OK, time to build linux 2.6!
> Makefile:1441: *** mixed implicit and normal rules: deprecated syntax
Ugh, okay, first we build old Make. Surely Make from 2006 will do…?
> Makefile:1441: *** mixed implicit and normal rules: Stop
Oh, okay. Welp. Make from 2002 will do…?
> glob.c:576:23: error: implicit declaration of function
God dang it, haha, of course I can’t build 2002 Make. Surely GCC 4.9 will work…?

I am really liking LXQT! :gutkato_koro:
It feels substantially modular, simple, lightweight, and power-user friendly!
I love seeing an QT desktop that’s independent the behemoth KDE. :kde:
Another cute thing: No need to mess with gsettings or some dedicated command to mess with the config of a running system, you can just write to config files in ~/.config/lxqt, and it’ll be applied on-the-fly! Loving it~

My new alarm is highly effective! :gutkato_x3:
calendar.sh | lp sleep 15 # Let it print loudly… mpv --loop-file=inf ~/.local/share/sounds/Panzer\ Vor\!/Panzer\ Vor\!\ —\ Sonorilo\ \(Kuntanke\).oggIt prints my calendar to my super-loud dot-matrix printer, then plays music until I get outta bet and smack my PC :gutkato_dormas:

Omarchy really is just a terrible, low-effort repackaging of the meta. No attempt at a cohesive system, just slap together whatever’s popular. Hyperland, web-apps, why not! It drives me actually insane that this project got so much attention, let alone funding.

Now *that’s* what I call print-statement debugging! :gutkato_renversa:

Do mi finfine altigis mian Debianon al nova versio! :debian: :gutkato_hura:
Almenaŭ sur unu el miaj klapkomputiloj. Mi havas alian, pli malnovan kaj kadukan, kie mi ankoraŭ lasos la malnovan version kelkatempe. :gutkato_klapkomputilo:
La altigo iris glate… ĝis la pakaĵilo plendis pri loke instalita pakaĵo, kiun mi forgesis malinstali. Do mi petis la pakaĵilon forigi ĝin, sed la pakaĵilo plendis, ke ĝi ne povas funkcii, ĉar mankas al ĝi iu biblioteko… kiun ĝi mem forigis provante altigi la sistemon. :gutkato_ridas_nervume:
Do mi permane elŝutis kaj instalis la mankantan bibliotekon, malinstalis la probleman pakaĵon, kaj daŭrigis la altigon. La cetero, dankinde, iris glate! Nu, krom tio, ke la pakaĵilo ial malinstalis mian tutan labor-medion KDE, kiun mi devis iom post iom reinstali. :kde:
Sume mi esperis pli glatan transiron, sed ŝajnas, ke ĉio funkcias bone nun, kaj mi perdis neniujn datumojn. Do tio ankoraŭ estis pli bona sperto, ol ĉiutagaj ĝisdatigoj en [Arch Linux]. :gutkato_hihias:

… like kicking a dead whale down the beach.
I kept seeing this phrase on my favorite image-board, and it always seemed so random! :gutkato_ebrieta:
But apparently, it comes from
yacc’s author Stephen C. Johnson, while he was complaining about how much it sucks to program for the IBM MVS TSO, ~30 years ago. I never expected it to have any actual history to it! :gutkato_hihias: -
:krisigno_averta: GNU M4 CONSIDERED DANGEROUS :krisigno_averta:
Some people find ‘m4’ to be fairly addictive. They first use ‘m4’ for simple problems, then take bigger and bigger challenges, learning how to write complex sets of ‘m4’ macros along the way. Once really addicted, users pursue writing of sophisticated ‘m4’ applications even to solve simple problems, devoting more time debugging their ‘m4’ scripts than doing real work. Beware that ‘m4’ may be dangerous for the health of compulsive programmers.

I love the spirit of suckless, to an extent, and I think that striving toward simplicity and coherence is important. Modern systems need an immesurably heavy dose of the UNIX philosophy. But simplicity shouldn’t mean “toss usability to the wayside.” That approach is kind of elitist, to say the least. :gutkato_ploras_riveron: Such a system should be usable by everyone, even if its beauty and underpinnings might not be grokked by all. I don’t want a pure system that only gurus can use… :jamada_gesto_stulteta: #lang_en #unix #lignux #suckless -
I am going to make a simple guide for people to start their journey in #FLOSS.
Trying to help with confusions I faced.
Which distro to select , settings that I didn't know , troubleshooting in basic or popular software Etc.
If there are other guides like this do let me know , so that I don't end up putting similar things.
And If you want to contribute to this short guide

:luno_purpura: ✨ Here are your horoscopes for this lovely August on the Wired! ✨ :luno_rozkolora:
:parabola: Arch: In your personal life, you’ll feel more touchy than usual. Your friends might start to feel like they walk on eggshells around you.
:debian: Debian: Information that seemed dry will suddenly seem more enthralling; you’ll be more bookish than usual, and your collegues will noice.
:gentoo: Gentoo: You’ll find this is a time to mend failing connections. Rebuilding bridges, again and again, takes time — but it will pay off.
:guix: Guix: Your perfectionist streak will rear its ugly head this month, causing you to clash with those close to you. Take care to temper yourself.
🍬 Linux Mint: You’re going to develop a sweet-tooth, this month! In the summer heat, you’ll find something sweet. Romance is in the cards.
🦎 OpenSUSE: Chaos that has defined your life will settle down, and start feeling more manageable. This lull-time is ideal for taking stock of your life.

I’ve recently been working on a Firefox :firefox: extension for running shell commands — Shellfox! I’m dogfooding it, and think it’s in a useful state now. :gutkato_dikfingro_supren:
It lets you run :terminalo: terminal commands through the right-click menu or address-bar button, and register download commands to execute when a download starts or ends.
Right now, I use it to play yt-dlp-compatible videos with :mpv: MPV, and to save a downloaded file’s source URL in an extended attribute (which Firefox removed support for; oh well :gutkato_hihias:).
