  1. Halifax, Nova Scotia 🌊 A blustery day in #Halifax! Expect a high of 6°C with rain showers moving out by midday, leaving us with cloudy periods and gusty winds. The harbor will be choppy today! Temperatures drop to 0°C tonight, so watch for "black ice" on the bridges tomorrow morning. Keep the rain shell handy! #HalifaxWX #NSStorm #Maritimes

  2. Hype for the Future 62P: Kings Landing, New Brunswick

Introduction Kings Landing is located west of the City of Fredericton in the Province of New Brunswick, Canada. The historical significance of the United Empire Loyalist migrations, though also impacting the areas nearer Fredericton, Saint John, Annapolis Royal (Nova Scotia), the Eastern Township of Québec, and numerous areas in both Northern and Southern Ontario, has largely been associated with the migrations from the New York area to the Province of New Brunswick and surrounding […]

  3. Hype for the Future 62E: Town of Madawaska, Maine

Introduction The Town of Madawaska is located in Aroostook County, Maine, and is smaller than the Canadian City of Edmundston, Madawaska County, New Brunswick, on the opposite side of the Saint John River. Acadian Heritage Like much of Aroostook County, and especially the Saint John Valley, the Madawaska area is largely determined by the Acadians and their cultural influence and heritage throughout the region. Influence also comes from the United Empire Loyalists, many of whom had […]

  5. In their predominantly white high school in #Halifax , a group of #BlackStudents face daily reminders of #racism ,ranging from abuse (racist graffiti on washroom walls), to #exclusion (the omission of #BlackHistory from textbooks). They work to establish a #CulturalAwareness #YouthGroup , a vehicle for building pride and self-esteem through #educational and #cultural programs. With help from mentors, they discover the richness of their heritage and learn some of the ways they can begin to effect change.

  7. #RCMP issued an #apology on September 7, 2024, for the historic use of #StreetChecks and other harmful interactions with members of the #African #NovaScotian community. It was an apology too long in coming, for treatment that was, in the words of Rev. Lennett Anderson, “dehumanizing and tragic.” And the RCMP's history suggests we should be deeply skeptical that the proposed action plan will be even close to what is required to remedy these grave injustices.

In his 2019 report, written for the #NovaScotia #HumanRights Commission, Dr. Scot Wortley defines street checks as any occasion in which civilians are stopped by #police and subjected to intrusive questions, and their personal information collected into a database. He confirmed what community members have known for years: people of African descent in the #Halifax region are almost six times more likely to face street checks.

It took five years after the release of this report for the RCMP to apologize for the harms caused. They also committed to an action plan, developed in consultation with members of 13 African Nova Scotian communities and the Association of #Black #SocialWorkers.

  8. Nova Scotia's Department of #Environment and #ClimateChange is looking for #PublicInput on 16 proposed new or expanded #wilderness areas and #NatureReserves.

It opened an #OnlineSurvey that will be active until Sept. 20.

"Designating these sites will be one more step in helping #NovaScotia protect 20 per cent of its land and water by 2030," the department said in a news release on Friday. Nova Scotia's Department of Environment and Climate Change is looking for public input on 16 proposed new or expanded wilderness areas and nature reserves.

  9. Why is it so hard to find Cabernet Franc in New England? I first tried it in the Maritimes, and then I found some at a winery in the Finger Lakes region. Wikipedia says it’s one of the twenty most popular styles worldwide. Apparently not near me! It’s not my favorite, but I will say it’s underrated. Heavy on deep grape and black currant, with notes of white or black pepper (I’m not a super-taster).

  14. #FossilAdventCalendar Day 3

We're jumping to the #Maritimes today to celebrate one of #Canada's 🇨🇦 most important #fossil sites. #NovaScotia's #JogginsFossilCliffs are a window into the #Carboniferous, a period that saw the spread of a new #biome: #forests. This #fossilized #tree on display at the #RoyalOntarioMuseum is a #lycopsid, a super-sized relative of living #ClubMosses that, along with #cycads, #ferns, and early relatives of #seed #plants, made up the #flora of the #Joggins #forest.
