  1. Happy 25th Birthday, KNOPPIX!

KNOPPIX is a live Linux distribution based on Debian that is designed to be run from either the USB flash drive or the CD-ROM. It was one of the first popular live Linux distributions that was made by a German Linux consultant, Klaus Knopper. Currently, KNOPPIX contains open-source software that are bundled with the live distribution, along with some of the proprietary software.

The latest version available for general download is KNOPPIX 9.1, which was released on January 25th, 2021. Since then, 9.2 and 9.3 were released exclusively to the subscribers of Linux Magazin German as a physical DVD in April 2021 and June 2022 under DELUG-DVD.

The very first version of KNOPPIX was released as version 1.4 on September 30th, 2000, which marks the start of the project. Since then, various versions, including the remarkable 7.2.0 released June 24th, 2013, were made.

So, we are celebrating the 25th birthday of KNOPPIX!

The latest version that is available for public download is 9.1, which was released to bring improvements and new features, compared to the previous versions. It also includes Chromium for web browsing, as well as all the other software that was bundled in previous Knoppix versions. It uses the LXDE desktop environment, which is suitable for lightweight system usage to make it suitable for old PCs.

If we managed to get our hands on the very first version of KNOPPIX, we’ll make a review article on it as soon as we get it working. We are open for any links that point to KNOPPIX 1.4. The file names were knoppix-1.4-30-9-2000-DE.iso and knoppix-1.4-30-9-2000-ALS.iso.

Tell us your experience of KNOPPIX in the comments section; we can’t wait to hear them from you!
