomely changing the entire opening credits sequence to feature them rather than the classic cast right down to including revamped greatest hits moments from the original series to truly sweeten the deal.
However, as awesome as this all is, it’s actually a kickass cover for us to get another Jubilee-themed episode. Before some of you roll your eyes at the news, it turns out to be a fantastically paced episode that sees her continue on her journey from moderately annoying Wolverine sidekick to a full-fledged hero, who can not only take on an entire team of armed guards on her own, but can stand up to injustice within her own team, even if it’s being instigated by someone as imposing as Cable. In fact, the callous execution of War is one of those frequent moments where X-Men ’97 springboards out of merely being colourful nostalgia and shows that it’s dead set on tackling far weightier themes. Even Archangel, a man who is living (albeit blue) proof that the influence of Apocalypse can be broken, is perfectly OK with the acolytes of their nemesis getting put down like dogs – it isn’t even in self-defence, the bowl-haired henchman is tied to a tree while he’s double-tapped by a rifle the size of a microwave.Of course, from here, Jubilee eventually ends up on her own after some expected jiggery pokery from a double-dealing Emma Frost leads her to get captured by X-Factor, and it’s here that the character gets some major opportunities to show how much she’s truly grown. Obviously, her extended fight sequence is fantastic as the show once again displays its talents for making mutant abilities look awesomely fresh on-screen by taking those firework powers and finding innovative, offensive uses for them (having it set to “Volcano Girls” by Veruca Salt is a great touch), but the real meat here is having her talk Polaris round using the other lessons learnt during her time as an X-Man. Using reason, empathy and just outright goodness, she does Charles Xavier’s dream proud by appealing for decency before rescuing her fellow prisoners and bringing them into the moderately safe arms of an attacking X-Force.
While we end on a coda that sees Nathan Summers agree that it’s time to send his time-displaced parents (plus Wolverine, Storm and Morph) back to the 90s in order to combat the growing threat of Apocalypse, there’s a sizable gap in the story that still needs addressing – the 3000 BC adventures of Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Rogue and Nightcrawler. However, it’s testament to the storytelling and character work of the show that this detour concerning the maturing attitude of a teenage girl who can make flashy lights, proves to be just as exciting as a dystopian future ruled by an immortal Egyptian despot. While other shows often tend to struggle with such potentially jarring story jumps that prioritise “smaller” arcs in favour of big ones, X-Men ’97 reminds us that in the world of mutants, there are no smaller arcs – not when they’re as well handled as this. With the next episode undoubtedly hurtling us back to 3000 BC to pick up that final, dangling thread, any answers we’ve been still yearning for will soon be addressed; but it’s to the show’s credit that waiting for it has been incredibly cool.
