#Judaism has a concept called Lashon Hara, which translates loosely as "Evil Speech". Something need not be untrue to be considered Lashon Hara and it is considered much worse than telling a lie; it is speech that, on its own, is considered enough to forfeit your portion of Olam Habah (the next life-ish).
It is speech that harms another person, does not genuinely attempt to improve a situation, and whose impact is difficult to rectify.
If I tell a teacher that you skipped class, omitting that it was because you were sick, this does harm you, but is easily fixed either by my including the information or by them calling your parent to find out, so this wouldn't qualify either.
If I am called as a job reference and tell an embarrassing story, this has (potentially) cost you a job, is not something that can be just taken back, and does nothing to help. This is Lashon Hara.
Trump is ba'al lashon hara.

@rockymcrockerson the ideas are good (and ostensibly the point of Judaism).
My mixed feelings come from a combination of #supercessionism and #misinformation.
For example, everybody should refrain from #LashonHara, #Jewish or not and we ought to be the example of what that looks like so others will recognize why. But if #Christians call something Lashon Hara and convince everybody that's what it really means, it undermines our example. Same with #Teshuvah.

@serge #LashonHara #Rechilut #gossip #tochecha
Necessary speech is not #LashonHara. "Necessary" has to do with public safety. If I know for a fact that a grocer keeps the meat in the cooler nice and pink through the use of formaldehyde, it isn't #LashonHara to report it to the authorities, or to warn another shopper. In fact, I am required to warn.
If, however, I think his grocery is not as nice as others, it is #LashonHara for me to warn others away from it.

@serge #LashonHara includes repeating or listening to unnecessary talk about others, whether true or untrue. #Rechilut is specifically #gossip.
Strictly speaking, one should offer a #tochecha (rebuke) to a wrongdoer before taking it to the authorities.

A question that's been asked is should Babka have a no #LashonHara policy. My understanding of what qualifies as lashon hara is low, and I know we have several #rabbi 's who could provide more insight, but I believe that lashon hara includes true facts as well as untrue rumors, and so I worry about how such a rule may be applied.
Is it lashon hara to file a report against someone due to their behavior on the platform?
