  6. An actor is a "thing" such as "a mouse" and an action is "what it's doing." An example would be "sleeping." A lot of times, when someone's saying something, there's an actor as well as an action contained in it. That knowledge isn't particularly useful for speaking a language though. I'm not sure why they place so much importance on it. #world #language_learning #duolingo #learning_french

  7. Dear diary, I was just reading the tips section for French Basics 1 on Duolingo, and I think these are the most crucial elements of what Duolingo is trying to teach: 1) Actors 2) Actions 3) Sound variations and 4) Pronouncing sounds consistently. I'm starting my thousand day streak today apparently. I'll keep you posted. #world #language_learning #duolingo #learning_french

  8. CW: Repost - Organizing the Syllables of Sentences

    *Reposting this with the hashtag

Dear diary, I found a way to pronounce French sentences a little better. It's easiest just to show you.

    An example French sentence:

"Je regarde un film plus tard."

    How do you pronounce that?

    Well...

My iPhone has an app—Translate—that can pronounce French sentences fairly well (in a computer voice, you know), and if you plug that sentence into there, it sounds roughly like this:

    "jju-RE-gahh-DANN-film-PLU-tah"

Anyway, I make my own spelling for the sentence, and it's easier for me to say. Otherwise I trip over my own words and I'm not able to say it.

I felt sad because my friend said that this wasn't a good way of learning a language. I thought it was pretty good, because my pronunciation improved by around 60% from using this method, and I came up with it. It made me feel more capable of learning the language.

    Reply:

Frankie! This is the Duolingo owl, "Duo."

It reminds you when you don't honor your commitments, and if you don't do it for long enough, it sends you a "Looks like these notifications aren't working anymore. We'll stop sending them now" notification.

When I get those notifications, I feel horrible about myself.
