  1. In a couple months, when my health appointments settle down, I recently decided I'm going to make a serious effort to learn basic French. I'm a quarter French, after all, from my mom's side.

I've been so daunted by hearing that, if you do not speak it perfectly, you are ridiculed. I'd like to think that's just an urban legend. But I've dwelled on it for decades, and it's time to cultivate this special interest.

Where I live in Colorado, there aren't real opportunities to use it IRL. So lots of films, here we come! I've enjoyed French films for a long time with subtitles, so it'll be great to understand nuances lost across the language barrier.

  2. RE: hachyderm.io/@liztai/116355499

The most difficult thing about writing in Chinese is that I have "patches" in my vocab so it's difficult to string entire sentences, especially on difficult subjects like politics. Yet, it's a mystery that I comprehend much more than I can speak/write.

It's like the two brain spheres are not connected. (prob sound neurological reasons for this)

So the only way to bridge this gap is to speak and write more.

  3. @futurebird Reminds me of the United States' colonialism. 😎

Yes, British #English as foreign language is also my way communicating with people in different countries, but I'm happy to speak other languages to join people in more corners of the world. For the future, we should not only learn Spanish but Chinese!

  9. I find it annoying when I read something written by a journalist (mainly) which I know full well is inaccurate or down right wrong. Whenever I’ve had to write about a subject I am only partially or moderatly acquainted with I have gone to great pains to ensure I am as accuratte as possible. I wish article writers would be as diligent.

For example, a multi-lingual author writing about how hard it is to learn a new language wrote this:

“Or understand the practical phrase "ça a été" in French, which translates "as it has been", but in conversation is one of the most versatile ways of expressing something was well?”

Noting that the author studied French at university level and spent a year teaching there (presumably as an English -as a second language - teacher) her translation suffers from a typo as it should be translated ‘ as “it has been” ‘. It is also used to mean ‘it has gone well’ not something was well, there is a difference. On top of that, the ‘a’ between ça and été is mute when spoken and the expression can also be used as a question ‘did it go well?.

So there was a lot there to annoy me, enough to toot about it :)

Aside from that the article was interesting, not in the least because i spent a year at a Defence Intensive Language school learning Mandarin back in the 70s.

  16. I talked with English speakers in an English world on VRchat.
Usually I only go to a language learning world, but the people I met today weren't from there.
I've not been confident enough to join English worlds, so it was sort of a challenge.
They were nice and it was fun, but I got nervous and tired, and I ended up feeling a little sick.
I want to be able to talk in English comfortably.

  17. I didn't listen to English at all yesterday (because I was hanging out the entire day), so I want to listen to English a lot today.

Since I had plans to take an English test, I was focused on practicing reading.
But it turned out my listening got really worse when I was taking the test, and the test was devastating.
I've been trying to listen to English as much as I can these days, and I feel like I'm getting my listening ability back.
But I need to improve my listening much more.

  18. I forgot how to make friends online.
I made some friends by making fanfic years ago, but now we've drifted apart.
Now, I don't have a passion for any creative things.
For now, I'm into learning English, but #learninglanguages itself is not good for making friends.
I want to talk about something in English, but I can't find something I'm interested in.

I mean, of course I've made several friends who are learning languages.
But they are very good at my language and I often end up talking in my mother tongue.

  19. It still frustrates me how good my Chinese listening skills are, meaning I understand 80% of conversations but when I speak, I have the vocab of a kindergartner 🫠. You'd think that vocab knowledge I have would be accessible to my brain region that controls speech, but like most corporations my brain works in silos.

Ps: I know I have to practice speaking more but omg the lack of time.... 😆

  20. How-To Geek: Google Translate Can Now Help You Learn a New Language. “Google has a lot of different apps and services, but one that is often overlooked is Google Translate. However, that’s about to change, as the company just unveiled a slew of new language learning tools coming to Google Translate, including conversational experiences to help you learn.”

  21. Social media is so useful for learning languages, you know. Especially slang for ... unmentionables. 😝

Today I found out what 牛蛋 "cow's egg" means 😅

Translation for what the butcher said: "These bull testicles are so springy and tender!"

PS pretty sure QQ is what we put in our bubble tea 🤣. Now I can't think of it the same way

This is better than any HSK textbook.

  26. Gawd this shouldn‘t be so funny but I burst out laughing when I saw the picture. This is certainly a creative way to say something that would get you flamed on 小红书💀

The question in the post: Why doesn't everyone like the male lead of The Prisoner of Beauty?

    Answer in picture: Ugly

Well, xiaohongshu is definitely helping me improve my Chinese reading in unexpected ways 🫠

  27. Dear gawd I know Google Translate can be dire, but man this is the most dire I've seen yet lol!

    Original text:
    #刘学义终于切大号了##源仲终于切大号了# 《念无双》剧情的发展节奏还是很快速的呀,这次刘学义出演的源仲终于切大号了,有狐族大祭司源仲终于可以上线了! 热剧观察的微博视频

Anyway, the translation (according to Deep Seek) is:
#Liu Xueyi Finally Switches to His Main Account# #Yuan Zhong Finally Switches to His Main Account# The plot development of A Moment But Forever is really fast-paced! This time, Liu Xueyi's character Yuan Zhong has finally switched to his main account, and the high priest of the fox tribe, Yuan Zhong, is finally making his appearance! [Hot Drama Watch's Weibo video]

"切大号" (qiē dà hào) literally means "switch to main account" - a gaming/metaphorical term referring to a character revealing their true/powerful identity. Yup, if you've seen the episode this came from you'd get it. LOL

There's a lot of slang on Weibo, and relying on Google Translate could literally get you the opposite meaning of what the poster is trying to say.

  28. Back on Thursday I went to a few bookstores here in Valencia. One of them had a separate chess section, where I saw books by Miguel Illescas. I considered buying the book on endings, but after a bit of research I saw that the "Curso completo de ajedrez" basically contains all four paperbacks, and the ebook version was only 9.49€ :neofox_book:

Now I can work on my Spanish and on my chess at the same time, and I can use the Chessnut Go to play through the exercises against the engine :neofox_happy:
