  1. Plant-lovers, avert your eyes.
I'm no horticultural expert, but I'm pretty sure the "after" isn't supposed to look like this.

To make matters more frustrating, multiple workers are getting multiple days' pay to go around the neighbourhood inflicting this sort of damage (with a hefty side of noise pollution), while the young trees that listed to 45° in a storm a few months back have neither been righted nor removed and replaced.

To add insult to injury, the taxpayer is paying to have this done.

  2. "Private developers build for profit, public housing providers are building for longevity so they need high quality, durable housing that's built to last.

If we build too cheaply we pay for it down the line."

  3. I remember as a child asking my dad why there were state houses in Remuera.
My dad told me it was a deliberate choice to build dwellings in different areas by the govt as they did not want to create slums also many service workers worked in the areas they lived.

I can only assume this #NZPol coalition of cants have abandoned any pretense of NZ being an egalitarian society. #KāingaOra

  4. Port Chalmers is just over the hill from me. Kainga Ora demolished 5 older state homes in Albertson Ave to build 9 new homes.

Following Bill English's dodgy review of the agency, the Nats stuck former Telecom CEO Simon Moutter in charge and surprise... no new houses. The plug has been pulled.

Dunedin desperately needs more social housing, but the Nats demand yet more wealth transfer for the super-wealthy.

May this cooker coalition collapse soon.

This is incredibly disappointing. One thing that impressed me about working at Kāinga Ora was how it attempted to embrace Te ao Māori in all aspects of its work and within the organisation. Never easy of course but the intent was there and it made it a better place to work at - and a better landlord too. It's no surprise that this government continues on its destructive and reactionary path that activily hurts and disadvantages Māori.

A quick hatchet job, ordered & accepted via text. It's third world stuff from National.

  7. I should have included this video from Te Ariki Pihama, Chief Advisor Māori at Kāinga Ora on how to correctly pronounce its name. It's not that hard!

  8. This excellent from Kieran McAnulty. He really does nail how the government is undermining Kāinga Ora. Great speech.

  9. The problem with Kāinga Ora is that successive governments haven't given them the resources they need to do the job required of them. I know of many KO tenants who need wrap-around support, including mental health or social work. Instead they're dealing with a new person every time they hear from KO, most of whom are not even aware of their specific needs, let alone sensitive to them.

Will the NatACTs fix this? I doubt it.

  10. "... previously the pre-construction phase would take, on average, close to 18 months, the consenting process would take another seven months and then finally another eight months for construction.

Under the new system, the homes so-far built have taken about a month in the pre-construction phase, up to a month ... for consent, and then about a four-month build time.

That's a timeframe difference of just over two years. "
